Edge Scale

Object, often car, teetering on the edge of an abyss

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
I can't find this! Do we have it?

An object, most often a car with people, is balanced on the edge of a drop. More spiteful/comiedic works will have the object fall off due to a small shift in weight (such as straw). Related to Wafer Thin Mint.

Currently covered by Literal Cliffhanger I think, but splittable.

    • Taken to an extreme in Mass Effect 2, when Commander Shepard has the oppurtunity to explore a whole spaceship that's crashed and teetering on a cliff edge.

    • Happens in a first season episode of The Simpsons with their rented van.
    • In one of the Wile E Coyote And The Roadrunner shorts on The Looney Tunes Show, Wile E. blows up a bridge from both ends to trap the Roadrunner. Unfortunately, now the bridge is teetering, and Wile E. has to keep in in balance as the Roadrunner moves around.
    • On the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Homeless Hare", a construction foreman harrassing Bugs finds himself on top of the building on a plank, with a pile of bricks as counterweight. In comes Bugs to remove the bricks one by one, and the foreman has to take off one article of clothing to keep from falling over. Finally, there's only one brick left and he is in his skivvies, and Bugs wants to take away one more brick...

    Teetering Vehicle is perfect. Evocative.

Happens in the "Operation P.R.O.M." episode of Venture Bros.

In the Classic Disney Short "Donald's Lucky Day", Donald Duck is teetering over a high pier on a plank, and on the other end is a cat he's been trying to avoid. If it leaves, Donald falls, and if the cat comes towards him, he also falls, so he alternates between shooing it away and luring it back to keep from taking the plunge.

Happens to a prospector's hut in Alaska in Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush, with Charlie and the prospector inside. The scene manages to be both hilarious and nail-biting at the same time.

I swear this has been in Thundercats (the original), at least once. I want to say the one where Panthro and Snarf switch bodies, and the time Lion-o went joyriding in the Thundertank.

Teetering Vehicle works for a title, that makes 3. I see enough examples as well, description is a bit iffy though.

Literal Cliffhanger is supposed to cover this in its fourth variation, however I noticed that it has no vehicle examples. Perhaps you can collect examples here and add them to that trope.
