Unrequited Sexuality

Making your loved one who is not gay love you back

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
So you have Incompatible Orientation at work. How do you make someone love you back when that person is straight? Turn them gay through your best efforts like making your feelings known and the like of course!

Examples:

Anime and Manga
  • In Karakuridouji Ultimo Runa infamously tries to rape his crush Yamato and win him over. Doesn't work.

Live-Action TV
  • In Glee Kurt tries to turn his crush Finn gay and fails since he's already with Rachel.

    Insignificant
Needs a title that does not sound like dialogue.

    • In Peter David's Supergirl, Andy makes a stab at this with Linda (but backs off when it's clear that, no, Linda is definitely straight):
Linda: I thought lesbians didn't "recruit".
Andy: Yeah, well, at the last big meeting it was decided that we all had free will.

Make it a little broader and easier to trope, I think. Unrequited Sexuality.

^If you're making it that broad, we already have it: Incompatible Orientation.

^ Cure Your Gays seems like it's a better match in the "we already have this" sweepstakes.

^I meant that Unrequited Sexuality sounds like Incompatible Orientation, not the whole trope in general. Anyway, I'd say that 'one person trying to change someone else's orientation because they, the first person, are in love with them, the second person' is specific enough to be split from Cure Your Gays.

See also If Its You Its Okay. Just to toss in a suggestion, maybe Sexual Re Orientation?

    • In Chasing Amy the guy almost gets Amy to go hetero but for a screw up near the end... I think. It's been a while.

But Incombatible Orientation just deals with being in love with someone of a different orientation. It doesn't have anything to do with trying to convert them.

^^Maybe Attempted Sexual Reorientation? From the looks of the examples here, it doesn't appear that it works very often.

^ Sounds good. The lack of success may be to avoid Unfortunate Implications that sexual identity/orientation is really easy to change, and that others can do it to you.

    • Becker: Becker accidentally was booked for a gay cruise. After arriving home, Reggie said that Becker got a message from his cabinmate for the cruise, stating that he knew Becker wasn't gay but could change his mind if he gave him five minutes.

I don't think this is really splittable...

I'm discarding this because it has had no comments or updates since November of 2011 and appears to overlap substantially with existing tropes. If you want to figure out whether there's a useful split in here and see it through to completion, please go ahead and undiscard.
