Since Empire, I don't think anyone's ever tried to play Strikes Back straight.

Don't forget "Mewtwo Strikes Back!" It's Exactly What It Says On The Tin.

Schlock horror seems to be ripe with these:
    • A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
    • Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers
    • Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
      • (even worse, Halloween H20 was originally going to be Halloween 7: The Revenge of Laurie Strode)
    • Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman
    • The Return of the Living Dead (an unofficial sequel to Night of the Living Dead) and it's FOUR sequels
    • Jaws: The Revenge
    • The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre

    Not horror:
    • Battle Royale 2: Revenge
    • Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen (the sequel to the Bay film, not yet released)
    • Revenge of the Pink Panther
    • The Return of the Pink Panther
    • The Pink Panther Strikes Again
    • Porky's Revenge

    And some video games:
    • Burnout Revenge
    • Batman: Vengeance
    • Double Dragon II: Revenge

"Since Empire, I don't think anyone's ever tried to play Strikes Back straight."

Actually there's C. J. Cherryh's novel The Kif Strike Back, although one suspects that wasn't her original title but was imposed by her editor.

Bump. Link to the quoted parody of this in the 'Avatar TV' video: [1]

Can't believe I forgot Superman Returns, Batman Returns, and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Though there ought to be a parody named Diminishing Returns, somehow.

Mewtwo Strikes Back is an odd example, since it's the subtitle of Pokemon: The First Movie. The sequel is called Mewtwo Returns.

    Don't forget Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.

    Necro-bump, Up For Grabs.

If you say Yuri's Revenge, you must also say Kane's Wrath.

And I'd like to remind everyone that YR is an add-on to the existing Red Alert 2, which had no second subtitle.

It's worth noting that Return of the King is not an example of this trope because: 1) it's not a trilogy but the third volume of a single story, 2) the titular return is something that's been hundreds (?) of years in the making, and not a direct follow-up to the two previous installments.

Black Adder (specifically, Blackadder III) parodies this with Dictionary 2: Return of the Killer Dictionary.

On a LOTR note, Return of the Shadow was a rejected title for The Fellowship of the Ring.

Music example: The O.C. Supertones' second studio album was titled Supertones Strike Back, and their sixth was titled Revenge of the O.C. Supertones.

Is it okay if I pimp my own contributor page? Meta3: The Revenge of the Curse of the Son of Meta's Revenge Rides Again: This Time, It's Personal.

    Unknown Troper
And les we forget Halloween Town 2: Kalibar's Revenge?

We should turn this into Stock Sequel Subtitles. The "Revolution" trope would go good here, too.
