Antagonism-Forged Friends

Friends who start out as enemies

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
Many friendships begin only after one or both parties hate each other for a period of time. If said friendship progresses into romance, it often leads to Belligerent Sexual Tension and Slap Slap Kiss moments.

Compare to Fire Forged Friends.

Examples:

Literature

Video Games
  • In the Sonic The Hedgehog video games, Knuckles starts out as a Hero Antagonist, but later becomes a friendly rival to Sonic and works with him and Tails on numerous occasions.

Western Animation
  • One episode of Rugrats describes how the main characters started out hating each other, thanks to rumors spread by Angelica.

I can't believe we don't already have this!

One episode of Friends tells us that Phoebe found Monica annoying when they first met, but was won over by her tenacity.

This seems like Defeat Means Friendship, except without the Defeat part: the antagonists just kinda stop disliking each other and become friends.

I'm sure there are many examples but Sara and Felicity from Road To Avonlea is the first to come to my mind.

    • The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr: Brisco & Lord Bowler start as rival bounty hunters, but eventually they bury the hatchet and become partners - even though Brisco is more popular (in universe) and Bowler becomes known as his "Faithful Companion."

Eric from Power Rangers Time Force, the captain of the silver guardians (and latter Quamtum Ranger always was antagonistic towards the rangers, even after he got a morpher for himself, it wasn't until he got over his own Inferiority Superiority Complex that he started to be more friendly to them, but unlike most Sixth Rangers he never fully joined them, they just happened to meet each other whenever a monster appeared

I really like this one and always meant to update it.

Road To Avonlea begins with rich girl Sara moving from Montreal to live with her deceased mother's relatives on Prince Edward Island. She immediately clashes with her snobby cousin Felicity. However they soon get over their mutual dislike and become best friends.

In The Baby Sitters Club, Kristy moves to her new stepfather's rich neighborhood. She and her new neighbor Shannon dislike each other and pull pranks on each other. However they eventually make peace and become friends. Shannon even joins the Babysitters Club as a part time member.

The first Mickey Rawlings historical baseball mystery has Mickey meet socialist journalist Karl Landfors and instantly dislike him. He not only finds him pretentious, he also views him as a romantic rival. However Mickey is forced to turn to Karl for help and Karl saves his life at the end. They're best friends for the rest of the series and Karl is the only character besides Mickey to appear in all six books.

    • Happens quite frequently in Runaways. Victor Mancha was once destined to kill Gert (along with every other superhero on Earth), but is now a senior member. Xavin was once Karolina's Abhorrent Admirer, but ultimately became her One True Love. The Young Avengers once tried to invade the Hostel, but soon became some of the Runaways' oldest allies... It helps that many of their conflicts are fuelled by misunderstandings.

    Is this Fire Forged Friends?

"Characters, hostile to each other, indifferent, or strangers, must fight on the same side. All the way up to an Enemy Mine situation. Afterwards, they are no longer hostile and perhaps even actual friends. If they continue as enemies, they are Friendly Enemy."

This looks like it's trying to be a Super Trope of the likes of Fire Forged Friends and Defeat Means Friendship by leaving the catalyst for the change unspecified. (Which would also mean it needs a better name, since it's not antagonism that forges the friendship.) The narrative significance is left a little too vague for my liking without that reason, though.

Nope, they're very different. Fire Forged Friends involves friendship growing by fighting on the same side togheter. This draft involves characters that start out hostile to one another, but that hostility later grows into a friendship. There can be overlap between both in some cases, but they are distinct.

Also, I'm very surprised this wasn't here already.

    • In the first Toy Story movie, Woody and Buzz start out as enemies, due to a combination of Woody thinking Buzz will replace him as Andy's favorite toy and Buzz thinking he is a real space ranger when in fact, he is a toy (something Woody constantly reminded him of throughout the film). As the film progressed, Buzz came to the realization that he was a toy and the two worked together to escape from Sid's house and reunite with Andy.

^^^^If they're so different, then why does the examples list here looks so much like an examples list from Fire Forged Friends?

