Some works of fiction, regardless of length, take place over a single day. That's not to say a lot of things can't happen during that day, though: the protagonist could discover secret powers, find true love, fight off an evil bad guy who threatens to destroy everything he holds dear, and still have time to tuck himself in bed at the end.

This was a strict convention in western Opera for a while, often loathed for its constraints and unreasonable results.
