Mustache of Yesterday

When a character who does not presently have facial hair, has facial hair in a flashback.

Name Space:
Main
Page Type:
Trope
During a flashback, a character who is clean shaven in the present will inevitably have facial hair during flashback.

Examples:
  • Everybody Loves Raymond. During the flashback to when Ray and Debra first moved in, Robert had a mustache.
  • Home Improvement. During a flashback, Tim had facial hair, and Al was clean shaven.
  • The Venture Bros.. While going through Hank and Dean's deaths, there was one part where Rusty and Brock both had mustaches. This is lampshaded where they remember how ridiculous they looked with them.

Friends. Ross had a Porn Stache in high school.

I think this is because a lot of shows in the recent past have characters who could plausibly have been young men in the 70s, when the Porn Stache was at its height. In twenty years, this will be replaced by a new trope.

    • In the White Collar episode "Need To Know", Neal is amused to find out that Peter used to have a mustache, and more amused upon seeing a photo of it: "I expected more Magnum PI and less Super Mario." Later in the season, "Forging Bonds" takes place almost entirely in flashbacks to the period when Peter was still wearing the mustache.

    • Sneakers. Martin Bishop is clean shaven in the present, but back in college (when he still went by the name Martin Brice) he had a mustache.

Coach Z has been shown to have had a Porn Stache paired with a Funny Afro back in the 70's and probably the 80's.

Often overlaps with I Was Quite A Fashion Victim.

The Nanny: In the flashbacks of "The Kibbutz", the teenaged Fran and Val see a young mustachioed Maxwell in an interview, mentioning how glad he was passing on a musical about singing cats. Niles also has a mustache in the flashback.

Bill Adama's mustache in Battlestar Galactica. Also a case of Actor Allusion.

There was a flashback episode of Star Trek The Next Generation in which Riker was going through memories from past seasons; I'm sure that there must have been an inversion there because some of those memories were probably from before he literally grew the beard.

The names a little bit misleading, it makes me think of Important Haircut (somebody dramatically shaves off their mustache). Maybe call it Mustache Of Yesteryear to make the time scale we're talking about more clear.

In the Doctor Who episode "Mawdryn Undead", the presence or absence of a mustache distinguished the Brigadier from two different time periods.

Do "stuck-up character used to have crazy hair in his youth" examples count?

    • In How I Met Your Mother, a flashback in the first episode shows Ted with a goatee. He is almost always clean shaven. It is later revealed that any time he grows facial hair, he dubs it his "break-up goatee" following a bad breakup, and shaving it off is his statement that he is ready to begin dating again.

Chabal: Hair Today Gone Tomorrow already covers the head hair. We could probably tweak/expand it to include outrageous facial hair as well.

    • An episode of Sea Lab 2021 had a brief flashback in which all of the male character had mustaches. In fact, they were flashingback to the time they all decided to grow facial hair.

In Uncle Buck, when Buck is looking at a picture of himself with his brother, he's shown to have had a mustache then.

What about when a bald man is shown to have wild hair in his youth? Truth In Television for many of us old goats.

In Home Improvement, the pilot of Tool Time showed Al was clean-shaven while Tim had a bushy beard. Ironically Tim always pokes fun of Al's beard.

Another is Doug on King Of Queens has a mustache whenever they flash back to his early years with Carrie.

Why not also call this trope "Flashback Facial Hair"?

Also from How I Met Your Mother, Barney was originally a New Age Retro Hippie with a thin beard. After being dumped by his girlfriend and adopting his present day persona, the beard came off.

I believe we have a trope about how growing beard signifies character growth. What was the title?

    • Arthur. A variation of this appears in, "Arthur's Eyes," in which D.W. finds a photo of her parents when they were younger, and sees her father has a beard, which leads her to believe it's not really her father she sees in the picture, and goes to demand an explanation from her parents.

Highlander had a few flashbacks where Duncan had a mustache and occasionally a goatee. It probably was simply fitting into the styles of the era in his case, given he's a 400 year old immortal.