This draft: Characters who initially dislike each other become friends.

Fire Forged Friends: Characters who initially dislike each other become friends because they went through an ordeal together.

^ this trope imply being in different sides. Fire Forged Friends often start out in the same side, or at least one of them is neither hero nor villain.

    But again, that's Friendly Enemy
  • July 31, 2014
    Elbruno
Not necessarilly. This draft does not imply that they remain enemies after the initial hostility.

Take Rugrats' example for instance: The babies start out seeing eachother as bad, but that later changes and they become the bestest of friends. To call them friendly enemies would be ridiculous.

Then isn't that Heel Face Turn?
  • July 31, 2014
    Elbruno
Nope, because none of them were a "heel" to begin with. They only started with the wrong foot.

The Harry Potter example also has a case were neither Friendly Enemy or Heel Face Turn cover it.
  • July 31, 2014
    MrL1193
^Said example also happens to provide the page image for Fire Forged Friends.

Seriously, the definition makes no sense if you deny that it would be a Super Trope. People do not simply wake up one day and say, "Oh hey, I feel like being friends with that guy I've always hated." There has to be some reason behind the change. Fire Forged Friends and Defeat Means Friendship come with a specific reason, while this trope idea leaves it unspecified. Now, mind you, that doesn't lay it open to the same objection as The Same But More Specific, but it just leaves me feeling like there's something missing when you remove the entire focus of the Subtropes you're basing it off of.

^ More like the two characters gradually becomes friendly to each other in this trope. So no specific event such as in FFF or DMF.

^^There are examples listed here that do have a specific catalyst. You're probably still thinking of Friendly Enemy.
  • August 1, 2014
    DAN004
^ But most of the catalysts are "stressful events happening to both of them" - which makes them Fire Forged Friends.

Dat Lyrical Nanoha example fits thusly.

The Fire Forged Friends description says: "Characters, hostile to each other, indifferent, or strangers, must fight on the same side. All the way up to an Enemy Mine situation. Afterwards, they are no longer hostile and perhaps even actual friends. If they continue as enemies, they are Friendly Enemy."

As a result, I didn't think they were the same thing though there is definitely overlap. I also have another example of this that isn't Fire Forged Friends.

In the first few books, Ramona Quimby fights with Howie a lot and dislikes having to hang around him because their mothers are friends. By the third book (Ramona the Brave), they are best friends and stay that way for most of the series (Howie isn't in the last book).

The change in their relationship is mostly between books but the end of Ramona the Pest seems to show the beginning of it when Ramona invites Howie to stay for lunch.
  • August 15, 2014
    DAN004
So I guess it needs mentioning that they gradually become friends over time, as opposed to being friends after a specific event.

    Name needs to change though.

    From Enemies To Friends?

Would Rocky and Apollo count or did they never really hate each other? Either way, they went from being boxing opponents to good friends.
  • August 16, 2014
    acrobox
So this is people who don't like each other start to like each other, for reasons excluding going through an ordeal together or challenged each other in a competition because those two are covered by subtropes.

Just make sure none of the examples are fireforged or defeat.

which means that Ron and Hermione doesnt count. Initially, Ron can't stand Hermione for being an Insufferable Genius, but after the troll incident, they become friends

    Troll incident means Fire Forged

I don't have time to read all of this discussion and all of Defeat Means Friendship, so I'm not sure how these examples fit in. Here are a couple of anime examples:

    • Dragonball Z: Goku and Vegeta started out as enemies. In fact, Vegeta was completely evil and wanted to destroy the Earth and all of humanity along with it. Later in the series, Vegeta grudgingly joins forces with the protagonists to help them defeat a common threat. As the series continues, Vegeta remains hot-blooded and mostly aloof, but becomes less evil and gains more and more respect from his new allies.

    • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Early on, Viral is evil and sees it his duty to kill humans on sight. Later in the show, Viral joins forces with the humans and is accepted into their group, who treat him with respect and trust him with important missions despite his previous genocidal attempts.
