The Elephant Graveyard

A character is forbidden to go to a certain place, and they do just that

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
A variation of Forbidden Fruit - a character will be told not to go to a certain place, but curiousity gets the best of them. Often, the forbidden location hides a terrible secret that the hero will then stumble upon, but regardless, it is always off-limits for a good reason.

I suggest calling it "The Forbidden Zone."

Common in fairy tales. Someone (evil stepmother, wicked witch, Bluebeard, cruel landowner, etc) tells a young woman (servant, stepchild, foundling, wife, etc) they're never allowed to leave the house, but they're free to go anywhere in the house except This One Room. The woman inevitably goes into that room while the other person is out of the house. Depending on the version of the fairy tale, this either leads to the heroine's doom, or her triumph over her "captor".

Definitely a bad trope name - we do have Elephants' Graveyard already and it is exactly what the name suggests (grr... how to link a trope with an apostrophe in the title?)

    now as for a name...

I like forbidden zone, but is there a better title?

Hmmm. Could Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone be the trope namer?

    Or maybe not.

"Fools Rush In", perhaps? As in "For fools rush in where angels fear to tread"?

We already have Forbidden Zone too. It's about areas with foreboding names that nobody ever goes to because they're considered too dangerous.

Since this trope is about a forbidden place that the character promptly visits:

Going To The Forbidden Zone ?

In Harry Potter they also have the Forbidden Forest, which might make a good name, but the word "Forbidden is starting to lose all meaning in my brain because of the repetition.

Dangerous Trespassing? That's not very catchy or fun though.

I'm not really seeing the difference between this and Forbidden Zone. Can anyone explain it?

I'm not seeing any difference between this and Forbidden Zone myself. I'm betting that whoever started this YKTTW didn't know it existed.

The only difference I see is one would never have a Lawful person enter it while the other seems only to be entered by Too Dumb To Live.

The Simpsons: While on a playdate, Bart talks Ralph Wiggum into sneaking into his father's closet. Later:
Chief Wiggum: You know you're not supposed to go in there. What is your fascination with my Forbidden Closet of Mystery?

This seems to be a cross between the forbidden zone and forbidden fruit tropes. The only way I see of making it a trope in itself is to name it something like "never go there" and have it describe the situation where the warning is given, but the audience knows it will ultimately be ignored.

References to the forbidden zone and forbidden fruit are also needed.
