''[=OpenArena=]'' is a [[Platform/IBMPersonalComputer PC]] FirstPersonShooter for Windows, Platform/{{UNIX}} and Platform/MacOS. The game is an open-source clone of ''VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena'', with the vanilla ArenaShooter gameplay kept intact: score frags to win the game using a balanced set of weapons each designed for different situations. As is the way of things in the genre the game belongs to, the style of play is very fast and requires skill to be played successfully online.

The gamemodes included are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament, Capture The Flag (all modes also in vanilla [=Q3=]), Harvester, One Flag CTF, Overload (these three from [=Q3=]'s ExpansionPack ''Team Arena'' included in vanilla) Elimination, CTF Elimination, Last Man Standing, Double Domination and Domination (all of these additions)

The game is compatible with many of the mods and maps done for [=Q3=]. Because ''[=OA=]'' is not finished, some of the many mods created for the original game couldn't be compatible.

There's also a "missionpack" addon, which acts as the game's stand-on for ''Quake III: Team Arena''.

The game can be downloaded from [[http://www.openarena.ws its official site]]. Its current version is 0.8.8. and can be downloaded [[http://www.moddb.com/games/openarena/downloads/openarena-088-full-version here]].

There are versions available for Platform/{{Android}} and Platform/{{Ouya}}, and the game itself can be downloaded via Desura.

A reboot, called ''[=OpenArena=] 3'' is being developed, with a release date to be announced.
----
![=OpenArena=] has examples of:
[-Several tropes which apply to VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena might apply here as well. Also, these tropes, unless noted otherwise, apply to 0.8.8.-]

