* BrokenBase:
** Some fans feel that creating original animation for the videos ruins the whole point of [=AMVs=], while others find them just as funny and creative as any other fan-made material.
** Which of the Anthologies are the best? While there are a number of fans who feel that [[FirstInstallmentWins the first is the best because of how iconic it was]], there are those who [[EvenBetterSequel prefer the later installments]] for how longer they are and how much more varied the sequences are.
** The NSFW clips. Some fans love them and think they are hilarious, others feel they go to far and betray the spirit of the show.
* HarsherInHindsight: One that happed ''even before it was released!'' ''VII'' has a parody of ''WebVideo/ProJared'', several months after the revelations that cost both his position with Normal Boots and his reputation. Many commenters have noticed that the skit had ''really'' bad timing which even the credits of ''VII'' itself admit.
* HilariousInHindsight
** The ''WesternAnimation/{{Animaniacs}}'' sequences in ''II'' were funny to begin with, but were made even more fitting with The Hub's acquisition of the aforementioned series.
** Additionally, the first of them is "Boingy Boingy Boingy" set to Apple Bloom bouncing on a jumping Big Macintosh. Pinkie Pie would actually recite that line in "Games Ponies Play".
** The second Anthology has two shorts that feature Spike as [[WesternAnimation/{{Up}} Dug]]. [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirls I think no more needs to be said.]]
** One bit in ''II'' uses Music/WeirdAlYankovic's "I Think I'm a Clone Now". [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E12PinkiePride Come 2014...]]
** The original ''Anthology'' has a bit with Snips and Snails as Music/InsaneClownPosse. In ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks'' they try [[PissTakeRap and fail miserably]] to do a rap number.
** ''Anthology II'' has a PMV sequence with clips of Rarity set to "Diamond In the Rough". Fast forward to 2014, and Rarity would refer to the Diamond Dogs as "diamonds in the rough" in the "Player Piano" [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyEquestriaGirlsRainbowRocks Rainbow Rocks]] short.
** ''Anthology III'' has the "Twilight Beam" bit, a mashup of ''[[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS3E5MagicDuel Magic Duel]]'' and ''Anime/RebuildOfEvangelion'', featuring Twilight vaporizing a mountainside with a WaveMotionGun spell. ''Anthology III'' premiered a couple of weeks into Season 4's run; [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS4E26TwilightsKingdomPart2 fast forward to the end of the season, and...]]
** ''Anthology VI'' has a skit with someone [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS7E23SecretsAndPies refusing to consume something Pinkie Pie made for her, and Pinkie growing infuriated in response.]]
*** Also in VI, an animated skit has Trixie exclaim "I HATE MY DAD!" [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS8E5GranniesGoneWild A later episode]] would all-but explicitly introduce us to Trixie's father, who, according to WordOfGod, may very well be a deadbeat dad.
** The Series/MightyMorphinPowerRangers theme song PMV in the first Anthology is this since Hasbro bought the Franchise/PowerRangers franchise in 2018.
** Much like the [[WebVideo/AMVHell the series]] that inspired it, Ponies would also end at 7 entries.
%%* MemeticMutation: '''THANKS M.A. LARSON!!!'''
* NightmareFuel: "Creator/StephenKing's Equestria Girls" in ''Anthology III''. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwZlg-1Llbw Watch it here]], but if you don't want to, [[spoiler: it involves Human Twilight and Fluttershy standing around with a low-pitched horror chord in the background. Then, an arm comes out of Twilight's mouth, sucks Fluttershy's head until she turns grey, and the rest of her body falls off.]]
** From that same video, there is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhJ4yEW9zPga a recreation of the cursed tape]] from ''Film/TheRing''. Think that tape would be less scary with ponies? You'd be wrong. So very wrong.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_noJtGnbbk This little bit]] is either this or a [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments Funny Moment]]:
--> '''Spike''' (to Owlowiscious): All you need to know as that I'm number one, and you're number two! Got it?
--> [[spoiler: ([[Film/{{Insidious}} The Lipstick-Faced Demon]] appears behind him and screams)]]
--> '''Spike''': WHOA! Dude, that's creepy.
** Another one that can also be considered a Funny Moment, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LLXGM7cg_M Pinkamena doing]] [[WesternAnimation/TheRenAndStimpyShow "I'm So Angry"]].
** ''Ponies the Anthology II'' features a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaYAC5PtjD8 segment]] setting "[[Music/GustavHolst Mars, the Bringer of War]]" to a [[http://imalou.deviantart.com/art/Power-279753353 particularly creepy]] fan art of Princess Celestia.
** In ''Ponies The Anthology II'' there's a segment of the Time Machine from 2002 where Hartdegen arrives in 2037 and gets arrested for safety purposes. A little bit scary right there, until he looks up in the sky and sees the broken moon descending down on Earth, but Nightmare Moon is flying through the sky, laughing...
** The opening to ''VI'' is an homage to the beginning of ''Film/TwentyEightDaysLater'' and that ends with a creepy replication of Celestia set to the brief Bible passage at the end of "[[Music/JohnnyCash The Man Comes Around]]". It works to surprising effect.
** The sudden appearance of [[Creator/TimCurry Tim Curry's]] [[Film/It1990 Pennywise the Dancing Clown]] in ''VI'' can definitely be considered off-putting to some. [[NightmareRetardant Thankfully this time he's only booping the ponies.]]
* ToughActToFollow: The very first ''Anthology'' video is a classic piece of Brony fan work and an iconic part of the fandom's humble beginnings. Many feel that the others, though not bad, have a few good moments but are weaker overall.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Due to the use of ''My Little Pony'' it's not uncommon to see parents letting their kids watch the anthologies online or take them to panels showing them, not realizing that the humor in them is often completely not for kids.
