[[folder: The Heroes]]

!!Rikus the Mul
One of the main heroes, Rikus is a Mul (Half-Dwarf) gladiator, and probably one of the strongest warriors of Athas. Thanks to his lover Sadira he's hired by the Veiled Alliance and help them against the evil Sorcerer King Kalak. He later fights against the armies of Urik and ends up owning the Scourge of Rkard, the only weapon capable of hurting the Dragon and the Sorcerer Kings. [[spoiler: He eventually slays Borys by breaking the sword in his head.]]
----

* BadassBoast: In his debut, when the chief of the guards tries to taunt him, Rikus nonechalantely tells him that he could kill him and his henchmen in the times it takes for him to scratch himself. Said bullies are taken aback.
* CoolSword: The Scourge of Rkard becomes his main weapon over the course of the books, given its awesome powers.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Despite being with Sadira, he doesn't take well to Neeva being with Caelum at all.
* DemonicPossession: Often in the second book when he's attacked by psionics who try to take over his mind, and also [[spoiler: when he's possessed by Tamar the wraith]].
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: He speared Kalak, killed the Shadow Leader Umbra, and finished off Borys.]]
* DumbMuscle: While no means stupid, Rikus is less educated and practical than the other heroes.
* FamedInUniverse: Rikus was the greatest gladiator in Tyr's history by the start of the story.
* GeneralFailure: As his campaign against the Urik proceed he starts to lose men and charisma as he fights.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Part man, part dwarf. He combines the physical prowess and lack of hair of a Dwarf with the slender body of a human.
* ISurrenderSuckers: Uses this tactic against Maetan in the second book. It is almost foiled by Maetan's psychic attack on his person, though Rikus is able to turn it around. Note that Athas has no system to determine fake surrenders as war crimes or even dishonorable.
* LightningBruiser: In his first appearance he states nonchalantly that he could kill four armed guards in the time he took to scratch himself.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler: When he realises that there was no mole in his army, and that his failures were his own doing.]]
* MultiMeleeMaster: As expected from a gladiator, Rikul can handle a massive arsenal of weapons, from swords, to spears, to axes and flails.
* RedRightHand: [[spoiler: When Tamar possesses him there's a ruby embedded in his chest and the skin around it is rotting.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: In book two, he takes the opportunity to exact revenge against Maethan, the nobleman who once enslaved him and was cruel to him. All of this in spite of his position as general of the army.
* WhatTheHellHero: His mismanagement of the army and (to his men) incomprehensible behavior leads to Neeva and other of his men to frequently give him a piece of their mind.

!!Neeva
Rikus' partner in both battle and romance for a while, she's a strong warrior and fights alongside Rikus and his friends. She eventually marries Caelum and has a child, Rkard.
----

* ActionGirl: She's one of the strongest fighters of the series.
* AmazonianBeauty: She's as beautiful as she's muscular and powerful-looking.
* BadassNormal: She's the only one in the main group who relies only on her skills, except in the last book when Sadira enchants her axe.
* ChainmailBikini: Partially justified, as there's not too much metal on Athas, and is a really hot place anyway.
* DamselInDistress: In the climax of the third book, she's giving birth to her son while the Dragon is attacking her village.
* FieryRedhead: The green-eyed variety. Her red hair goes along fine with her warrior spirit and prowess.
* HappilyMarried: After a long love story with Rikus, she ultimately ends up with Caelum and bears his child.
* MamaBear: If you value your limbs, you shouldn't harm her son.
* MsFanservice: That's her on the cover of book 5. This was also her role in the artwork of the original tabletop game.
* MaybeEverAfter: [[spoiler: Whether Neeva and Rikus end up getting back together at the end.]]
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: [[spoiler: In the last book she manages to whale on Tithian despite being half blinded and weakened for the struggle against Borys.]]

