Maligned Font

In-universe complaint about a specific type of font.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope

Up for Grabs, Needs a Better Description, Needs a Better Title

Fonts are Serious Business. A injudicious use of Comic Sans, Wing Dings, etc, can be a character's Beserk Button , become part of an Author Fillibuster or be played for laughs as an uptight character dismisses say, a resume, purely due to the font.

I always thought this is That Wacky Comic Sans discredited. Because a long long time ago there used to be a time when Comic Sans Serif wasn't universally hated... right?

And there's even a whole site dedicated to hating this font: Ban Comic Sans.

In an episode of Escapist News Network, the cast has a competition to see who can design the worst THQ logo. Three of them do so by arranging the letters in awful designs, the last simply writes them in Comic Sans.

... What? That page doesn't exist? I might have to make it...

In this recap of Smallville web-sters Chris Sims and David Uzumeri briefly bemoan the use of Comic Sans in an "old" comic book (the In Universe equivalent of Action Comics #1 + Fawcett's Flash Comics #1).
Chris: Nobody has read this comic, ever. And if nobody's ever read it, how do they even know it's real? Was there any kind of authentication process? I mean, not to get too nerdy about the process of valuing back issues, but it'd be the same thing if they'd based an episode about a lost Da Vinci painting or something. How do you know what it is if no one has ever seen it?
David: The fact that it uses Comic Sans really gives credence to the idea that Zatara just printed up a crappy fan comic and then cast a spell on it.

There's an xkcd comic that takes this approach to Papyrus, I think.

How is this even a trope? What about it is trope-worthy, and does this site really want an article about it? Instances of it are Too Rare To Trope, and being popularity-related, is obvious natter and edit war bait.

^It's obviously not Too Rare To Trope, we already have a solid example list.

If it were about hating on Comic Sans, you'd be right that it's Not A Trope. However, the OP has made it clear that this is about characters in media commenting on their dislike of Comic Sans. It has zip to do with popularity.

It could qualify as a meme?

Can this be expanded to cover tropes related to how people use typefaces?

As far as that goes, there was also a Manly Guys Doing Manly Things comic where the Prince gets rejected by Commander Badass for writing his resume in Papyrus.

^I think that's a fine idea. No reason it should be limited to just one fount people hate.

I agree with expanding the trope to include any font lampshaded as bad. Limiting it to Comic Sans makes it too narrow, which is why I called it Too Rare To Trope. Maybe I should've said "too specific" instead. I also think it Needs A Better Title. Any title that contains "Everyone Hates" just sounds like a Take That to me.

    ^I agree with everything there.

I've renamed this and added a laconic that incorporates some of the idea expresed here. Given that we haven't heard from Iron Lion in forever, I'm slapping an Up For Grabs on it. Anyone want to make a real trope out of this?

I don;t think Cracked counts as in-universe. You probably need to reword the laconic.

You probably need to read the entire thread before responding.

Anyway, if no one takes this this on in a few days, it is going to go into the discard bin.

I read the top but can we have a "real life" section-- such as the reason sans serif fonts are less popular than their... having serif counterparts (basically it is harder for the human eye to read a font without serifs)

@Madcapunlimited: The hate is actually about specific poorly designed fonts, not a Serif vs. Sans Serif thing. Each have their place. Serif fonts are ideal for the printed page for the reason you mention. Sans Serif fonts are ideal for documents that will be displayed on a computer screen because they're clearer and blur less on the lower resolution.

@Azkar- I guess agree to disagree, but what if I find you a librarian who hates it when books are printed in Sans Serif (the one from my high school who first brought this up to me is almost certainly dead)? :-)

@Madcapunlimited: Like I said, Serif is ideal for the printed page .. so your librarian would be correct to hate on books printed in Sans Serif. ;)

I'm certain that The IT Crowd has made this joke but I couldn't name you an episode.

Three days must pass before this YKTTW is Launchworthy or Discardable
