Embarrassing Cell Phone Ring

A character's cell phone rings at the wrong moment and the ringtone is inappropriate for the situation.

Page Type:
Trope
Characters who never turn off their cell phones should be careful about the ringtone they choose. Sometimes their phone will ring at a particularly awkward moment, and the ringtone will be inappropriate.

Examples:

  • Quai D Orsay: Arthur's ringtone is a Metallica song. Not the best way to be taken seriously when it rings in the middle of a diplomatic summit.

Happens to Astrid during a job interview in "Brown Betty"... but I don't remember if the ring itself was embarrassing, just that the timing was bad. It happened to be her former boss.

    From Cell Phone:

    • A British newspaper cartoon from the 1920s correctly predicted that when mobile telephones become popular, they would be a constant source of social embarrassment by ringing in awkward situations, such as when you are getting married!

It would be nice to know the actual source of this example.

Is this just embarrassing ringtones or the cellphone ringing at the wrong time?

Maybe change it to Inappropriate Cell Phone Ring and include badly timed phone calls as well as terrible ringtones.

In Sherlock it's not the ringtone that she changes -- it's the text alert tone assigned to her number. Moriarty's Staying Alive ringtone might also be an example. It's hard to be menacing with the Bee Gees providing a bouncy little riff.

Not necessarily embarrassing (but arguably close)...

    • In the Supernatural episode, "The Real Ghostbusters," evil spirit children trapped Sam and Dean along with many patrons at a hotel convention. To get the spirits to free everyone, Sam and Dean recruited an actress to play the ghost of the stern, turn-of-the-century school mistress (who Sam and Dean mistakenly banished earlier) to scare the ghost boys into releasing the hold on the hotel. Everything was going well until the actress' cell phone rang with a jaunty hip-hop tune. Cue her Oh Crap moment as the evil spirit children smiled menacingly, realizing she wasn't the school mistress and they had no reason to be scared.

In one episode of Star Trek The Next Generation, when Worf's son Alexander joins his father aboard the Enterprise, everybody was trying to reach Worf when he was with Captain Picard who was explaining him some assignment. It looked like the communicators couldn't be turned off, and both Picard and Worf got really annoyed.

I also suggested this. Someone pointed out the duplicate and thinks we should join the two threads together. Any preference as to which thread we keep (I prefer my description)?

I've already transferred most of the examples from your thread
