In Garbo Talks Gilbert's mother, who is dying, is a big Greta Garbo fan. Gilbert's Quest to find Garbo and get her to visit his mother is the plot of the film. Garbo is only shown near the end, from the back.

Every time Glee does a homage episode, they act like this about the celebrity of the week: What would Madonna/Britney/Michael do? Rachel and Kurt have a more sustained but also less blatant version of this when it comes to Broadway stars, especially Barbara Streisand, of whom they're both practically expies, especially Rachel.

    • Minor supervillain Pulsar in the Champions Universe had an obsession with Morgan Fairchild as one of his running gags.

    • Similarly, and better known to the internet, Deadpool is a huge fan of Bea Arthur (RIP.)

Why does the hero have to be a celebrity? can't it be an athlete, politician, famous artist or other researchable figure?

    • Film: Big Night is about a pair of brothers with a failing restaurant. They think that if they prepare a great meal for visiting singer Louis Prima it will save them. Prima doesn't show; turns out he was never even invited by the guy who said he'd invite him.
    • Play/film: Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. About a James Dean fanclub that comes together at the 20th anniversary of his death. Needless to say, Dean doesn't appear.

I'm not sure what you mean, captainsandwich. All of those types of people you listed would be celebrities.

Many people think "celebrity" means strictly a media figure, actor, pop singer, TV show host or the like.

Laverne And Shirley: After they move to California they have an almost-life size cutout photo of The Beatles. In the Opening Montage they hand-kiss the four of them on the way to work.
