Cop Killer

Do We Have This One??

Exactly What It Says on the Tin, a Cop Killer is someone who, for whatever reason, has killed a police officer, and can now expect quite a bit of focused attention from the law enforcement community. For obvious reasons, police officers don't like it when someone kills another cop. Could be because they consider themselves a Band of Brothers, or simply because they know it could easily have been them that was killed. Sometimes, it might just be that the cop who was killed was one of several cops killed as part of a crime spree, meaning that the killer is obviously far too dangerous to the community at large to be allowed to escape.

There's also the notion that killing a cop is striking a blow against society itself (more so than killing a member of some other profession, like a dentist or an accountant). Same goes for killing a prosecutor or a judge.

    • This came up in an episode of Dragnet 1967ff., where they were after a cop killer. A storekeeper says something like "you cops always go after a cop killer harder that when someone kills a civilian." Friday counters that if a person is desparate enough to kill a cop they'd mow down civilians with even more impunity, so it's that much more important to catch him.
    • In the first episode of some Ninties Police Procedural a guy goes on a shooting spree and kills a bunch of cops right outside the precinct house, then is himself shot and dragged into the house. He dies while waiting for paramedics to show up, and his relatives sue the police force alleging that the cops purposely let him bleed to death in revenge.

In real life knowingly killing a Police Officer qualifies one for the death penalty in all states with one in use. That's if the cops don't (justifiability given you have demonstrated a will and means to kill them) kill you before you can be arrested.

    • Real Life example; Upon being released from jail a man named Raul Moat shot his ex and her new partner (killing the later). He then proceded to go on the lam and claim he was "hunting" police officers (although he only shot one, and only succeeded in blinding them) since she claimed that she was seeing a policeman to try and scare him off.
      • This also lead to a subversion when a newspaper falsly claimed that Rockstar (makers of Grand Theft Auto) were making a game based on it. They ended up being sued for libal.

    • Happens occasionally for unsubs in Criminal Minds, most notably in the episode Brothers in Arms with an unsub that targets policemen. In another episode, there was a cop-killing unsub who turned out to be a cop himself.
