* {{Anvilicious}}: Pratchett himself would admit that painting modern shopping malls as an absolute evil was being a tad too closed-minded.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: The Death of Rats, both to fans and to Pratchett himself (he says he has no idea where the character came from, but he liked him too much for him to be lost with the other Deaths at the end of the book).
* EpilepticTrees: Windle Poons' desire to be reincarnated as a woman resulted in a theory that Tiffany Aching is his reincarnation.
* GeniusBonus: The bit about the High Energy Magic Building says the senior wizards may regret not paying attention when their juniors build that thing in the squash court. This is a reference to the world's first nuclear reactor, which was built in the squash court of the University of Chicago. The reference gets more direct when they ''do'' in fact build the thing in ''Literature/TheScienceOfDiscworld'', and it is indeed the magical equivalent of a nuclear power station.
* HarsherInHindsight: Windle Poons accepting his death, as he had accomplished everything he wanted with his life. That's very much ''not'' the way Terry Pratchett went out.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Bill Door's choice of possible last words before his showdown with the new Death? [[Series/DoctorWho "I don't want]] [[Film/AvengersInfinityWar to go."]]
** The Bursar compares the canapés provided for Death at the Going Away Party with [[LeavingFoodForSanta Leaving Food for the Hogfather]], and reflects that the two figures are very different. [[Literature/{{Hogfather}} Five years later]], Death would be SubbingForSanta.
* NightmareFuel: The true nature of the shopping mall during the climax, when Windle is rampaging through it to buy time for the others to escape. It's ''literally'' a living entity, and once it stops hiding it, it becomes a violent WombLevel.
** The New Death.
-->'''Death:''' [[AC:A ''crown?!'' I never wore a crown!]]
-->'''New Death:''' ''You never wanted to rule.''
* TheWoobie: You have to feel sorry for Ludmilla, considering her condition and having to live with [[MyBelovedSmother the well-meaning but overbearing Mrs. Cake for a mother]]. At least she gets a happy ending.
