Think this one is useful. But not sure; where to put it, and how to put it there.

I'm afraid you're going to have to repost that without whatever code you were trying to use, because I can't really understand what you meant.

I'm not the original poster, but I think Unknown Troper meant to say:

There is an old joke about the Swiss breaking out in inappropriate laughter in church. As the joke explains "That's when they understand the jokes they heard at Saturday's party". Stories with a lot of Parental Bonus or other sorts of in-jokes are often not appreciated for YEARS. Sometimes it takes learning about the event or persons parodied, or maybe re-watching with your own kids.

This trope was named by Biologist/essayist Stephen Jay Gould, in an essay "The True Embodiment of Everything That's Excellent" about inside jokes in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Which he would never---well hardly ever---miss a chance to reference in his 'popular science' essays.

Colin: This happens fairly often to me when I watch MST3K; mostly because I started watching it when I was 14 or so. I actually have started laughing in class because our lesson basically explained one of their jokes.

Also, Family Guy has quite a few of these kind of obscure jokes, including one about an English Prime Minister from the 17th or 18th century (can't remember who), followed by a cut to the guy saying "You don't even know who i am?" It seems to me that the writers say something like "It may be obscure, but it is still damn funny." when they write those jokes.

Ironically, I did know who Benjamin Disraeli was.
