[[caption-width-right:250:The To-Be Main Character of her own game (title pending)]]

The intended heroine of Nippon Ichi's next game following ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', Asagi's game was dropped after Zetta defeated her and she has become a vagrant in all Creator/NipponIchi games since, wandering from game to game in the attempt of plugging her own disowned game or trying to commit hostile takeovers to put herself in the main character spot.

After being shunned ([[RuleOfFunny usually on purpose]]) for years, Asagi stars in her own mobile game, ''Makai Wars'' (which is not {{Uncancelled}}, it simply bears the name), released for smartphones in 2018.
----
* AdaptationalWimp: {{Downplayed}}. In ''Disgaea 6'', Asagi comes off as meek and somewhat cowardly in contrast to her usual hammy and bombastic attitude. This doesn't stop her from kicking all sorts of ass in the game proper.
* AlliterativeName: Her full name, as shown in both ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero'' and its sequel, is Asagi Asagiri.
* TheApprentice: [[spoiler:Valvatorez makes her his "Prinny Instructor-In-Training" after defeating her in ''Disgaea 4''.]]
* ArchEnemy: [[VideoGame/MakaiKingdom Zetta]] to Asagi and for good reason -- It's his fault she's stuck as the wandering protagonist to begin with. When they finally meet again in the Netherbattle Tournament, she gives him an ear-full.
* ArtEvolution: Subverted and lampshaded in the fourth game, in which she's the only character to retain her old sprite, making her look laughably out of date compared to the rest of the cast. She apparently "missed the memo." You ''can'' give her a high def sprite through DLC, but still.
-->'''Asagi:''' I don't think it's right to discriminate based on appearances. I'm just a little lower resolution, that's all!
* BadassAdorable: No matter how many times she fails to become the main character, she [[{{Determinator}} just won't give up]]. Gameplay-wise, she can also be really strong, too.
* BadassNormal: [[spoiler:Disgaea 5's version is respected by Overlords for her immense skill with firearms. Her "Main Character R" Evility even gives her a 50% ATK boost when fighting Overlords.]]
* BreakTheCutie: Asagi seems to be getting increasingly insane with each game she shows up in that isn't hers.
* CharacterDevelopment: By the end of ''[[VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero Asagi Wars]]'', [[spoiler:while she realizes that she failed to become the main character, she cherishes her friendship with Flonne and saves the Netherworld by [[HeroicSacrifice launching herself into the incoming battleship Yoshitsuna]], and by doing so gets her body back]]. [[AesopAmnesia She is back to her old self in the sequential NIS games.]] [[spoiler:Though Disgaea 5 reveals that there are in fact ''hundreds'' of Asagi clones and the real one happens to be more cool-headed and sane. It's possible that many of the Asagis encountered in earlier games are actually clones, with the one in 5 being the real one.]]
* ADayInTheLimelight: The alternate mode in the sequel to ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero'' in which you play as her in her Prinny form. Until the release of the ''Makai Wars'' smartphone game, this is the closest she has come to being the main character.
* DemotedToExtra: One of the most tragically hilarious cases ever.
* {{Determinator}}: She's tried ''how'' many times to get her own game already? And she shows no sign of slowing down.
* DiedStandingUp: [[spoiler:In ''VideoGame/PrinnyCanIReallyBeTheHero'', after her final defeat. She was so determined to become the main character that she just refused to yield! In the words of the Hero Prinny: "That's dedication, dood!"]]
* DontYouDarePityMe: In ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4| A Promise Unforgotten}}'', [[spoiler:Valvatorez actually ''offers her the position of main character'' because she's just so pathetic. Asagi refuses his offer for this reason and insists on fighting him for the role of main character.]]
-->'''Asagi:''' I don't need your pity! Ahh, come on, knock it off! Stop looking at me with those pitiful pitying eyes!
* EarlyBirdCameo: A DeconstructiveParody of this is her basic schtick in a nutshell.
* EpicFlail: She's most commonly portrayed with a pair of handguns, but she's been known to supplement her arsenal with a bazooka and a flail whose head is as big as she is. The other two weapons originated from ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', the game in which she made her debut.
* GunsAkimbo: Her HD form in ''Disgaea 4'' and ''Disgaea 5'' incarnations even has this as part of her class, with an Evility that lets her execute one additional normal attack when a gun is equipped.
* HostileShowTakeover: She figures if she can beat the main characters of the various games, she'll prove herself worthy of being a main character. Unfortunately, the inverse also holds -- if she's gotten beaten seven times by a ''Prinny''...
