In some shows there is sometimes a huge secret that the audience knows, but most of the characters don't. In some cases some minor character might end up finding out the big secret in mid season. Or in some super hero show, one of the underlings of the Big Bad might figure out the hero's secret identity. Once the big secret gets out, the show will go through some major changes. However, the person meets an unfortunate end before they even get to have the chance to use this information to their benefit. The reporter could get killed before they can type the first draft, the minion is destroyed by their superior before they could tell them the hero's identity, etc. Basically it is a way to keep the show on status quo for the time being.
