Context Trivia / TheInbetweeners

Go To

* ActorInspiredElement: Simon's character was made more eccentric in the second and third series after the creators noticed how deceptively strange his actor Joe Thomas was while filming the first.
* AdoredByTheNetwork: Reruns continue to be aired daily on E4 well over a decade after the series ended.
* {{Blooper}}: In the scene where Simon's car loses its original passenger door, the rear registration plate changes to a completely different number as the car reverses, which means that it's a completely different car.
* CaliforniaDoubling:
** Watersides shopping centre, featured in "Will's Dilemma", is actually The Chimes in Uxbridge.
** All of the harbour/river scenes in Swanage during "The Field Trip" are actually Littlehampton.
* TheCastShowoff: Blake Harrison gets to show off his impressive dance moves quite a few times across the series.
* CastTheExpert: Greg Davies actually was a secondary school teacher prior to his acting/comedy career taking off, and has since made plenty of public comments heavily implying (if not outright stating) that it was not a particularly happy or fulfilling career for him. On learning this fact, one cannot help but wonder whether the sheer vicious pleasure that Mr. Gilbert takes in being a massive prick to students he finds unbearable, combined with his general apathy at a life in the secondary education system, was Davies channelling some long pent-up frustrations...
* CastTheRunnerUp: James Buckley was originally cast as [[TheDitz Neil]]. His offscreen persona made such an impression with the show's creators that they rewrote the Jay character specifically with him in mind.
* CreatorBacklash:
** The original pilot episode, ''Baggy Trousers'', set during TheEighties, is so reviled by the creators that they've sworn it will never see the light of day.
** James Buckley was so ashamed of the "Frwends Reunited" ten year anniversary special that he apologised for it on Website/{{Twitter}}. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_64k-rBCtek He later stated]] that he didn't know what was going on because he felt that it was rushed and felt they were all struggling with the tone of the show (James and the other cast members thought it was about them going back to famous shooting locations, sharing jokes and backstories). According to James, they weren't prepared for the moment where they had to go inside a suitcase and their reactions were genuine when it came up.
* DawsonCasting: All four lead characters' actors were, at the youngest, 21 at the time of filming the first series. This means that, if they had left college/sixth form and gone straight to University, they would have graduated from that three years ago. This is one of the few positive examples of the trope, because all four of them [[OlderThanTheyLook sure don't look like they're in their mid-20's]].
** The best example: Susie, one of the "freaks" who joins the Sixth Form with Will, is said to be taking her A-levels four years early, making her either twelve or thirteen. The actress playing her was seventeen and actually would have been taking her A-levels.
** There's also Simon's brother in Series 3, [[SheIsAllGrownUp who has quite visibly aged.]]
** The age disparity increases with the [[Film/TheInbetweeners2 second film]] as the gap betweeen the release of the two films is three years, but InUniverse only a few months has passed. Making Simon Bird and Joe Thomas roughly a full decade older than their characters.
** One thing that may help with this is casting Greg Davies, who is 6'8, to play the main teacher in the series. It becomes harder to notice / remember that the actors are grown men playing fifteen and sixteen year olds when the main adult character in the series constantly ''looms'' over them. It helps that Simon Bird, who has more interactions with Gilbert than anyone else, is 5'5.
* EnforcedMethodActing: None of the actors who played the audience during the fashion show episode (including Simon's parents and Mr. Gilbert) were prepared for Simon's legendary WardrobeMalfunction. That's right, none of them knew that when Joe Thomas entered the stage, his left testicle would stick out from his clothing. So any laughing or shock from the audience's side is probably genuine.
* FollowTheLeader: The success of the first film kicked off a massive run of spin-off film adaptions of British TV shows, particularly comedies, within the subsequent decade.
* FriendshipOnTheSet: The four main actors became friends during the series and still are to this day.
* FunnyCharacterBoringActor: Zig-zagged with James Buckley. While he's often noted to be much more quiet and reserved than Jay, the crew of the show have attested (and the behind-the-scenes footage has corroborated) that he can be just as much of an amusingly annoying loudmouth when he's comfortable with the company he's with. Since Buckley's own quirks partly influenced how the Jay character was written, and Jay himself is shown to be quite awkward when around strangers, it can be argued that the line between the character and the actor is actually thinner than initial appearances would suggest.
* IAmNotSpock: While all four of the series' leads remain proud of the show and its legacy, they have each to varying degrees admitted to having problems separating themselves from their characters in the public consciousness. Joe Thomas in particular is quite candid about the minor existential crisis being eternally thought of as a teenager has caused him in the years since the series wrapped.
* LifeImitatesArt: Interesting fact: Simon Bird's [[RealLife real-life]] brother actually ''is'' the Head of Sixth Form at a school in Sussex.
* MissingTrailerScene: [[Film/TheInbetweenersMovie Neil getting a tattoo]] (from Christos Tolera) - which reads 'Gay Neil Maila'.
* RealLifeRelative: Creator/AnthonyHead, who plays Will's Dad, is the real-life father of Emily Head, who plays Carli.
* RealSongThemeTune:
** "Gone Up in Flames" by Morning Runner.
** "This Too Shall Pass" by OK Go for the American adaptation.
* RecycledScript:
** The motorbike scene at the start of Series 3 Episode 3 was originally written for the [[Film/TheInbetweenersMovie film]] but cut and repurposed for TV series.
** In the [[Film/TheInbetweeners2 second film]], dialogue in some scenes that were cut is reused in other scenes:
*** Neil's InfoDump about his irritable bowel syndrome originally took place in a scene on the group's flight to Australia.
*** In a voiceover during the Splash Planet sequence, Will mentions that Jay insisted that the water in the park was "80% vaginal fluid". Jay originally said this about the Lazy River ride in the same scene.
* ReferencedBy: In Lynx's 25th anniversary ad for Lynx Africa, Simon's car appears during the time warp sequence.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Simon (Joe Thomas) and Tara (Hannah Tointon)'s on screen relationship may have ended disastrously, but they are now together off screen.
* SleeperHit: While it was well-received by critics from the start, the show had only modest viewing figures throughout its first series. A combination of positive word of mouth and the rise of online streaming caused viewership to increase exponentially until it became a bonafide cultural phenomenon by its third series.
* TechnologyMarchesOn: Simon complains that his car has a tape deck. His mother reckons that's good until Simon replies, "You can't even buy tapes anymore!"
* VindicatedByReruns: The show didn't get particularly much viewership during the airing of its first series, but managed to secure a second after becoming ''the'' most watched show on E4's then-new online streaming portal. As of 2018, the series has been streamed for over 86 ''million'' hours on the Channel 4 streaming service.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/MattSmith auditioned for Will, but he was deemed too handsome and dashing for the part. Creator/DominicCooper also auditioned.
** The original pilot under the WorkingTitle of ''Baggy Trousers'' was set during TheEighties.
** Mark Donovan was originally going to have a larger role in the first film where he would follow the lads to Malia, but the writers couldn't fit it into the script so the idea was scrapped.
* WorkingTitle:
** The pilot episode was entitled ''Baggy Trousers''. Joe Thomas named the cast's 'band' on the radio after the final show's working title of ''1, 2, 3, 4''. This was most likely a reference to the song by Music/{{Feist}} of the same name, which was something of a {{Leitmotif}} during the first series and appears sporadically throughout the rest of the show. Another potential title was ''Dickheads''.
** ''Sex On The Beach'' for the first movie, which became its MarketBasedTitle in Germany.