** While she drops trying to become the main character in ''Disgaea D2'', she is still trying to play the trope straight by trying to hijack Lanzarote's concert -- though she arrives on the scene late. She also plans on offing Laharl so that she can become the Overlord.
** Completely averted with ''Disgaea 5''. She is accepted into the main party willingly without a fight (though she and the party have to defeat her clones first).
* IdolSinger: What she becomes [[spoiler:at the end of ''Prinny 2'']]. She claims she is one in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2'', but it turns out she didn't even debut or even audition and was planning to hijack the concert of the current IdolSinger, Lanzarote. Idol is also one of the personality options for her clones in ''5''.
* ImageSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGrCiyFquRQ Received one]] in ''The Guided Fate Paradox'', performed by [[Franchise/LoveLive Kotori Minami]].
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: Pretty much all of her attempted takeovers paint her as this. She even breaks down crying in the third and fourth game.
* MoreDakka: Her combat style in ''Disgaea 5''. One of her evilities gives her a second attack, another lets her attack repeatedly during combo attacks, and her combo skill with Seraphina has both girls literally shower the enemy in bullets.
* MythologyGag: In ''Disgaea 5'', the only reference the game has to her old RunningGag is her Unique Evility "Main Character R", and a line on the Nether News stating that an interview about her being the true protagonist of the game was cut before it could be broadcasted. She otherwise drops her RunningGag.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Happens to her in Disgaea 4. That game uses HD sprites by default, but Asagi doesn't have one, and looks decidedly odd next to the other characters. An HD Asagi is free DLC, however.
** Also in Disgaea 2, where she retained her original sprite from ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', causing her to look distinctly chibi-ish compared to everyone else in the game. Both cases are [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded to hell and back]].
* OnlySaneMan: With ''Disgaea 5'' dropping her RunningGag, she ends up becoming this to the wackier members of the party.
* TheOtherDarrin: {{Lampshaded}} InUniverse in ''Prinny 2'', mentioning that she can't keep a consistent voice actress or character. Considering the number of voice actresses who have provided her voices (especially in Japan), it's hard not to draw attention to it.
* PrettyInMink: Her fur-trimmed jacket in some of the games.
* RecurringExtra: Emphasis on ''Extra''.
* RunningGag: Two of them.
** Always attempts a HostileShowTakeover in a bid to become the main character. ''Disgaea 5'' dropped this, however.
** Asagi has a new voice actress in every single game she appears in. This is usually not done in the English dubs, possibly for simplicity's sake.
* ScrewDestiny: In ''The Guided Fate Paradox'', she attempts this to get her own game. How? Pick a fight with God, of course!
* SelfDuplication: Her appearances in ''VideoGame/ClaDun'' and Disgaea 4 (as HD Asagi) make it clear there are multiple Asagis running around...somehow. In Disgaea 5, [[spoiler:Asagi also has a character class seen on her recruitment map]].
* SplitPersonality: Hinted at in her various appearances, but manifests itself most obviously in Prinny PSP.
* TearsOfJoy: When recruited in ''Disgaea 4'' as a Prinny Instructor-In-Training. The dialogue box mentions it explicitly:
--> Asagi has joined the party while crying in a fit of joy!
* ThrowTheDogABone:
** The ending to Asagi Wars in Prinny 2. [[spoiler:She is reincarnated for her HeroicSacrifice as a Prinny and becomes the biggest idol in the Netherworld.]]
** The success of Asagi's fan club promotion, leading Nippon Ichi to announce that her game is in the planning stages.
** Happens in ''Disgaea 4'' too. The party tries to convince her that she can be happy without being the main character, and Valvatorez [[spoiler:makes her his Prinny Instructor-In-Training]].
** ''Disgaea 5'' marks the first time Asagi isn't treated like a ButtMonkey and drops her HostileShowTakeover schtick. [[spoiler:Asagi comes in and finishes off one of her remaining clones and presents herself as rather cool-headed and cordial. She then joins the party without a fight.]]
** As of the NIS 25th Anniversary stream, NIS announced the upcoming release of Makai Wars on mobile devices, starring Asagi. She's finally getting what she's always wanted.
* TookALevelInJerkass: She was a fairly cordial individual in her earlier appearances, even when she began her HostileShowTakeover routine. A string of humiliating failures and defeats later, she's become far more irritable and arrogant... [[SanitySlippage and just a little unhinged.]] [[spoiler:That being said, ''Disagaea 5'' shows a lot of Asagi clones with exaggerated different personalities from earlier titles, while the real one was more serious and stable. This suggests that the previous Asagis from the different games were clones, and the Asagi appearing in Disgaea 5 is the real one's first appearance.]]
* YankTheDogsChain: After she gets [[ThrowTheDogABone thrown a bone]] in ''Disgaea 4'', Valvatorez says he will still need to make her pay for the trouble she has caused... by engraving the deepest traumas onto her soul.
-->'''Asagi:''' Awww...!

