Shell Shock Silence (UP FOR GRABS)

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
A big explosion goes off, then we can't hear anything but a high pitched hum. Gradually fade in small arms fire, yelling, screaming, etc.

We've GOTTA already have this. Right? I searched everywhere but no luck.

Examples:
  • Saving Private Ryan, at least 3 or 4 times.
  • The trailer for Halo 3 where Master Chief gets his helmet blown off.
  • LOST 6x01 (after a nuke maybe goes off).

Mentioned in Cordelia's Honor. Aral and Cordelia both recall the violent death of a parent, and Aral describes this phenomenon after witnessing his mother's murder.

I think this is a new one. I searched ALL the sound tropes, nothing.

    Up for Grabs.

    • Half Life 2 has this also, when a grenade goes off too close to you.

I think Saving Private Ryan might even be the Ur Example, and is definitely the Trope Codifier. Anything predate it?

I know my literature example predates it.

Sometimes includes the action being slowed down, either to show off what's going on or to reflect the mindset of the main character. Sometimes the humming will be a ringing noise, like the onset of tintinitus.

    • The movie version of Master and Commander: Far Side of the World has this during the first attack of the phantom ship.
    • Children of Men has this occuring to the main character during a terrorist bombing.
    • Saints Row 2 has this, along with a very annoying ringing noise whenever someone sets off an explosion right next to the player's character.

Occasionally during this moment the edges of the screen will be greyed out, to simulate someone starting to lose conciousness or returning from unconciousness.

    • The first Hellboy movie has this happen to Meyers right after Liz Sherman goes Person Of Mass Destruction in Rasputin's clockwork funhouse.
