To show that a long period of time has passed, a cutaway occurs to show that the character has grown a beard. This can be Played for Drama as well as being Played for Laughs. A humorous example may show a character growing a beard after a (possibly very short) period of time, only to rip it off in the following scene. This trope is often Always Male, but is occasionally used with women as well, using longer hair as a substitute for the growth of a beard. [examples needed, help with description would also be appreciated]
