So Bad It's Even More Horrible

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Something is So Bad, It's Horrible, and is shunned by only the most dedicated of a minority.

And then they make a sequel. And it's just as bad, if not worse.

Baby Geniuses 2 comes to mind, but it's rare for god awful movies to get sequels.

I think this can be lumped with Sequelitis.

Date Movie ranked #2 at the box office the week it opened. Apparently nobody watched it and realized how bad it was, because Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans, the follow-ups produced by the same people, ranked first in their opening weeks.

That recent Meet The Spartans movie comes to mind. Somehow, the creators of godawful Narrow Parody Epic Movie managed to do the unthinkable--make a worse sequel.

Well...Basic Instinct wasn't exactly The Godfather, but it did well enough with hoi polloi.

Species 3--since I've never heard anyone mention its existence besides Wikipedia, I'm assuming it's just as awful as the second one.

I think Species 3 is a video-only sequel to a movie. Those are actually pretty common since of course a video doesn't need as big an audience to make money.

I just remembered a rather funny meta-meta example... "Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles". The plot of the movie actually concerns a series of god-awful movies, that keeps getting sequels despite being widely panned by critics and having few fans. While working there as an extra, and later animal-handler, Dundee discovers that it's because the movie-production is actually a cover for a smuggling-opperation!

...which, of course, makes you wonder what they're smuggling out of Australia, huh?

This doesn't exactly apply to videogames, of the "meh" or "so-so" games that get sequels, many are infinatly better then the original

Buldersgate 2, Daggerfall, and Mask of the Betrayer all come to mind

Rayman would be another example of an OK game with a very good sequel (and, depending on who you ask, some good sequels).

Well, there was a Bloodrayne 2 movie (directed by Uwe Boll) and a sequel to the movie of House of the Dead (directed by some other guy). I also think there was a straight-to-DVD sequel of Behind Enemy Lines, where the only thing really similar to the Owen Wilson flick was the title and the American trapped "behind enemy lines" in North Korea.

I guess it would depend if we're talking actual sequel with the same people or if the name is just being used.

Pirates Of The Carribean didn't *start out* bad, though. That's how the OP defined this trope- otherwise it's run-of-the-mill Sequelitis. I'm not actually sure this is splittable, really. (Although that's a *great* title. XD)

    The Hills Have Eyes 2.

I can't believe it took this long for someone to say "Take It To The Forums".

Seriously. We've got So Bad Its Horrible; we don't need this...

This isn't So Bad Its Horrible though, this trope refers to the bizarre phenomena of So Bad Its Horrible inexplicably getting equals.

Another example would be Troll 2 and 3 (an especially bizarre case, considering that neither involved trolls, and so it would have been easy to distance them from the first movie and each other.)

I can't believe how many people don't seem to actually be reading the description.

Sadly, it could easily degenerate into Complaining About Shows You Dont Like, but it's its own thing... unfortunately, I can't think of any examples right now.

But all the examples are, by definition, So Bad Its Horrible. Therefore, the trope becomes "So Bad Its Horrible, but with an extra restriction". If you need a place to whine about these things, just put them in So Bad Its Horrible.

    • Archie Bunker's change of heart late in All in the Family made he show so bad that it was horrible. Someone decided to spit on the once great corpse and make a spinoff, Archie Bunker's Place. It was far worse.
    • Highland 2: The Quickening was a nonsensical, incredibly boring, B movie. It was nothing like the great, original movie or excellent television series. Many fans apparently consider Highlander 3: The Sorceror even worse! This troper has absolutely no intention of watching the movie but it should fit this trope.
    • M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense was a terrible movie with no plot, action, better than horrendous dialogue or anything else beyond pointless meandering. Its only virtue was a clever twist. He should not have been allowed to make any other movies yet created Signs, Unbreakable, Lady in the Water The Happening and The Village. None featured anything besides meandering. His The Village was sommehow worse worse than The Sixth Sense! Shyamalan fits this trope perfectly.

Hey, one more for my tally mark of completely subjective tropes.

Subjective tropes aren't bad, but some of these are simply only a matter of poster opinion. I mean, come on, Pirates of the Caribbean? The Sixth Sense?!?

I sense a lot of debate over this one.

This is So Bad Its Horrible, Only More So imo. Is there really enough difference between Sequelitis or So Bad Its Horrible?

    WillyFourEyes
I vote "nay" on launching this one. Bad sequels to So Bad Its Horrible works are still So Bad Its Horrible. That trope doesn't need an extra qualifier.

There might be something to salvage around the idea of Inexplicable Sequel. Focusing on the idea that a sequel can somehow get made for anything, no matter how much the original failed creatively or commercially.

    UnknownTroper
Yeah, let's just put this as a thing of movies that are critical and/or financial failures, yet have sequels.

I've read a quote at bash.org that pretty much gives an example itself:

    "I can't believe they made Hackers 3".
    B:"They made Hackers 2?" C:"What's Hackers?"

    I haven't seen hackers 2 or 3.

I liked So Bad It Gets Worse, but I think Inexplicable Sequel fits the point and can keep the article on track. Plus, I think there are plenty of So Bad Its Horrible examples by definition, so splitting the sequels off and trying to get some understanding of why these things get sequels could be useful. There's a whole different vibe going between getting the first thing up, and getting the sequel up.

Hobgoblins is getting a sequel, although in this case, it's because Rick Sloane saw how popular the Hobgoblins episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 was, and is now trying to deliberately make a film even worse than the original!

    Inexplicable Sequel works, too.

Yeah, this pretty much has to be Inexplicable Sequel. Otherwise, it's just another Only More So that we really don't need.
