New Villain for the Spinoff

A spinoff to a main series has a new villain.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Congratulations! Your series has done so well it can afford a spinoff or side story. But using the main villain won't do; maybe this story takes place in another land or time period, or the main villain jsut wouldn't fit the story you're trying to tell.

The solution is to make a new villain who will likely only be seen for the spinoff and never seen again afterward. Commonly a Video Game trope.

    • Bowser is dethroned in pretty much every RPG. In Super Stars he is trashed and latter posessed by Cackletta, and he spends most of Partners in Time wandering around with amnesia while the alien Shroobs steal the show
    • While all the console Legend Of Zelda games are Hijacked By Ganon, the spin off games on the gameboy invariable feature a different villain, sometimes the Wind Sorcerer Vaati, but just as often somebody new.

Misuse. Hijacked is when he's not the apparent villain at first, and the first game, Ocarina, and Wind Waker make it clear that he's the big bad from early on. Also, Zelda II didn't actually make him the villain.

BTW, this would be a Sister Trope to Filler Villain.

Twilight Princess and I think Four Swords Adventures are the only ones that use Hijacked By Ganon.

I'm not quite sure if this is a trope. Spin offs typically feature a new batch of characters anyway, so having a new villain isn't that notable.

^Was just about to type exactly this. If the original series is still running, then the main characters from that series should be dealing with their villain already. If the original series has finished, then presumably their villain is dead. Except in some cases.

Yeah but as the Hijacked By Ganon trope shows there's usually a strong reaction among the fans about new villians.