!!Sadira
A charming half-elf slave who attends Rikus, is quickly revealed to be a sorceress and member of the Veiled Alliance, who plots against Kalak. After his defeat, she actively looks for a way to stop the Dragon, and manages to obtain the power of the Tower of Primords. She's in love with both Agis and Rikus, and eventually marries them both.
----

* ActionGirl: Not as strong as Neeva, but indeed she can handle hard situations.
* DarkIsNotEvil: After obtaining the power of the Tower, her skin turns jet black, her eyes and lips cerulean, and her breath is black. However, she's still the same Sadira.
* EthicalSlut: Despite being one of the most virtuous characters, she can't commit herself to one man and even opts to legally take as husbands both Rikus and Agis, a decision that doesn't sit well with the former.
* FemmeFatale: She often acts like a vamp if the situation requires it, as seen when she suddenly flirts with a very flustered mole to divert the attention of the local templars.
* HotWitch: She's both one of the strongest spellcasters of the series and one of the most attractive women.
* IHateYouVampireDad: She really hates Faenaeyon's guts for abandoning her to her fate, not that [[{{Jerkass}} we can blame her for that]], given how much of a scum Faenaeyon's considered even among his peers.
* IdiotBall: Especially after book one, where some of her selfish actions come back to bite her curvaceous ass.
* MsFanservice: She's consistently described as one of the most attractive women in Tyr, and book 3's cover shows us what she looks like.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Her newfound powers allow her to drain the energy from the sun, making her extremely powerful during the day.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She becomes one of the two head councilmen of Tyr after the end of the story.
* SuperStrength: As long as there's sunlight, she's abnormally powerful.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: For her cause she ends up [[spoiler: causing Nok's death and the defilement of the gardens of Nibenay]].

!!Agis of Asticles
A noble senator from Tyr, and a master of the psionic "Way". A really wise and kind noble who joins the fray against Kalak. He has a complicated friendship with Tithian, and eventually ends up chasing him when he escapes from the capital and looks for the Black Lens. [[spoiler: Eventually Tithian uses the power of the Obsidian Lens to kill Agis.]]
----

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Tithian sees him as this, which is the source of his envy.
* CoolSword: A saber made of steel, a truly rare weapon in this setting.
* CulturedBadass: He's a competent swordsman, a master psychic and a wise man who read many books and is an excellent diplomat.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: He highly values nature and animals. Even giant spiders, if they're not hostile.
* TheHero: Highly charismatic and capable of holding the group together, especially in the first book when they act all together.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: Near the very end of book 4, Tithian overwhelms him with the Black Lens and murders him.]]
* MoralityChain: To Tithian. [[spoiler: Subverted in book 4 when we find out that Tithian always viewed Agis as a disposable man for his plans of ultimate power.]]
* NiceToTheWaiter: Deconstructed in his relationship with his slaves: even if he's genuinely kind to them and will do anything in his power to keep them happy and healthy, he won't give them freedom because he's afraid that they won't get such treatment on their own, making him blind to the fact that all they really wish is freedom indeed.
* OddFriendship: With Tithian, an ambitious and vile man, since childhood, but basically one-sided. Also with the Giant Phylo, a giant considered an outcast by his own kind and pretty much forced to follow Tithian's orders.
* PetTheDog: He's extremely kind to his slaves.
* PsychicPowers: He's a master of the Way.
* TheRival: To Tithian, in the ways of politics and psychics, and to Rikus, as both the leader of the party and rival for Sadira's affections.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: One of the most illustrious and politically active nobles of Tyr, and a participant in Kalak's assassination.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: He prefers diplomacy over battle, which allows him to befriend Phylo, previously on Tithian's payroll.

