Blind Black Guy

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:

I've noticed that an very common form of Twofer Token Minority is the blind black guy. He's blind, and he's black.

Examples:

Real Life example: Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles. (And obviously, many others.)

Do We Have This One?? Worth troping?

    • The Rutles had retired New Orleans bluesman (IIRC) Blind Lemon Pie, who claimed to have invented The Rutles' music, although his wife retorted that he only made this and similar claims for the benefit of TV documentary crews.
    • One episode of Jonathan Creek had a black guy who pretended to be blind to get sympathy or whatever. He got his comeuppance when a fat, elderly lady undressed in front of him and he couldn't admit being squicked by her appearance.

I believe Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles both appeared in an ad for a laser disc player, on the grounds that it had superior sound quality to VCRs.

Was Bleeding Gums from The Simpsons blind, or did he just really love shades?

^Bleeding Gums Murphy just really loved shades. He was based on Blind Willie Witherspoon who was blind though, and learned his craft from him.
BG: I learned at the feet of Blind Willie Witherspoon.
flash to younger BG in a bar
Willie: I've been playing jazz for thirty years and I just can't make a go of it. I want you to have my saxophone.
BG: This isn't a saxophone, it's an umbrella!
Willie: So I've been playing a umbrella for thirty years? Why didn't anybody tell me?
BG: Heh, we all thought it was funny. chuckles
    Willie: That's not funny.

Disney channel movie Going to the Mat was about a blind (white) kid, who played music. He had a music teacher or something, who was a Blind Black Guy. At some point, the teacher asked the kind if he wanted to be a musician, and the kid said, (don't remember the exact words) "That's so cliche." The teacher said "Did you really just say that to me?"

British miniseries Soul Survivors features a soul fan named Otis trying to reunite his favourite band for one last performance. Unfortunately one member of the band is dead. They arrange a memorial service for him and while people are standing around singing a blind black man makes his way past, incidentally causing quite a few women to jump and look disconcerted as he passes. He reaches Otis, lowers his sunglasses and winks at him, Otis goes slack-jawed for a moment. Turns out he faked his death to drop out of the limelight.

I seem to remember a character but I don't remember from where, who was a blind black guy in the KKK. He was blind from birth and didn't know he was black.

    that was from Chappelles Show

Real Life / Troper Tale: at the Inaugaration of Barack Obama Concert, Herbie Hancock was wearing sunglasses to evoke Stevie Wonder appearance. I then went on to meet Stevie Wonder at the Washington Monument the very next day.

if we decide to include any of that story, it should probably be the unspoilered part.
