''Dusk Maiden of Amnesia'' (aka ''Tasogare Otome x Amnesia'') is a [[GenreBusting comedy / tragedy / horror / supernatural / shounen / mystery / romance / ecchi]] manga by Creator/{{Maybe}} (and yes, that's the creator's [[OnlyOneName name]]). It was serialized in ''Monthly Gangan Joker'' from 2009 to 2013, and compiled into 10 volumes.

Yuuko Kanoe has been a ghost in the OldSchoolBuilding for a long time without being able to make contact with the living, until first-year junior high student Teiichi Niiya came along. Now they try to solve the mysterious circumstances under which Yuuko died, hindered by the fact there are at least ''[[TheSevenMysteries seven]]'' different ghost stories about the school, some of which are possibly based on distorted accounts of her death.

An [[AnimatedAdaptation anime adaptation]] by Creator/SilverLink aired in Spring 2012.

----
!!Examples:
* ACupAngst: On several occasions, Kirie gets jealous of Yuuko and Okonogi, both of whom are much bustier.
* AdaptationDistillation: The anime cuts out a number of elements, such as Okonogi being a year older and a member of the newspaper club.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Yuuko and Kirie have normal black hair in the manga while the anime gives them relatively dark/muted purplish and green-bluish hair respectively.
* AdaptationalHeroism: In the anime, [[spoiler:Yukariko did not betray her sister Yuuko and is never portrayed as being anything less than a kindly old lady who's always willing to help the Paranormal Investigations Club.]]
* AgeGapRomance: Yuuko died when she was 15, fifty-or-so years before the events of the series, while Teiichi is barely 13 by the end of the manga.
* TheAloner: For nearly 50 years, Yuuko has wandered the labyrinthine school where she died. Though she can still interact with physical objects, she's often completely unseen by other people; she can still try talking to them, but they only register her voice as coming from 'someone over there'. People who ''do'' catch glimpses of her are quickly frightened off by [[ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve the horrifying apparition they expect to see in a "haunted school"]], further alienating her from the world. It's a miracle she hasn't broken down after all that time... [[spoiler:though later chapters reveal that she's actually repressing her negative emotions like loneliness, which have manifested as a [[EnemyWithout second]], [[ShadowArchetype much darker ghost]].]]
* AndIMustScream: Yuuko's death. Left to die all alone in a cold, dark, scary basement-shrine, [[spoiler:and it was her sister who did it to her. But what really takes the cake is Shadow Yuuko. She's the negative emotion and bad memories that regular Yuuko doesn't want, and so expelled from herself. The end result is a being left tormented by her unjust death, constantly living everyday with those horrible memories. This is only made worse by the fact that she's well and truly alone -- even normal Yuuko can't see her, and when she does, tries to ignore and forcibly forget about her. Because of how she looks, most people run from her when they see her too. Also, being Yuuko's negative emotions, that means that she doesn't have any of the good feelings Yuuko gets. Shadow Yuuko constantly belabours the point that she has had no comfort in undeath at all.]]
* ArtShift: A few. Chapter 18 has a sudden one, while Chapter 21 has several panels containing little more than rough outlines. Whether these are due to a creator breakdown, deus ex machina, executive meddling or the [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Sendai_earthquake_and_tsunami 2011 Sendai Earthquake]] is unknown.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: [[spoiler:Subverted in both the manga and anime finales. Yuuko is supposed to finally pass on after coming to terms with her past and fusing with Shadow-Yuuko. However, her attachment to Teiichi makes her come back to stay with him.]]
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Played straight often, since we see Yuuko (and occasionally one of the other girls) at least partially nude every few chapters.
* BeliefMakesYouStupid: In the flashback arc Yuuko espouses this, scornfully criticizing the village elders and her sister for turning to old-fashioned superstitions out of desperation.
* BoyMeetsGhoul: Teiichi and Yuuko sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G...
* BreakTheCutie:
** Yuuko's past. [[spoiler:She was killed by other villagers and her own beloved sister by having her leg broken and thrown into a basement to slowly die.]]
