Senseless Sacrifice

Name Space:
Page Type:
Downer counterpart to a Heroic Sacrifice. Usually happens to anyone who isn't The Hero or The Messiah while attempting a Heroic Sacrifice. May serve as fuel for Heroic Resolve and/or an Unstoppable Rage. Might trigger What a Senseless Waste of Human Life. Typically, the Red Shirt Army charging like boars will have this happen.

If you really want to mess with the hero and audience, the villain reveals that his Self-Destructive Charge was merely tilting at windmills, it was just a diversionary tactic designed to exploit his martyr complex.

In the last two Animorphs books, this happens to Rachel: since Erek drained the Pool ship's weapons, the Blade ship got away. She might as well have gotten on at all, and then she and Tom would have lived.

Hilda in the webcomic Fans, captured by an enemy order, telekinetically prevents her automaton double from shooting Rikk by making it shoot itself instead. Her captor informs her that this was his plan all along, in order to demoralize her organization.

Happens all the time in Dragon Ball: Mutenroshi against Piccolo Daimaoh, Chaozu and Tenshinhan against Nappa, Goku himself against Cell, and Vegeta against Buu. Of course, it's Dragonball, so they all get better, but still.
