This is now a discredited trope.

^ Agreed, though you can still see it sometimes.

FWIW, I have a 40s-era sexual education book at home, and there lesbianism is seen as the result of this, and usually a seduction from an older and more experienced woman. So it used to be more "mainstream" than it is now.

I also note a distinct lack of examples in the original write-up.

IIRC The Simpsons had one episode attributing Smithers being gay to something, I forget what it was.

Yeah, mention the scientific evidence for homosexuality being genetic, hence this not being Truth In Television.

    ^"The Blunder Years:"
Mr Burns: I told [Smithers] that his father was murdered by a tribe of savage women. (to Smithers) I hope that didn't affect you in any way.
    Smithers: We'll never know, sir.

    • In The Simpsons Movie Ralph sees a naked Bart skate by on his skateboard, and announces "I like men now."
    • But Im A Cheerleader: one of the lessons involves finding the one incident in your life that turned you gay.

I saw a YKTTW about this before. It got a bunch of posts. Don't know if it was launched.

    EDIT: Here we go:

Despite being discreditied, this trope still appears. I'd have suggested But Im A Cheerleader myself, had I not been off the site for a few days dealing with a dampened keyboard.

Also Selma from The Simpsons said "There goes the last lingering thread of my heterosexuality" when she saw naked Homer run past her in season 2. She had her official coming out 11 seasons later.

    • It was implied on Seinfeld that Susan became a lesbian because of her experiences dating George. Perhaps unfortunately for her she reversed course and got back together with him.

^I think the same thing happened on [1] to one of Jim's exes. (Minus the reversed course).

Not a perfect example, but The Simpsons also had:
    • Homer's shirtless dancing in a gay bar has a butch lesbian announce "I didn't think it was possible, but seeing that makes me even more lesbian."

In Dragonriders Of Pern, if a bluerider or greenrider candidate isn't already gay when Impression occurs, he will be after his dragon first rises to mate.

I think Nine Chickweed Lane tried to do this. A Hand Wave was attempted to mean he was ALWAYS closeted, but in actuality, this happened.

Not quite a discredited trope; could be considered as a source for this.

Often used with a Straw Loser / Casanova Wannabe male character, turning women into lesbians after a single date / night with them.

Shortpacked spoofed this with a lesbian discussing her father taking her to a purity ball, and her friend wonders if that was what turned her gay, and the first girl says that was just from watching Princess Leia in Return Of The Jedi.