** Yukariko also suffered from this event. [[spoiler:She sacrificed her sister because Yuuko was most important person to her and authentically believed that it was the only way to cure the plague. Problem was that it didn't. Everyone around her died and her father committed suicide over Yuuko's death. The cherry on top was seeing Yuuko's ghost and having it attack her. When it chose not to kill her, she took it to mean that Yuuko wanted her to suffer by living. For the rest of her life, she'd continue to be haunted by her sins since she only ever saw Yuuko's shadow, and never the other part of her.]]
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:Yuuko's younger sister Yukariko betrayed her and selected her to be the HumanSacrifice to stop a plague that had infected their village. Yuuko returned as an evil spirit to get her revenge on Yukariko, but in the end she couldn't bring herself to kill her sister.]]
* CaughtTheHeartOnHisSleeve: When Yuuko decides to walk out of Teiichi's life, this is his response.
* CerebusSyndrome: [[spoiler:Shadow Yuuko]] sucker-punches the manga's comedic slice-of-life nature with a tire-iron, especially [[spoiler: when Yuuko's true past is revealed.]]
* ChekhovsGunman: Akahito-san. [[spoiler: Turns out Akahito-san is the name of the person chosen to act as emissary of the mountain god Yuuko was sacrificed to appease.]]
* ChickMagnet: Teiichi, who has three different women pining after him.
* ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve: To most people, ghosts are only visible if they already believe there's going to be something there, and then they usually see some ghastly specter in line with their fears rather than the real ghost. [[spoiler: Also applies to those who can see a ghost already, as their perception of the ghost can be changed by making them believe the ghost truly looks different.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Momoe.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Yuuko really doesn't like it when other girls get close to Teiichi.
* ClothingSwitch: Teiichi and Kirie switch clothes in one of the extra chapters.
* CreepyBasement: The underground shrine has all the qualities of this, with a bonus corpse.
* CrossdressingVoices: Creator/JunkoMinagawa as Teiichi in the drama CD.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Yuuko died very slowly and painfully in a dark CreepyBasement, [[spoiler:sacrificed to the village god by superstitious adults (and her own beloved little sister) who broke her leg so she couldn't escape.]]
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Teiichi and Momoe (in the manga; the anime gives her green eyes).
* CuteGhostGirl: Yuuko is downright adorable. [[spoiler: Normal Yuuko that is. Shadow Yuuko not so much.]]
* DancingTheme: In an interesting subversion Yuuko does a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bon_dance Bon Dance]] in the opening.
* DeadpanSnarker: Kirie and Teiichi are both very sarcastic individuals, often directing this towards each other on account of the former being a tsundere towards the latter.
* DeathGlare: When Yuuko was [[spoiler:an onryo, she was constantly glaring due to her overwhelming hatred]].
* DyingDeclarationOfHate: Yuuko dies while swearing revenge on [[spoiler:Yukariko and the others who sacrificed her.]]
* EmotionlessGirl: Yuuko was one prior to meeting Teiichi, [[spoiler:as she had cast aside [[ThePowerOfHate the one emotion that kept her rooted in the world of the living]].]]
* EnemyWithout: [[spoiler:Shadow Yuuko is explicitly everything Yuuko's repressed and denied about herself, especially any hurtful memories, unconsciously separated from her to spare her the mental suffering.]]
* EvolvingCredits: At the end of Episode 7, as the closing song plays, Yuuko [[spoiler: is no longer visible performing the song. After the credits, there's a stinger revealing that Yuuko no longer remembers Teiichi.]]
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: [[spoiler:Kirishima Yuuko started out with long hair kept up in a bun, but after deciding to get revenge, she lets it down.]]
%%* {{Expy}}: Yuuko. Long hime cut? Red eyes? Acts either mysterious or mischievous? Likes making one specific boy really uncomfortable? Yeah, sounds a lot like [[Manga/XxxHolic a certain Witch of Dimensions.]]
* FanDisservice: As mentioned below, Corpse-Yuuko. Still in a towel.
* FreezeFrameBonus: The observant will see the screen flicker twice during the 1st trailer. [[spoiler: Pausing it reveals [[http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111222173818/tasogare-otome/images/8/8e/Shadow.png this horrifying image of shadow Yuuko]].]]
