Planet Terra

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
This is a fairly simple Trope. It is simply the habit of calling Earth "terra" in Sci-Fi. The word is adopted from the latin word for, well, earth. The advantages to doing this are simply coolness, especially when describing a human from earth. Terran just sounds more exotic then "Earthling".

Anime and Manga

  • In Trinity Blood, Methuselahs refer to humans as Terrans.

Film
  • In The Book Of The Film for Men In Black, humans are called "terries." (At least by Edgar the bug, so it's likely a derogatory derivative of "terran.")

Literature

  • The government in Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein is the Terran Federation.
  • The titular organization in the Terran Trade Authority series by Stewart Cowley.
  • The Saga of the Seven Suns series has the Terran Hanseatic League.
  • Andre Norton's science fiction stories
  • E.E. "Doc" Smith's stories referred to our planet as both Earth and Terra.
  • Poul Anderson's Dominic Flandry stories refer to Terra and the Terran Empire.

Live-Action TV

  • The Star Trek Mirror Universe has the Terran Empire (until it collapses, at least). The main universe occasionally also refers to our solar system as the Terran System (though it's more frequently known as the Sol system or Sector 001).
  • Blake's Seven has a Terran Federation.

Tabletop Games

  • The Battle Tech universe has the Terran Hegemony.
  • Renegade Legion has an imperial government known as the Terran Overlord Government.
  • Holy Terra is the homeworld of the Imperium of Man in the Warhammer 40000 universe.
  • The Starfire universe has the Terran Federation.
  • The Terran Confederation in Traveller

Video Games

  • The Galactic Terran Aliance from Free Space.
  • In Starcraft, humans are called Terrans.
  • Wing Commander has the Terran Confederation.
  • In the Unrealverse, the Skaarj call humans Terrans.
  • Planet Side has the Terran Republic.
  • Humans from the Sol system in the X games are referred to as Terrans, especially in X3: Terran Conflict.
  • The main race in the sequel to Galactic Civilizations is the Terran Alliance.

Unsorted

  • The Battle Opera Gunmech universe has the Terran Alliance.
  • The Starfire universe has the Terran Federation.

Is this already a trope? If not it should be.

The closest I could find was Numbered Homeworld. I think this is a valid trope, kind of how sometimes the moon is called Luna and the sun Sol or Solar etc.

The Other Wiki has a list here. These could probably use some expansion by people who are actually familiar with the works in question...

The Terran Confederation(and of course the planet Terra) in Traveller. Terrans are alternatively called Solimani meaning men of Sol(the name for the sun)

It's not that Terra and Terrans sounds better, but the intent is to make it sound more exotic. It's an important distinction because the former is subjective.

Robert Holmes stories in Doctor Who sometimes have aliens refer to humans as "Tellurians", which is a genuine if rare variation of "Terrans".

The basiline humans are referred as "Terrans" in Exosquad to distinguish them from Neosapiens and get around the small fact that both races are human.

Conquest Frontier Wars: Terrans = humans, although the planet is still referred to as earth.

Starfire is a Tabletop Game and its example should go under that heading.
