Spy Tux Reveal

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Most commonly seen in James Bond films, this is where a spy is dressed in appropriate gear for, e.g. parachuting, scuba-ing or jetpacking, which they are doing to infiltrate a party. Once on the ground, they unzip their clothes to reveal an immaculate tuxedo underneath.

Let's see... it got used in True Lies along with several other classic spy-tropes.

xXx used it satirically in the beginning, when the 'old school' spy pulled that trick only to find himself walking into a RAVE-party, where he stands out like a sore thumb and quickly gets captured - thus demonstrating the need for 'a new kind of agent'.

Used in the second National Treasure, to get into the President's birthday party (after sneaking in through the river).

It's also in the first National Treasure, after dressing up like a janitor to sneak into the gala.

Dang, I think I saw this inverted recently, but I can't remember where. The spy takes off the tux to reveal a wetsuit or Spy Catsuit underneath. It seemed like a specific Shout Out to this trope, too.

I like Spy Tux Reveal, because it is clear what it means - but there's other, non-tux variations of this. The movie Men At Work has the two leads strip off their sanitation worker coveralls to reveal their surfing outfits for a little recreation in a similar manner to this idea.

^^^ @suedenim: I just happened to be doing research on another YKTTW and found this in Parody Failure:

    • Eiga Sentai Scanranger had an episode where the characters spoof various superspies...It also doesn't help that the writer's idea of parodying these movies was having his poor man's Bond take off his tuxedo to reveal a wetsuit underneath instead of the other way around...

Might stick with the name... unless someone comes up with something more pithy.

@suedenim: It's in an episode of Family Guy where Peter, Cleveland, Quagmire, and joe try to steal a bunch of money from Mr. Pewterschmidt. It's in Season 6 I think.

Three days must pass before this YKTTW is Launchworthy or Discardable
