Big, Creaky Door

A big, creaky door

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
You know, that thing where the protagonist walks up to an abandoned house and they knock/push on the door, and the door slowly swings open and reveals a bare interior. Oh-and it creaks, too. Often seen in mystery series, i.e Scooby-Doo, etc.

Right, it shows the building is old and abandoned ('cause nobody oils the hinges), it's a huge warning to whoever/whatever is inside that someone's coming, and the sound itself is disconcerting. Seen It A Million Times

One is heard at the beginning of "Monster Mash" (after which the trope is named).

A common trope for horror/suspense radio shows, one of which was even called The Creaking Door.

I think there was another, more famous, American radio show that always opened with a big creaky door too, but don't know any more than that.

    • This happens in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken when Luther Heggs tries to get into the haunted house. He tries the door but, but it's locked. Then the door swings open on its own with an ominous creaking, and slams shut again when he tries to go through it.
    • Fright Night. When Charlie Brewster and Peter Vincent approach the vampire's house, Peter suggests going around the back and sneaking it. Then the front door swings open by itself while loudly creaking, making it clear that the vampire knows they're coming. After they get inside the door loudly slams shut behind them.

I don't think it's a good idea to have the laconic and title nearly identical. o.o

^ The book, the movie, or both? (I've seen the movie but I forget whether the door was creaky or not; I recall it was actually pretty small, just actually small enough for Coraline herself to crawl through.)

    • In Carpe Jugulum, one of the ways the modernist vampyres outrage their traditionalist Igor is by insisting he oil all the hinges, when he'd just got them sounding right.

There's a kid's movie I can't remember the name of (but am mentioning in case somebody else remembers it) about a group of children who start out making a Super 8 vampire movie and wind up catching criminals of some variety. There's a scene where they're exploring an old house and the kid in charge of the movie says it would be great to film part of the movie in there, but he's sad they don't have sound gear because the creaking door is perfect.
