A sub-trope of AnimeHair, this hairstyle resembles the hood scoops on a muscle car and also looks a bit like cat ears, allowing for the visual appeal of the CatGirl in series that are too "realistic" to actually feature such a supernatural creature. They can also be used to suggest [[MoeAnthropomorphism a resemblence to a machine]], again, without the work necessarily featuring something like a RobotGirl. Seems to be more common among females, though male examples are plentiful as well.

The trend started in the late 90s and continued in the early 2000s, most likely popularized by Sakura Kinomoto of ''Manga/CardCaptorSakura''.

Seems to be especially prevalent in {{Visual Novel}}s.

A close equivalent in RealLife is the ponytail fountain, a CyclicTrope in the West running on a roughly 20-30 year cycle. It was quite popular in The60s and, in television, is typically associated with younger, carefree women.

!!Examples:

[[foldercontrol]]

[[folder:Anime and Manga]]
* Shironeko from ''Anime/AkazukinChacha'', being a nonstandard take on a CatGirl, has these instead of cat ears.
* Kaede Kayano [[spoiler:a.k.a. Akari Yukimura]] from ''Manga/AssassinationClassroom'' sports these. [[spoiler:They serve to hide her own tentacles.]]
* Sakura of ''Manga/CardCaptorSakura'' and ''Manga/TsubasaReservoirChronicle'' also sports this hairstyle, combined with a HairAntennae.
* Celty Sturluson from [[Literature/{{Durarara}} Durarara!!]] is an interesting variation since she has no head. Instead, her helmet has prominent cat-like 'ears' where hair intakes would otherwise be [[spoiler:but actually subverted since her 'real' head doesn't have them]].
* Mutsuki Ichimonji from ''Manga/HappyLesson'' has these.
* Akari from ''Anime/JewelpetTwinkle'' has this hairstyle.
* Yukari in ''Anime/{{K}}'' has this.
* The titular character of ''Manga/{{Karin}}'' has such large intakes that they make up more than half of her total hair, a rarity.
** Her own sister, Anju, has intakes too
* ''Manga/MermaidMelodyPichiPichiPitch'': Lucia has these, combined with an IdiotHair.
* Ms. Smith from ''Manga/MonsterMusume'' has these (more noticeable in the manga).
* Haru from ''Manga/{{Ojojojo}}'' has small ones resembling horns. [[spoiler:[[HereditaryHairstyle Her and Tsurezure's child in the epilogue inherited them]].]]
* ''Manga/OmamoriHimari'''s TokenMiniMoe, Shizuku, has this hairstyle in its most magnificent form.
* Ada from ''Manga/PandoraHearts'' sports this hairstyle.
* Tsukiumi from ''Manga/{{Sekirei}}'' has this hairstyle.
* Aoi of [[IdolSinger Six Gravity]] (''Music/{{Tsukiuta}}'') has them. Apparently, they're supposed to resemble wings.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* Miyabi Hotaka from ''Literature/AbsoluteDuo'' has this hairstyle.
* Isuzu Sento from ''Literature/AmagiBrilliantPark'' has these, along with a HairAntennae.
* Fear from ''Literature/CubeXCursedXCurious'' has this hairstyle.
* Koneko from ''Literature/HighSchoolDxD'' has them, adding to her CatGirl motif. [[spoiler:She actually ''is'' a Nekomata, and sprouts actual cat ears in their place when using her full strength.]]
* Seara August from ''Literature/ICouldntBecomeAHeroSoIReluctantlyDecidedToGetAJob'' has them.
* In ''Literature/SundayWithoutGod'', Ai and her mother Alfa have this hairstyle. In Ai's case, she also has a HairAntennae.
* Violet of ''Literature/VioletEvergarden'' has this hairstyle, both during her ChildSoldier and post-war typewriter outfit.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Zoe Heriot of ''Series/DoctorWho'' usually wears her hair in a ponytail fountain, a common hairstyle in the 1960s which anticipated the style in anime.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* Playable Saber in ''VideoGame/FateExtra'' has them, ensuring that she can't be confused with [[VisualNovel/FateStayNight Blue Saber]] even if only her face is visible. (The rest of her is a dead giveaway due to her BuxomBeautyStandard figure and {{Stripperiffic}} outfit.)
* ''VideoGame/GenshinImpact'': Keqing and Dehya both sport this hairstyle, befitting their [[AnimalMotifs feline motifs]] (specifically a lioness[=/=][[OurManticoresAreSpinier manticore]] in Dehya's case). This sets them apart from legitimate {{Cat Girl}}s Diona and Lynette, as well as the [[BakenekoAndNekomata nekomata]] Kirara.
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsInTheSky'''s Estelle Bright sports a pair, along an IdiotHair.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Visual Novels]]
* Kyou and Ryou Fujibayashi of ''VisualNovel/{{CLANNAD}}'' both have these quite prominently. Kotomi Ichinose has a less impressive set.
* ''VisualNovel/DaCapoII'' has Yume and Otome Asakura.
** ''[[VisualNovel/DaCapo D.C.S.S.: Da Capo Second Season]]'' features Nanako Saitama.
* Continuing with the Creator/KeyVisualArts theme, ''VisualNovel/{{Kanon}}'' has three such characters, Kaori Misaka and Nayuki and Akiko Minase.
* Featured prominently in ''VisualNovel/MuvLuv''. Sumika Kagami has these, as well as Marimo and Meiya. Miki "Tama" Tamase has typical hair intakes along a rare hairstyle that includes even larger cat ears.
** Meiya's in particular are so massive her hair design was apparently inspired by the [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam0083StardustMemory Gundam GP02]].
* ''VisualNovel/ToHeart2'''s Tamaki Kousaka has these.
* Arcueid Brunestud from ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}'' has a rather impressive pair of intakes in the original release. Her design for the remake apparently reduces them to just one, which is almost vestigial.
* Aoko Aozaki from ''VisualNovel/WitchOnTheHolyNight'' and her earlier appearance in ''VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}}''.
* Monika, Yuri, and Natsuki from ''VisualNovel/DokiDokiLiteratureClub'' all have this. That's three quarters of the cast. Sayori's hair kind of tries too, but it's too messy to have such regular shapes. In the CG where she's hugging the PlayerCharacter, it actually looks a bit like this trope.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Senna has them in the August 18, 2012 strip (#11) of ''Webcomic/SandraOnTheRocks'' (just NSFW enough to not be linked).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* Parodied in [[https://yurucamp.tumblr.com/post/650839154338512896/very-important-psa this tumblr post]], which claims that an anime girl's "hair vents" are a vital organ for facilitating gas exchange to control body temperature, and without them, they will overheat and die.
* [[Characters/HololiveOuroKroniiCh Ouro Kronii]] of WebAnimation/{{Hololive}} has bangs that form this shape in her default appearance, forming a bob-cut look, but she seems to lose them when wearing her kimono. [=AZKi=] also has these in her fourth costume.