* FirstKiss: Yuuko and Teiichi have theirs in Chapter 23.
* FunbagAirbag: Teiichi accidentally falls face-first into Yuuko's breasts in the special "Shower Room of Fresh Blood" chapter. He gets a {{nosebleed}} from it.
* GenkiGirl: Momoe is a fountain of joy and energy.
* GenerationXerox: Kirie looks very similar to Yuuko and her grandma in their youth, and can even convincingly pass as them while wearing a long-haired wig (despite her lack of Yuuko's huge bust). [[spoiler:At one point, Kirie even speculates that her resemblance to Yuuko -- who crossed over into the afterlife -- is making Teiichi avoid her.]]
%%* GenreBusting: Horror + Romance + Mystery + Highschool comedy, to name a few.
* GhostAmnesia: The whole plot is built around this. [[spoiler:The shadow Yuuko is literally the spectral incarnation of Yuuko's cast-off memories.]]
* GhostlyGoals: None that Yuuko is aware of. [[spoiler:It's later revealed she came back to exact vengeance on the people who killed her, but couldn't go through with it and ended up splitting her negative emotions into Shadow Yuuko instead. Making peace with her shadow is eventually what lets Yuuko move on. She later [[LoopholeAbuse exploits]] this trope to stay with Teiichi in the world of the living until his time comes.]]
* GirlishPigtails: Sahara, Minato and Kirie in her childhood.
* GlamourFailure: In the chapter where Kirie first appears, she tries to convince Teiichi to stop seeing Yuuko as a beautiful ghost girl and recognize her as an evil spirit/monster intent on destroying him. Soon after, [[spoiler:Yuuko loses her regular appearance and appears as a rotting corpse for a while, until Teiichi renews his faith in her and she goes back to being beautiful, voluptuous ... oh, and naked]].
* TheGlassesComeOff: [[spoiler:Yuuko Kirishima originally wore glasses, but stopped wearing them once she decided to get revenge against her bullies and destroy the ghost stories of the school.]]
* GreenEyedMonster: Yuuko is rather upset with Niiya after he returns from summer vacation only to start hanging out with Momoe and Kirie.
* HimeCut: Yuuko keeps her hair long with even bangs and short sidelocks. [[spoiler: Fitting, as she was a YamatoNadeshiko when she was alive.]]
* HopelessSuitor: Both [[GenkiGirl Momoe]] and [[{{Tsundere}} Kirie]] have crushes on Teiichi, but the OfficialCouple is Teiichi and Yuuko. When Momoe realizes the two are an item, she admits defeat. After all, Teiichi is a member of the Paranormal Investigation Club. How could Momoe possibly compete with an actual ghost?
* HumanSacrifice: As the Seven Mysteries come together, Yuuko is revealed to have died this way. [[spoiler: Later chapters reveal she was murdered by ''her own sister'' to stop a plague the villages blamed on a sadistic mountain god and its emissary, Akahito-san.]]
* IAmAMonster: [[spoiler:After regaining her memories, Yuuko calls herself an onryō who was unable to fulfill her grudge.]]
* ImportantHaircut: [[spoiler: Yuuko Kirishima cuts her hair short after Yuuko Kanoe and Teiichi save her from becoming a sacrifice.]]
* ItAmusedMe: Yuuko's reasoning for waking Teiichi up in the middle of the night in Chapter 12.
* JacobMarleyApparel: Played with. Yuuko originally appears in the current school uniform; it's Keiichi who convinces her to change into the antique school uniform she wears for the rest of the series.
* JapaneseSchoolClub: Yuuko founds the Paranormal Investigation Club, consisting of herself (as the [[IncrediblyLamePun ghost president]]) and Teiichi. Momoe appears to be a semi-member, despite already being part of the Newspaper Club, and Kirie seems to reluctantly join the circle.
* {{Joshikousei}}: Two different varieties of them, in fact! The modern uniform the female students wear and Yuuko's old fashioned one both apply.
