Do We Have This? Seen It a Million Times. Needs a Better Description.

You're filming a big military picture, and you want to keep your core actors in the forefront, but the action shifts from ground to sea to air combat. Solution? Suddenly your ground-pounders have become expert seamen and skilled aviators!

Examples:

  • Happened all the time in Space: Above and Beyond. In one episode they were pilots, while the next week saw them performing ground combat or even covert infiltration/demolition missions.
  • In Wing Commander the hot-shot pilots are recruited to infiltrate an enemy ship, a mission that would typically be relegated to a marine detachment.
  • Army Air Corps fighter jocks that survived Pearl Harbor are given new assignments as bomber pilots. It's a totally different kind of flying, altogether.

I'm sorry you had to be right about your "Do we have this?" suspicions. What you describe is the essence of a Do Anything Soldier.