!!Tithian of Mericles
A power-hungry templar serving Kalak, he's a "friend" of Agis. He agrees to help the group against Kalak just for his personal gain. He becomes King of Tyr under the strict control of Agis and the council, but has more ambition. He eventually decides to seek the power of a Sorcerer King, hence, he decides to ally himself [[spoiler: with the Dragon and later Rajaat. He manages to reclaim the Obsidian Lens and use it to kill Agis]].
----

* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Thanks to Rkard's spell on the Lens, Tithian is left imprisoned forever in an alternate dimension with no way out, only able to cause downpours in the outer world. Nobody feels the need to let him out.]]
* BigBadWannabe: He's really power-hungry even when he becomes the de-facto ruler of Tyr and tries to reach the next step in hierarchy. He's not got the strength of will or magical potential to be a true threat, though.
* CreepyCrossdresser: It's implied that he used magic/the way to disguise himself as his own mother in order to [[spoiler: kill his brother.]]
* DirtyCoward: On his own, Tithian is vile, cowardly and pathetic, which is why he needs people to manipulate.
* EvilRedhead: He's consistently described with dark red hair and is one of the most despicable villains.
* EvilSorcerer: He eventually adds sorcery to his arsenal, doing nothing to improve his morals.
* ImAHumanitarian: In the last book it's implied that he [[spoiler:fed on corpses.]]
* LeanAndMean: He's morally bankrupt and consistently described as very thin. After being on the run for a long time, he becomes downright gaunt.
* ManipulativeBastard: Best seen when he escapes Tyr and there's noone of the good guys watching over him: as far as he's concerned, everyone's fair game, either to do stuff for him or to be exploited.
* PsychicPowers: He too is trained in the Way, but not as strong as Agis. [[spoiler: Then he gets the Obsidian Lens and his powers skyrocket.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: When the party forms at the end of the first book, he's the only one who's in for personal gain and ambition. The rest of the group keeps him under control until he betrays Tyr to side with the Dragon.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Near the end of the last book, he can turn his body in a more animal-like form to move around with the Lens.

!!Caelum
A dwarf from Kemalok and a priest of the Sun. Met by Rikus during the war against Urik, ends up following them and falls in love with Neeva, who eventually marries. [[spoiler: In the last book he's destroyed by Borys' mind attack.]]
----

* CombatMedic: He fought wars, can kick ass and can mend wounds after he's done.
* GeniusBruiser: The Dwarf part of his being put in the bruiser, the Cleric side add the genius.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler: During the fight against Borys, the latter unleashes a focused psychic attack strong enough to undone the poor dwarf.]]
* HolyHandGrenade: He can cast a brilliant field (centered on a miniature sun) which burns any undead coming too close. It does wonders against the Dragon's Spirit Lords.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: A plot point, he starts to believe he's getting useless in the last book, given the presence of Sadira and Rikus, but gets better when he realizes how he can still be of use with his clerical powers.
* TheMole: Rikus believes that he was actually helping the uriks. [[spoiler: Subverted.]]
* NoBodyLeftBehind: Borys' mind strike hits him ''hard''.
* ThePowerOfTheSun[=/=]PlayingWithFire: He's a priest of the Sun, specialized in fire magic and holy spells taking the form of flames.

!!Magnus
Sadira's cousin, he's an elf who was severely mutated by the magic of the Tower of Primords. Despite his reptilian looks, he's a powerful warrior and a Windsinger, capable of manipulating the wind with his voice.
----

* BlowYouAway: With his voice he can conjure whirlwinds, storms and tornadoes.
* CarryABigStick: Armed with a club, in case his muscles weren't enough.
* CurbStompCushion: His unseen battle against a Giant ends with him running away, chased by a giant who's now sporting several slashing wounds and other injuries all over his body.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler: Killed by the Dragon]] while he's kidnapping Rkard.
* GentleGiant: Despite his fearsome look he's one of the nicest guys around.
* TheGrotesque: As a result of the wild magic, he should be an Elf but looks like a bulky, muscular lizard-man with gray scales.

!!Rkard
Neeva and Caelum's son, is a young Mul and Priest of the Sun. He's believed to be the one destined to kill the Dragon, [[spoiler: but is actually a treachery planned by Tithian. He's however vital to the defeat of Rajaat.]]
----

* TheChosenOne: Cruelly subverted, Tithian claims that he's destined to slay the Dragon and unfortunately both good and bad guys believe it.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: He's the one who manages to imprison Rajaat with his spell.]]
* DistressedDude: He's kidnapped by Borys.
* TheLoad: Justified, he's essentially a level 1 Cleric pushed in an epic-level adventure where his friends are all around level 20.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: Like father, like son, his spells are centered around the sun, the flames and the cleansing light.

