Up For Grabs

The hero returns from a Want of a Nail quest, wherein he's accidentally eliminated loved ones from his life, then fought to get them back into it. He gazes into the eyes of his lady and says, "I've missed you." She giggles. "You just saw me five minutes ago, stupid!"

Examples: - Misfits: Curtis and Alisha after Curtis's Mental Time Travel adventure. - The Family Man: Jack Campbell wakes up married to a woman he once dated, years ago. "How can you do that?" "What?" "Look at me like you haven't seen me every day for the last ten years."

Maybe this is simply a stock phrase?

Alternate names: The Near Miss, Already Missed

Needs A Better Name, this one doesn't really indicate that it's do with time travel/For Want Of A Nail in particular.

    • In Back To The Future, Marty spends a week in 1955, then travels back to the night he first went back in time, and is relieved to see Jennifer the following morning, much to her confusion.
Jennifer: Marty, you're acting like you haven't seen me in a week. Marty: I haven't.

    • In the first-season finale of Justice League, one side-effect of the villain messing with history is that Batman-as-we-know-him never existed. At the end, when history is restored, Batman is puzzled as to why everybody's suddenly so happy to see him.

    • The Time Travelers Wife: a rare example where both people have this reaction, even though only one of them is the time traveler.
    • And an inverted example in the S4 premiere of True Blood: Sookie feels like she was gone for a short period of time, but in reality due to it being the faerie realm, she was gone for nearly 13 months.

Could this be expanded to include alternative worlds with different timezones?

For example, in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lucy visits Narnia through the Wardrobe. Her visit lasts several hours. When she returns, she goes all "I'm back! I'm well!" only to realize that she's been missing for only a few minutes.

But For Me It Was Yesterday is a better trope name than the current one, as Sorely Missed sounds like either a trope about merely missing someone, or more likely (based on quirks of naming), about a failed attack causing injury to the person attacking. An alternative naming approach might be to go for something along the lines of Asymmetric Chronology Exclamation - that's probably a bit wordy, but someone might be inspired by it to come up with a nicer version.

Inverted on Doctor Who when Rose thinks she's only been gone 12 earth hours but it turns out she's been gone for 12 months.

Cool, so this is my first YKTTW. What do I do now? Can I hand this off to someone else to develop, like the coward that I am?

How is this to be distinguished from Year Inside Hour Outside?

^^ Yes, by saying it's Up For Grabs.

^^ The distinction, as I understand it, is that this is about how the characters interact afterwards -- the "I'm back." "Oh, did you go somewhere?" conversation.

    • There's a Star Trek Voyager episode where one of the characters gets stuck in a Negative Space Wedgie for a couple of months, and is upset that his girlfriend didn't miss him more: but for her it was closer to two hours.
    • One of Poul Anderson's Time Patrol stories has a guy who gets stuck in the past for a few years, then returned to almost the time he left, and faces the emotional stress of realising that he's been away for years but his wife's hardly noticed he was gone.

Year Inside Hour Outside is specifically about other dimensions. This trope is about Time-Travel.

Happens in the Batman The Brave And The Bold episode "Menace of the Madniks!" when Batman and Booster Gold travel back in time to see Blue Beetle just before he dies. Beetle is bewilderd as to why Batman is treating him with such affection and acting like its been years since they saw each other.

If yiho is "specifically" about other dimensions, then why not expand it?

As an example; (Alternatively, this trope can also be invoked by time travel, where one character spends X time in the past/time-bubble/future while another character spends Y time in "normal" time.)

    • In the Red Dwarf episode "Stasis Leak", Lister gets to travel back to just before the accident that killed the rest of the crew. When he encounters his friend Petersen he greets him effusively, to Petersen's confusion and embarrassment.

In Elf Quest: Kings of the Broken Wheel the elves and troll who've been taken forward in time are reunited, after what seems like days, with the ones who were left behind who've been waiting for thousands of years.

Title sounds like a snowclone of But For Me It Was Tuesday; might lead to confusion.

    • On Doctor Who, in the episode "The Eleventh Hour", the Doctor leaves for what he thinks is a quick five-minute spin and comes back to find that he accidentally jumped forward twelve years, to the anger of the "little girl" he left behind.