%% (ZCE) * AbandonedWarehouse: am_underworks, blitzkrieg3, oa_dm3, oa_reptctf11.
%% (ZCE) * {{Animesque}}: The style of the game, or at least, what it tries to be.
%% (ZCE) * ArmorPoints: Expressed in an icon+number fashion.
* ArtificialBrilliance: Bots will gib your body if you were carrying the [[SuicideAttack Kamikaze]] [[ThanatosGambit holdable]].
* BatmanCanBreatheInSpace: There're some space platform levels and just a bunch of the characters (Sarge, Grunt, Grism and S_Marine) have a space suit.
* BattleRoyaleGame: The Elimination, [[CaptureTheFlag CTF]] Elimination and Last Man Standing modes:
** Last Man Standing is regular Deathmatch split in shorter rounds where every player fights on their own in order to eradicate the rest of the players and be the last player on foot when the round ends.
** Elimination follows the same model and ruleset as LMS, but splits players in two teams, and each team fights to eradicate the enemy team.
** CTF Elimination follows the same model and ruleset as Elimination, but also adds the CaptureTheFlag flags, and thus rounds can also be won by capturing the enemy flag.
* {{BFG}}: Subverted. The game's version is less bulky than in [[VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena the source]], but it's still a Plasma Gun in steroids, and is still the most powerful weapon in the game.
* ChainsawGood: The Gauntlet. Like in the source material, it's a wrist-mounted circular saw.
* ChineseVampire: Kyonshi, who was inspired by [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} another hopping chinese vampire]].
%% (ZCE) * CompetitiveMultiplayer
* DeadlyRotaryFan: Found in the Deathmatch level pxlfan.
%% (ZCE) * DeathIsNotPermanent
%% (ZCE) * DeathTrap: Some Deathmatch levels such as oa_dm2 and have these.
* DefeatEqualsExplosion: Any player who dies while carrying the Kamikaze holdable powerup. When dying, (and if they're not gibbed) they will produce a huge explosion which shakes the arena.
* DoubleEdgedBuff: The Scout rune increases the carrier's movement speed, at the cost of not being able to gather armor.
%% (ZCE) * {{Flight}}: The namesake item, only available in two maps. (am_thornish and am_spacecont)
* FragileSpeedster: The Scout rune makes one of its carrier. In exchange for increasing the carrier's speed, it negates armor, and disallows the carrier to pick up armor.
%% (ZCE) * GradualRegeneration: The Regeneration powerup.
%% (ZCE) * GrapplingHookPistol: The Grapple, now an official item.
* GratuitousFrench: Beret, when he dies, says "Et merde" ("And shit" in French).
* HighPressureBlood: In spite of it's art direction, the blood is more detailed and [[OverdrawnAtTheBloodBank more chunks appear from a single fragged player]].
%% (ZCE) * {{Joshikousei}}: Ayumi.
%% (ZCE) * LightningGun: The Lightning Gun.
* {{Mayincatec}}: oa_dm5 and am_mckinleyish2 take place at some ruins.
* MidairBobbing: Most of the pickups, including ammo packs, powerups, weapons, and even the flags in CaptureTheFlag and the control points in Domination and Double Domination perform a bobbing motion.
* MoreDakka: The Chaingun. The Machinegun is the starter version of the Chaingun.
%% (ZCE) * MsFanservice: Many of the females.
%% (ZCE) * NailEm: The Nailgun.
* NoPlotNoProblem: The game has next to no plot to talk about.
* PlayerElimination:
** Last Man Standing is a round-based teamless mode. All players get one or many lives, and battle to be the last one standing at the end of the round.
** Elimination is the team-based version of Last Man Standing. Here, all players get one life and are split in two teams. A round ends when all players in a team are eliminated.
** CTF Elimination is Elimination with CaptureTheFlag rules, so in addition to fragging enemies, players can win by capturing the enemy team's flag.
* RollerbladeGood: Ayumi and Jenna battle while skating on a pair of rollers.
* ShoutOut:
** Last Man Standing, Domination and Double Domination are taken from the namesake gametypes from ''VideoGame/UnrealTournament'' and ''VideoGame/UnrealTournament2004''.
** cbctf1 and oa_ctf4ish (Capture The Space) take inspiration from the ''VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena'' map q3ctf4.
** delta (Mission Over Mars) takes inspiration from the ''Quake III: Team Arena'' map mpteam6.
** pxlfan (The Big Fan of Death!) takes inspiration from the ''VideoGame/{{Unreal}}'' deathmatch map [=DmDeathFan=].
** oa_reptctf11 (Colliding In The Factory) takes inspiration from a third-party map for ''VideoGame/QuakeIIIArena'', reptctf11.
** oasago2 (Sago's Castle) takes inspiration from a third-party map for ''VideoGame/UnrealTournament2004'', CTF-TFC-Solemn. The same is true for am_spacecont and am_thornish, taking place in remake of other UT third-party maps, DM-1on1-Contact and CTF-Thorns*.
** One of the frag messages from the bots is [[VideoGame/Wolfenstein3D "<player> is death incarnate"]].
** The oa_dm* levels are the Quake 1 Deathmatch levels. These levels were GPL'd by Id for VideoGame/{{Quake}}'s [[MilestoneCelebration tenth anniversary]]. dm6ish (The Dark Zone) and ce1m7 (House of Cheethon) are also adaptations of dm6 and e1m7 from the original Quake.
** The hydronex* (Hydrocapture) maps are loose adaptations of VideoGame/UnrealTournament's [=CTF-Hydro16=].
* SinglePlayerGauntlet: The single player portion is a series of seven rungs or "Tiers", of four maps each, that must be cleared before the next tier is unlocked, similar to the original game. However, the tiers are designed in a more structured way: every tier has a common theme, all the tiers are comprised of two three-way matches, a five-way match and the 1-on-1 fourth map, and there's no introductory map.
%% (ZCE) * [[PaletteSwap Skin Swap]]: Plenty of examples.
* StatOverflow:
** The game has the Stimpack and Megahealth items. Stimpacks add +5 HP, Megahealth adds a degenerating +100 HP, and both items can overheal to a maximum of 200.
** Health degenerates to 100 HP if it's over this value. Players already start with an instantly-degenerating 125 HP, and the Regeneration powerup heals up to the 200 max at a rate of 5 HP per second; after the powerup expires, the excess of health starts degenerating.
* StrategicAssetCaptureMechanism:
** The Domination mode has two teams battling to control specific locations in the map, the indicators being marked with a white flag that turns into the color of the team that owns the area once a player touches it. Other than points, taking these points grant no extra beenfits.
** Double Domination follows the same principles as Domination, except that teams battle to take over two control points, A and B, located in separate areas of the map, for a set time, usually 10 seconds. A successful capture gives the owning team a point, restores the points to white flags, and both teams must re-gain control of these points. Rinse and repeat.
%% (ZCE) * {{Stripperiffic}}: Some of the females, such as Angelyss, Dark, Rai, Nekoyss, Tanisha.
* SuicideAttack: The Kamikaze item, when used.
** ThanatosGambit: The player can set this one by getting killed (but not gibbed) and letting some seconds to pass, after which, the skulls explodes and everyone in it's radio area is killed, or at least, hurted enough to get killed.
* TookALevelInBadass: Up to 0.7.7, Beret was a flamboyant boyscout. In 0.8.0 onwards, he was redesigned as a macho commando.
* UseItem: The Teleporter, Medkit, Kamikaze and Invulnerability items.
* WhyAmITicking: Hit an enemy with a Prox Mine, (or many, for amplified effect) and in [[YouAreAlreadyDead 10 seconds]], more or less, there's a high chance that he will blow into pieces.
----
!''[=OpenArena=] 3'' has examples of:
----
* AdjustableCensorship: Not only for violence, but also an option for partial nudity, switching certain characters to more modest variations.
* ArtEvolution: Most of the older material is going to be revamped, with a style going completely towards {{anime}}, rather than just being influenced by it.
* AnimationBump: Additional player animations are supported.
* FanServicePack: Some of the characters get this coming with the ArtShift.
* LensFlare: The sun now gets this.
* PointyEars: It might as well be called'' Jigokumimi Arena''.
* {{Retraux}}: To some degree. It's intended to look from the year 2000 for both stylistic and technical reasons; in particular, first-generation [=PS2=] games and other PC games of that year.
** There's an option to render the game as through a 3Dfx Voodoo video card, complete with texture limits, dithering, pixel filtering and scanlined gamma correction.
** There is also a Platform/PC98 postprocess shader that renders the game in 16 dithered colors.
* SnakePeople: Lamia
* ThisIsADrill: The saw gauntlet is replaced by a drill gauntlet as the melee weapon of the game.
