Gender Retaliation

When someone has a bad experience with the opposite gender and takes it out on the whole gender.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
A character has had several bad experiences with the opposite gender and decides to take it out on the entire gender.

In extreme cases, this can occur after only one bad experience. In more extreme cases, they may band together a whole vigilante group. In even more extreme cases, this may lead to Gendercide.

Compare Straw Feminist, Straw Misogynist and Woman Scorned.

Examples:

Western Animation
  • On Daria, Ms. Barch is bitter over her husband leaving her and takes it out on her male students and pretty much any other male who crosses her. But she softens a bit around sensitive Nice Guy Mr. O'Neil after she sees he's one of the good ones.

The Plains Of Passage: Jondalar is captured by a S'Armuna tribe which is ruled over by Attora; she hates all men because her mate was very cruel to her before he died. (She killed him). The men of the tribe are all imprisoned in one small area. The S'Armuna don't know that having sex=making babies; they think that a woman is impregnated by the Great Earth Mother who chooses the "spirit" of someone nearby as part of the process. Attora believes that if they cage up all the males, the only spririts around for the Mother to choose from will be female so they'll have only female babies.

Not even sure if it is available anymore, but Ms 45 is an early psycho-vigilante movie, with a mute seamstress going on a rather fabulous man-killing rampage after getting raped twice in one day. Directed by Abel Ferrara.

Do we have a supertrope for this? Because this is such a cause of prejudice against one gender, nationality, religion, etc, it could be worth covering that as well (within this trope, or by creating a sister version)

I'm pretty sure this is meant to be a supertrope genderwise, as we've already got Revenge Against Men. Perhaps a merge with that trope would be in order?

With the Ms45 example, how is a rampage of killing people "fabolous"? Reading the page for it, it says she eventually shoots any man she meets...that's not exactly fabolous, it is more a sign of a Villain Protagonist (and not the sympathetic Anti Villain type, if she is killing even innocent men).

Anyways, I remembered an example from Justice League:

In Justice League, Aresia, lived through a war where there were many male soldiers. The effects of the war drove her to hate men and she then attempted Gendercide. Fortunately, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl defeated her and stopped her plan. However, it should be noted, if not for a man, she would not have lived as a man saved her when she was young from drowning and sacrificed his life to save her and bring her to the Amazons on Themyscira. Aresia decides to go through with her plan even after learning this but ultimately drowns when her plan fails.

In the manga MAR, Rapunzel and her brother Girom were abused by their mother, so they killed her with an axe... and go out of their way to torture and kill any other women. Even though Rapunzel's an (ugly) woman herself...

Sonnie claims that her aggression in the Beastie Baiting arena is because she was raped and her opponents in the arena are men, but the real reason is she's not controlling her beast via an empathic link; her brain has been physically transplanted into the beast's body, and she's controlling her original body via an empathic link.