An exotic beast captured by Tithian in order to use it in the gladiatorial games. Looks like a huge bug who can devour minds and communicate with telepathy.
----

* BigCreepyCrawlies: Looks like a huge orange roach.
* BullyingADragon: When fighting in the arena, he threatens to alarm Kalak about his impending assassination plot if Rikul doesn't surrender. It doesn't end well for the bug.
* ChekhovsGunman: Apparently just a big ugly beast, it turns out to be really important to the plot.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Eventually Rikus kills it with the Heartwood spear.
* KillerRabbit: At first it doesn't look impressive (compared to the other monsters faced by Rikus at least)... then it touches you with its tentacles....
* {{Telepathy}}: Can communicate with people.
* UngratefulBastard: Rikus and Neeva were about to free it, and it answers by killing one of their friends. Turns out the Gaj is quite a pragmatic bastard.

----

* DirtyCoward: While the other Champions fought impressive races such as Dwarves, Elves, Ogres and Trolls, they choose Kobolds and Pixies as their opponents. They were also among the little few Champions who didn't rebel.
* FatAndSkinny: Sacha is the fat one, while Wyan is the skinny. They're almost always together, though they don't have much of a choice.
* ImAHumanitarian: They both feed on blood and flesh.
* KickTheDog: In book 4 Wyan threatens to rip Phylo's throat off if Agis doesn't give in the bag with the Obsidian Oracle inside.

* SmugSnake: Both are slimy and unpleasant to allies and enemies alike.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: To Tithian, in the ways of pshycic powers and magic. They do their best to be as aggravating and unhelpful as they can.

* KilledOffForReal: She tries to attack the Shadow People but falls in a weed covered pool and is dragged underwater by the plants.

* BodyHorror: As if being half centipede wasn't enough, he has large, bulging eyes, tiny ears and a large bone pone plate instead of his teeth.
* CreepyCentipedes: From the knees down he's a gigantic, black centipede.
* TheDragon: To Nibenay, his own father. Justified since Nibenay himself never leaves his abode.
* GeniusBruiser: A powerful sorcerer, and is also {{Nigh Invulnerab|ility}}le to boot, making him a deadly threat for Sadira.
* TheHeavy: He becomes the enduring main threat for most of book 3, hounding Sadira across the city and beyond.
* ImplacableMan: During the course of the book Sadira tries several tricks to get rid of him, including her most powerful spell (a destructive cloud of acid capable of wiping out a small army) right in his nostril. It did delayed him, but it only managed to destroy his nose for good.
* KnightOfCerebus: Whenever he shows up, Sadira suddenly finds herself outmatched and forced to run.
* NobleDemon: Has standards he won't violate, which makes him outraged when Sadira [[spoiler: defiles the gardens to cast magic]].

* WhatTheHellHero: Chews Sadira out for [[spoiler: defiling the Gardens of Nibenay]].
* TheWorfEffect: New Sadira destroys him without much pain.

!!Khirdar

* GentleGiant: Surprisingly enough, Fylo is a good soul at heart and a loyal friend.
* TheGrotesque: Unlike the humanoid Joorsh, Fylo is deformed-looking and uglier than most.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Attacks several Joorsh Giants alone in an attempt to distort their attention from Agis and dies in combat.]]
* OurGiantsAreBigger: He's large enough to be a Joorsh, but his disfigured, grotesque visage indicates he could be something else.

!!Kester
A female tarek pirate and owner of the Dark Viper. She's hired by Agis to capture Tithian.
----

* ActionGirl: Being the captain of the Dark Viper, she's a force to be reckoned with in combat, especially due to her race, reknowed for physical might.
* MultiBoobage: Sports four boobs. Less appealing example than usual, considering that Tarek look like bulky humanoid bats.
* PirateGirl: She leads a gang of mercenary pirates and can be quite ruthless.
* PunchClockHero: Hired by Agis to help him in his quest, she's only in for wealth alone.
