* {{Anvilicious}}: Creativity is good, AdultsAreUseless, and it's up to the children to change the world.
* AssPull: A common criticism of the series is that many of the solutions and prophecies seem to be [[NewRulesAsThePlotDemands improvised]].
* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The manga gives it a rather animeseque style that some feels really befits the series, making it seem almost like a CrapSaccharineWorld.
* CompleteMonster: [[BigBad The One Who Is The One]], deciding all life was meant to cow before him after being shunned for his affinity of magic, established the New Order, became its [[ANaziByAnyOtherName brutal dictator]], and quickly turned his new kingdom into a hellish realm for all the inhabitants, executing anyone who practices any form of magic or art to kick off his reign; this [[{{Hypocrite}} despite using magic and owning works of art himself]]. Massacring and vivisecting men, women, and children by the hundreds for both experimentation and fun, The One simultaneously bombs and unleashes plagues onto civilian populations to wipe out any rebels against him. [[BadBoss His own minions]] and [[AbusiveParents son Pearce]] faring no better, The One sadistically executes [[YouHaveFailedMe those who fail him]], has no concern for them getting caught in the crossfire of his plans, and abuses and eventually turns the latter into a vessel for his own soul. As the ArchEnemy of the Allgood siblings, The One tortures and murders their friends [[spoiler:and parents]] in front of them and torments them throughout the series. When his plan to "purge" the world of those unwilling to worship him fails, The One attempts to unleash the undead souls of his victims onto humanity to wipe it out then rule over the ashes that remain. A psychopath who [[ControlFreak hated everything that he wasn't in full control of]], The One is one of the most wicked young adult fiction villains to have ever been conceived.
* CriticalDissonance: The books have sold at least one million copies, but the critical reception of the book has been negative. ''El Geek furioso de la literatura'', a Spanish reviewer, has called it one of the worst ideas put on paper with a laughable plot.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments:
** When Whit and Wisty are put in a mental hospital, Wisty rationalises it as her being insane. The manga makes it even ''funnier'' by showcasing Wisty with a really ''really'' cuckoolander looking face, while Whit just stares at her like he cannot believe what she is doing.
** When Wisty tries to turn Byron into a pumpkin, she turns him into a lion instead. She says "No! I meant pumpkin!"
** Whit and Wisty are ordered to clean their cell toilet with a toothbrush. The manga shows an absolute ''pristine'' toilet room that the guard still says is filthy.
* HarsherInHindsight: A politician gains a loyal following among many adults despite the terrible things he plans on doing when he's made the leader of the free world. Once he manages that goal, he starts having those that don't fit into his "perfect" world detained by a private police/military force. Much of the resistance against him comes in the form of teenagers and young adults, who are dismissed or outright hated by older people for daring to step out of line. The first book was released in 2009, but it feels eerily prescient of the United States political climate of the late 2010's.
* SeasonalRot: Some feel that the series should have ''stayed'' as a trilogy and that the fourth and fifth books were nowhere near as good as the first three.
* {{Squick}}: Invoked. The IncurableCoughOfDeath that spreads through the society targeting dissents is designed to gross people out when somebody afflicted coughs up a black ooze.