* KarmaHoudini: The bullies who [[spoiler:attempted to sacrifice Yuuko Kirishima get away nearly scott-free aside from having the living daylights scared out of them by the actual Yuuko-san.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Yuuko can apparently cast off any memories that cause her pain or distress. These coalesce into Shadow Yuuko, who, being forced to take on Yuuko's jealousy over Teichii, decides that this time she's going to take all of Yuuko's memories of Teichii from her as well - ''including'' the happy ones.]]
* LaserGuidedKarma: [[spoiler:Yuuko Kanoe was murdered by some superstitious villagers who believed a human sacrifice would stop a plague. They all subsequently died from that plague.]]
* LiteralSplitPersonality: It's revealed that Shadow Yuuko is the manifestation of Yuuko's negative emotions.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: Whether the mountain god exists or not.
** [[spoiler: It's not clear what was the cause of the plague 60 years ago. The village elders chalked it up to the god punishing everyone for not taking care of his shrine. However, the plague continued even after a sacrifice had been made, so it may have just been a normal unidentified plague.]]
** [[spoiler: After Yuuko tried to bargain with the same god for revenge, her wish was indeed granted when she returned as an onryō, but whether the god had a hand in this is never confirmed.]]
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Yuuko has been in the body of a 15 years old girl for 60 years, while Teiichi will eventually grow old and die. [[spoiler: The ending solves this by implying that the pair will still be together after death.]]
* MarshmallowHell: Teiichi frequently finds himself having his head buried in Yuuko's chest (which is of course initiated by Yuuko). Initially this is part of Yuuko teasing Teiichi, but as they grow closer it becomes more romantic (and somewhat heartwarming) in nature.
* MeaningfulName: The "Yuu" in "Yuuko" means "Dusk/Evening", and "ko" is a common suffix for girl's names -- hence the English title of "Dusk Maiden".
* MoodWhiplash: All over the place, as the story switches between fanservice and jokes to human sacrifice and evil spirits astoundingly fast.
* TheMourningAfter: [[spoiler: Teiichi adamantly refuses to get over Yuuko after she passes on, going so far as to try to bring her back by spreading the truth about her death and afterlife in the form of a new set of rumors, reasoning that because ''he'' was her final regret, she wasn't able to fully pass on. Kirie thinks he's gone insane, but it turns out he's correct, and Yuuko returns to be with Teiichi.]]
* MsFanservice: Yuuko is well built and frequently shown in a state of undress.
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: [[spoiler:Soon after Yuuko's death, Yukariko reopens the shrine and goes down to see her sister's body. She ends up crying and resting with her head in the dead Yuuko's lap. She's promptly attacked by her sister's vengeful ghost.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: When the magnitude and futility of Yuuko's death hits her, [[spoiler: her little sister Yukariko has a breakdown. This was because Yukariko had been the one who selected Yuuko as the sacrifice. Driven by guilt, she reopens the sealed shrine hoping Yuuko would still be alive, only to fall down the stairs and land face-first on her sister's corpse. The sight drives her to despair to the point that when Yuuko's vengeful ghost tries to kill her, Yukariko begs her to do it.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: [[spoiler:Yukariko considers her part in killing her sister a SenselessSacrifice.]]
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Yukariko [[spoiler: sacrificed her sister in hopes of stopping the plague. [[SenselessSacrifice It didn't work]].]]
* NonhumanLoverReveal: Teiichi doesn't realize Yuuko is a ghost when he first meets her, though he doesn't fall in love with her until later.
* {{Nosebleed}}: Teiichi has one [[spoiler:during an intimate moment in the school showers, creating a new school mystery.]]
* NotSoAboveItAll: Kirie usually does her best to present herself with the serious demeanor of an AloofAlly but many times over, that serious facade falls apart and it's revealed that she's just as scared as everybody else, she's just as sensitive about her appearance as most other girls are, or she's just as likely to fall victim to slapstick humor as much as anybody else.
* NotWhatItLooksLike: Momoe walks in on a situation where Yuuko has fallen on top of Teiichi (she'd put on his glasses for a joke, and they really screwed up her vision and balance) and ''then'' started getting flirtatious. Teiichi promptly yelps that "It's not what it looks like!" ...forgetting that the new girl can't see Yuuko, so it ''didn't'' look like anything naughty to her.
