Obscure Urine Color

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Sometimes, there will be times in which a character's urine is a different color. Sometimes it will be a different color just because of something that happened to them, and other times it will be a different color for unexplained reasons (most of the time in Western Animation it will be a weird color for unexplained reasons).

Examples:

Film
  • In Role Models, the main characters' urine turns green due to them drinking the energy drinks they were promoting.
  • In The Madness Of King George, his urine is blue due to an actual symptom of George III's Porphyria.
  • Grown Ups has Kevin James peeing in the pool which is treated to make pee turn blue.

Live Action TV
  • In an episode of House, a woman comes to House telling him that she's dying. She has a seizure and urinates on herself, but the urine is green.

Stand-up
  • Dylan Moran had a stand-up routine where he said he knew someone who touched a Wiggle and his urine turned blue.

Western Animation
  • In an episode of The Angry Beavers, Norbert and Dagget had to take care of a baby mongoose. In one scene, the mongoose urinates on Norbert's face...but the stream is green.
  • In an episode of Danny Phantom, Dash soaks Danny with a water gun, and then tells him that the liquid wasn't water...but the liquid is blue.

Real Life
  • Methylene blue can turn urine blue when ingested. This is also used on an episode of MASH.
  • Certain conditions (Porphyria as above) or diets can cause urine to be different colors.

(help me out with more examples, please.)

House: a woman comes to House saying she's dying. She then goes into a seizure, urinating on herself (as is common with seizure patients) - but it's green. "That's interesting."

One symptom of The Madness of King George was blue urine. This was an actual symptom of George III's particular brand of dementia.

Numerous commercials for incontinence products, where the adult diapers or pads are shown with a liquid soaking into the item, but it isn't yellow liquid, it is usually blue or green.

Does it mean that every sample shown in tv adverts was from person with certain brand of dementia or other health issues? ;)

    • In a stand up routine by Dylan Moran , he says he once knew someone who touched a Wiggle and his urine turned blue, he got third degree burns and now he can't eat dairy.

Methylene blue, when ingested, will turn a person's urine blue, and has often been used as a prank.
    • In the MASH episode "Sons and Bowlers," Major Winchester slips some methylene blue to a rival camp's bowling champion; when the guy panics about his blue urine, Winchester advises him to refrain from all exercise--including bowling, which allows the 4077th to win the contest.

Trope may need clarification. Is this trope describing when urine is oddly colored for censorship purposes, such as on kid shows, where using yellow liquid for urine would be too icky, or instances where the urine is oddly colored for plot related reasons, such as on medical shows where the urine color is the sign of a disease?

    • On Scrubs, JD and Turk accidentally left a man's urine sample out in the sun, causing it to turn blue, which they used to determine the man's illness.

Clarification on your George III example - the precise illness he had is now generally considered to be porphoryia (I think that's how you spell it).

    • In Skippys List, one pair of items is "I may not drink three bottles of green food coloring before a urine test," and "Nor may I drink three bottles of red food coloring and scream during the same."

Ooh, just noticed that the last comment before DAN's was in 2011. Definitely Up For Grabs.
