Press Pass Hat

Showing you're a member of the press by sticking your press pass in your hat

Trope
Back when hats were regularly fashionable, the way someone from the Press would designated his/her status was to have his press pass in his hat, between the hat and the band around the hat's crown. Because of details being omitted, it was typically a white placard with the word Press printed on it.

Clark Kent/Superman in the old Fleisher Superman cartoons was fond of this.

This is one of those Seen It A Million Times things where I know there's a lot of examples, but none are coming to mind.

Possibly the reporter in the Ellery Queen TV series from the 70s (set in the 40s), but I couldn't swear to it.

    • The Brady Bunch: when Peter gets a slot on the school newspaper he calls himself "Scoops" Brady and wears a hat like this.

Definitely a good one. It'd be interesting to find out when (if?) the Press Pass Hat was actually a Real Life thing. Wouldn't surprise me if it was mostly invented for one or another of the visual arts.

At some point (at least by the '70s?), it becomes a Discredited Trope.

Shows up (long after it should have been discredited) in This Hostess Ad with Superman for Delicious Fruit Pies.

The Three Stooges did this in one of their shorts. Moe and Larry took "Press" buttons off a vending machine, but Curly used a "Pull" lever.

    • In an episode of Police Squad, a mob hitman wears one of these hats and the guard immediately lets him pass... even though said hitman is making no effort to conceal the numerous guns he's carrying.

Google "reporter hat", and you'll get a selection of fedora images, each with a press card stuck in the band.

If Futurama is any indication, reporters will still be wearing them in the 31st Century. Most notably Scoop Chang of the Beijing Bugle.

Perhaps add the practical point that this freed up both the reporter's hands for note taking before the current prevalence of lanyards for credentials.