* OfficialCouple: Teiichi and Yuuko.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted and justified. Another character named ''Kirishima'' Yuuko eventually appears and the fact that Yuuko is a very common name in Japan is immediately brought up. Sadly, having the same name as the school's infamous Yuuko-san quickly gets some bullies the fodder they need to convince everyone that she has a connection to the ghost of the school and should be ignored at all costs. [[spoiler: This convinces her to take revenge on her tormentors and the ghost stories themselves by tormenting the former and destroying the latter.]] It backfires [[spoiler: when Kirishima's new ghost story ''Akahito-san'' convinces some girls that she should be sacrificed due to her supposed connection to Yuuko-san.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: Yuuko is old enough to be the grandma of most of the other characters, but due to being a ghost, she doesn't visually age, so she still looks and acts like a school girl.
* OldSchoolBuilding: The school has been modified a lot over its history, leaving parts that are abandoned and badly neglected. The main characters' clubroom is so decrepit, they are probably breaking every health and safety rule in the book in using it.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Teiichi, other than the fact that he can see Yuuko normally. Most people either can't see her at all, or see her as a terrifying specter.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: Apparently other than being invisible or having their appearance affected by those who do see them, ghosts aren't much different from humans in abilities. Ghosts aren't just visible to those who have the sight, they're tactile as well.
* OurNudityIsDifferent: Yuuko sees no reason for modesty in her ghost form, stripping out of one school uniform to put on another right in front of Teiichi, and not bothered at all when, despite having turned away, he gets a ''good'' look in a mirror. When Teiichi finds her actual corpse, fifty-some years dead, however, it's another story entirely -- she's utterly embarrassed, saying that her skeleton is as naked as a person can possibly get, begs him to cover the body, and calls him a pervert for not doing so immediately.
* ParanormalInvestigation: How the club functions. Most chapters in the manga that don't focus on character development involve a mystery of some sort.
* PleaseKillMeIfItSatisfiesYou: [[spoiler: When Yuuko's ghost tries to strangle Yukariko during their first encounter, the latter ''joyfully'' begs her to do it.]]
* ThePowerOfHate: Yuuko [[spoiler:came back the first time as a StringyHairedGhostGirl out of rage and hatred towards the people who killed her.]]
* ThePowerOfLove: Yuuko [[spoiler:comes back the second time as a CuteGhostGirl out of her love for Teiichi.]]
* PrayerOfMalice: As she's dying, [[spoiler:Yuuko offers one to the god she was sacrificed to, offering her life in exchange for the ability to wreak vengeance from beyond the grave. Her wish is granted when she comes back as an onryō.]]
* PsychoticSmirk:
** [[spoiler: Shadow Yuuko]] has this down to an artform, sporting a nightmarish grin -- often with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily.
** At the end of chapter 38, [[spoiler:Yukariko]] wears this alongside HiddenEyes [[spoiler:when she decides to sacrifice her sister]].
** [[spoiler:Yuuko died with this expression, having sworn to give herself up to hatred and kill everyone involved in her death.]]
* RaisedByGrandparents: Kirie was raised by her Grandma Yukariko, Yuuko's little sister.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Averted with Yuuko and Kirie, [[spoiler: but played straight with Shadow Yuuko.]]
* RunningGag: Every single school mystery involves Yuuko, most of them with her just doing mundane things.
* SenselessSacrifice: Yuuko was sacrificed to appease a malicious god the villagers believed was causing a devastating plague. Not only did it not work, it actually backfired horrifically.
* TheSevenMysteries: This school's seven mysteries are (albeit warped) stories based on parts of Yuuko's death, as well as some common Japanese urban legends.
** The Haunted Mirror: The location of Yuuko's body.
** Underground Demon: The underground shrine of the mountain god that Yuuko was sacrificed to.
** Spirited Away: The hillside where a gravestone to Yuuko hides.
** The Rock of Curses: A memorial to those who died in the plague that Yuuko was sacrificed to stop.
** Akahito: The person selected to act as emissary of the mountain god, who chose the victim of, and presided over, the sacrifice. [[spoiler: Eventually revealed to have been Yuuko's own sister Yukariko.]]
