* AscendedFanon:
** That characters' names all beginning with a W was a coincidence, but after the first few, the devs ran with it.
** The trailers for Don't Starve Together shows Wilson and Willow, Wendy and Webber and Wigfrid and Wes acting as duos. They were already fan-favorite ships, and the same can be said about the Steam trading cards, some of which use the same pair-ups.
* CreatorsPest: The reason why Warbucks was removed. The dev team realized that his character design could cause some controversy and were not happy with his gimmicksHe gained sanity when he has money in his inventory, but lost sanity if he ate food that didn't come from a crock pot, and realized he wasn't that interesting after all. He was replaced by Wormwood, a living plant who as a concept is more unique.
* DummiedOut:
** Klei acknowledged that Warbucks, as controversial as he was, did have his fans, so they left his data in the game so that players could easily mod him back in if they so desired.
** Several unimplemented characters have been found in the game's files. Among them are a skeleton, a witch, and the Pyro from VideoGame/TeamFortress2. Many of the playable characters were only found in the game's files before they were implemented.
** There are also several unimplemented items, the most notable being the long pig from Don't Starve Together. Originally players would drop long pig (human flesh) when they die, but the developers thought that eating people was too dark. Naturally, there is a mod that re-enables it.
** There was originally a research points system for crafting. You put objects into the science machine where you gained "research points" from them, where you then spent them to unlock crafting recipes. It was replaced with the prototyping system in the "Insanity!" update. Interestingly, Wilson's dialogue when checking the science machine still loosely references the research points system.
* FlipFlopOfGod: Klei Entertainment initially said there would be no multiplayer. Then in May 2014, they announced Don't Starve Together, a multiplayer feature.
* RefittedForSequel: While not for sequels per se, several abandoned characters were later reimagined as new characters in the game's [=DLCs=]. For example, prototypes of Wigfrid, Wilbur and Wortox existed in the game files long before they became playable. The devs have mentioned that even Warbucks's gimmicks may be revisited down the line.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The Shipwrecked DLC was originally a standalone game, but after fans demanded it, it became DLC for the main game.
