Crappy Birthday

Everything goes wrong on a birthday

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
The cake burnt, the candles melted and all the presents are clothes. What a fantastic birthday!

In fiction, especially if the celebrating character is a Butt Monkey, their birthday party will go wrong in every direction.

  • In Candyfloss by Jacqueline Wilson, Floss' birthday starts out great but turns out bad when she finds out her mother's family is moving to Australia for six months because of her stepfather's promotion.
  • In the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book Dog Days, Greg's birthday plays this so straight it's almost exaggerated. His presents are lame, his birthday money in confiscated, his uncle's dog eats the cake, and his 'make-up' present of a fish is eaten by Rodrick's fish.

  • Company, the entire plot, although Sondheim has proposed that it all takes place on a psychiatrist's couch.

That trope is themed to horrific things happening on certain dates. This is just about birthday parties going hilariously wrong.

    • Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Something almost always goes wrong on Buffy's birthday. Some examples: On her 17th birthday, a vampire crashes her surprise party and she opens an arm in a box (which tries to strangle her). For her 18th birthday, the watchers' council take away Buffy's super strength and then lock her in a house with a crazy vamp who kidnapped her mom. On her 19th birthday, Buffy's romantic plans are interrupted by an awkward surprise party. At Buffy's 20th birthday party, her sister, Dawn, has a meltdown and cuts herself after learning she is actually a blob of mystical energy formed into a "person." On her 21st party, a wish and a spell gone wrong traps the gang in Buffy's house... with a monster.

    • The VeggieTales episode "Robin Good And His Not-So-Merry Man" also featured the story, "Lenny And The Lost Birthday", where Lenny (played by Junior Asparagus) is dismayed to find that seemingly no one has remembered his birthday, which is on March 1st, and everything starts going wrong. In the end, it's subverted, because it turns out that his birthday was actually the next day, because it was a leap year.

^^ Buffy's birthday misfortunes are lampshaded on what would have been her 22nd, which isn't celebrated. Something still goes wrong, of course. It's Tuesday night.