** The Inter-dimensional 13 Steps: A room filled with mementos of Yuuko from when she was alive, built by [[spoiler: the guilt consumed Yukariko]].
** Averted with the seventh mystery however, when it's later revealed by [[spoiler: Yukariko]] that there are actually only six mysteries, the rumour of seven of them just spread because [[RuleOfSeven seven sounds better]]. Played straight at the story's end though when Teiichi creates a new one, [[spoiler: Yuuko's Lover: Her relationship with him.]]
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Yuuko has no problem showing Teiichi her goods, in her ghost form at least. When he sees her skeleton, on the other hand... [[spoiler:The reason she has no modesty over her ghostly body is that all of her negative emotions have been dumped onto Shadow Yuuko.]]
* ShipTease: [[spoiler:Before they finally spit it out]], Yuuko and Teiichi have this a lot. There are also hints of Kirie/Momoe.
* ShootTheShaggyDogStory: Yukariko's flashback and [[spoiler:Shadow]] Yuuko's memories reveal that [[spoiler:Yuuko was sacrificed by her fellow villagers to a malicious god with her own sister acting as the god's priest, Akahito-san, in order to stop a plague ravaging the village. The sacrifice didn't work, and worse, Yuuko returned as a StringyHairedGhostGirl determined to kill those responsible for her murder.]]
* SlasherSmile:
** [[spoiler:Shadow Yuuko, combined with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily. A large part of ''why'' she's terrifying.]]
** In the memories of Yuuko's past, [[spoiler: Yukariko sports one when she starts ranting at her sister about having to perform the ritual to appease the mountain god, and a PsychoticSmirk when she decides to sacrifice her sister]].
* StaircaseTumble:
** Initially believed to be the cause of Yuuko's death, though something more sinister is revealed. [[spoiler:It's revealed she had her left leg smashed to the point where her bones were sticking through so she wouldn't be able to climb up, then was thrown down the stairs into the Mountain God's shrine.]]
** Under the influence of Shadow Yuuko, Yuuko shoves Teichi down the same stairs she died at the foot of.
* StepfordSmiler: To the others, Yuuko is extraordinarily upbeat and nonchalant about her own death. [[spoiler:She has a good reason for this - all her negative emotions have been piled onto Shadow Yuuko, leaving her with only the positives.]]
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: When she first hears of her, Kirie suspects Yuuko is one, though [[CuteGhostGirl she's actually far from it.]] [[spoiler: Chapter 40 reveals Yuuko really ''was'' a textbook example of an onryō all along, having been consumed by rage and hatred towards her village - and especially her sister - when she died. However, she couldn't bring herself to kill Yukariko, leaving her grudge unfulfilled, and eventually cast aside her negative emotions and memories, which manifested as Shadow Yuuko.]]
* SupportingHarem: Since the beginning, it's obvious Yuuko is the girl who will end up with Teiichi. Okonogi and Kirie never had a chance.
* TeensAreMonsters: Subverted: Yukariko does something truly monstrous but only because she's being manipulated by superstitious and hysterical adults. Unfortunately, by the time she finally comes to her senses it's far too late.
* TheTease: Yuuko know's Teiichi finds her attractive and enjoys teasing him about it.
* ThanksForTheMammary:
** In the first chapter, Teiichi doesn't quite believe Yuuko is a ghost, so he reaches out to grasp her shoulder, reasoning that a ghost will be insubstantial. That's just when she turns to face him, though, so he gets a handful of '''quite''' substantial breast. Yuuko is totally unfazed by this. She even jokes about it. ''"I suppose these tend to be quite the temptation."''
** It wouldn't be the last time, either. While convincing Momoe that he's banishing an evil spirit, Teiichi gets another handful of Yuuko's considerable endowments. He gets a full on [[MarshmallowHell faceful]] in a manga story when Yuuko insists on using the shower with him.
** [[spoiler: The first manages to be somewhat plot-relevant, as Teiichi brings back Yuuko's memories of him when he trips and accidentally gets another handful.]]
** Kirie, who is quite jealous of Yuuko's figure, gets a handful while unthinkingly stiff-arming Yuuko and is shocked to discover she has a tactile as well as visual presence, which makes her even more jealous of Yuuko's figure.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: In the flashback arc, Yuuko initially couldn't comprehend why she - who had been [[NiceGuy nice to everyone]] - was chosen for a superstitious sacrifice. On the brink of death, she utters this [[MadnessMantra over and over]] when she realizes [[spoiler:her sister was the one who had chosen her, and the hatred born of this betrayal is what turned her into an onryō]].
* ThroughHisStomach: In one of the early chapters, Yuuko is shown feeding Teiichi from a bento. On the next page, she pulls him down onto her LapPillow. He's a bit weirded out by this because Yuuko, although very good-looking and ''[[BuxomBeautyStandard built]]'', has been dead for something like fifty years.
* TrueSight: Though everyone can see ''something'' of Yuuko if they expect something to be there (often of the horrific sort, which changes how she looks to them), only Teiichi and Kirie can see Yuuko [[spoiler: and the second, cast-off version of Yuuko]] as they really are. [[spoiler: Strangely, Yuuko's sister can see Shadow Yuuko as well, but not the normal Yuuko, hinting at her guilty past.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: Kirie acts tough and aloof, but her inner soft side leaks out around Teichi.
%%* TwelveEpisodeAnime
* UncannyFamilyResemblance: Kirie is Yuuko's grandniece. A resemblance, particularly of the eyes, is hinted at as soon as Kirie shows up, but in Chapter 20, she gets put into a long-haired HimeCut wig ...and the resemblance just ''jumps'' right out -- except for her [[ACupAngst figure]] (and the CatGirl ears). It's even noted by Kirie's grandmother, Yukariko, who is Yuuko's younger sister.
* UndignifiedDeath: Yuuko's left leg was broken to the point where the bone was sticking through and then she was tossed down a staircase and left to starve in a cold, dark basement -- actually a subterranean shrine.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: There's so much between Teiichi and Yuuko it's not even funny. [[spoiler: They finally confess their feelings in chapter 23.]]
* WellIntentionedExtremist:
** [[spoiler: Yukariko]] honestly believed it was her family duty to sacrifice what she truly loved the most.
** Kirie wants to solve the seven mysteries not to help Yuuko but to get rid of her because she perceives her as a threat.
* WeirdnessCensor: Yuuko claims she's fully visible in a crowd because everyone else just assumes she's supposed to be there and has about 50 years worth of MeasuringDay sheets on file to prove it.
* WhamEpisode:
** Episode 7 of the anime brings together a number of plot points that the anime had been skipping over (curse rock, [[spoiler:shadow-Yuuko's identity]], Yuuko's breakdown etc) in one wham-packed episode.
** Chapter 37 reveals that Yuuko was killed by [[spoiler:her own sister]].
%%* TheXOfY
* YamatoNadeshiko: Prior to her death, Yuuko was a proper and dutiful young woman, though she scoffed at the superstitions of the elders. [[spoiler:The other villagers and her own beloved sister murdering her in spite of everything she'd done for them, on the basis of an old legend, was what prompted her DyingDeclarationOfHate and coming back as a spirit of vengeance.]]
* {{Yandere}}: One of the lesbians featured in chapter 10. Yuuko shows signs whenever Momoe gets too friendly with Teiichi, especially in Chapter 17, although this is partially due to [[spoiler:Shadow Yuuko's influence]].
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Most characters due to the art style.
** Teiichi is twelve years old.
** Momoe is actually older than him, but still barely looks her age at thirteen.
** Yuuko looks older than the fifteen years old she was when she died. [[spoiler:Perhaps justified as splitting all of her negativity into Dark Yuuko leaves Yuuko an idealized version of herself.]] As a decades-old ghost who doesn't age, she later [[OlderThanTheyLook inverts]] the trope.
* YourMindMakesItReal: Yuuko's aspect depends to a great extent on what one expects to see. Fear makes her more frightening and vice-versa. If you expect Shadow Yuuko then that's the version you'll get, and Niiya's perception of Yuuko temporarily becomes ghoulish in response to the doubts Kirie sews.