[[folder:Baal]]
!!'''Baal'''
[[quoteright:295:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/baal_d4.png]]

''The'' Bonus Boss, Baal first appeared as a Demon ''Lord'' in ''VideoGame/LaPucelle''. He TookALevelInBadass in ''Disgaea 1'' where he became known as Supreme Overlord (or "Tyrant") and was the one who was ultimately [[spoiler:responsible for King Krichevskoy's death; it was propaganda that blamed "black pretzels"]]. In this game, he became a Prinny after his first defeat; it was assumed at the time that this was a reincarnation. Baal appears again in ''VideoGame/PhantomBrave'', this time taking the form of a Mushroom-esque monster, an Eringer/Funguy. It was assumed at the time that he had gone through his reincarnation period as a Prinny, yet retained his incredible strength. More of his true nature became known in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'': Baal does not die when his body is killed; rather, he merely finds other host bodies to inhabit, and he is as old as the universe itself... This became ''worse'' in ''Disgaea 2'' when he started getting more than one body. In ''Disgaea 3'', Baal has more of a storyline; he is stealing traits from various characters for some unfathomable reason. Expect lots and lots of LevelGrinding to be anywhere near capable of fighting Baal; his HP tends to be in the millions.

Notably, Baal was absent from ''VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject''; in fact, [[{{Superboss}} Valv]][[VideoGame/MakaiKingdom oga's]] description states that he [[DidYouJustScamCthulhu conned Baal out of the]] position. Nevertheless, Baal's made his appearance as a Superboss in ''Prinny 2'' and returns as a DLC Bonus Boss in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4| A Promise Unforgotten}}'', ''[[VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2 Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness]]'', ''VideoGame/Disgaea5AllianceOfVengeance'', ''[[VideoGame/Disgaea6DefianceOfDestiny Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny]]'', and ''VideoGame/Disgaea7VowOfTheVirtueless''.
----
* AmbidextrousSprite: Applies to all of the games' sprites of course, but is especially noticeable on Baal, whose cape constantly switches the fist it's covering with as much as a tilt of the camera.
* ArchEnemy: To [[VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness Laharl]]. While many Nippon Ichi main characters have faced Baal, Laharl is the only one who has a personal vendetta against Baal, particularly [[YouKilledMyFather being the cause of his father's death.]] Some of Laharl's cameos reference this, seeking out Baal personally in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'' and ''VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice'' and Etna telling Sicily about Laharl having defeated Baal before when he returns in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2''. Coincidentally, Laharl cameos in most of the games Baal appears in[[note]]Until [[VideoGame/LaPucelle La Pucelle Ragnarok]], which added him, Etna, and Flonne, ''La Pucelle'' was the only game that did not have Laharl and Baal in the same game[[/note]].
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: in ''Disgaea 5'', Baal has a Netherworld Effect represented by a giant Baal that towers over the arena.
** In Disgaea 7, he can also use Jumbify. As expected with Baal's insane difficulty, his Jumbility enacts an InstantWinCondition... for him.
* BodySurf: Whenever he is defeated, he is able to transfer to another form to recuperate. These forms included Prinnies, Eryngi mushrooms, and the empty husk of [[VideoGame/MakaiKingdom Zetta]].
* BraggingRightsReward: Beating him usually results in little beyond a title change to Lord of Terror. Of course, if you ''did'' actually get anything from beating him, it'd be rendered useless simply on the basis that you already just beat the one guy literally one ''thousand'' times more powerful than anything outside of a Creator/NipponIchi game ever.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Essentially a FlatCharacter that never even spoke in his early appearances, but then he has been given SOME personality in that despite being an absurdly powerful demon, he apparently needs money.
* DemotedToExtra: Kinda. Starting with ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4| A Promise Unforgotten}}'', he became a {{DLC}} Superboss, added in the final patch for each game. To make up for this, he has become ''far'' more difficult than his previous appearances. This wouldn't end until Disgaea 6 where he was included as a standard postgame challenge again.
%%* DimensionLord
* TheDreaded: Even the most egoistical characters are afraid of him.
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: He was merely a blue PaletteSwap of the Capricorn demons in his debut in ''La Pucelle''. His more iconic Lord of Terror form would later appear in ''Disgaea: Hour of Darkness''.
* EvilIsBigger: Baal is one of the most powerful and dangerous beings in the Nippon Ichi multiverse, and his size alone makes that pretty clear. With few exceptions, he is the biggest character in the Disgaea series, his sprite towering over all others in the series. Later games even show that he can increase his size further, to the point where you only see his torso.
* EvilTowerOfOminousness: His castle.
* FromBadToWorse: If you lose to Prinny Baal in ''Makai Kingdom'', he'll go on to conquer the other netherworlds and make prinnies the dominant species and rulers of the universe.
* GalacticConqueror: He's stated to have conquered every Netherworld he come across before coming to [[spoiler:Krichevskoy's netherworld]]. If you lose to him in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'', he goes on to conquer the entire universe.
* ImpossibleThief: A plot in Disgaea 3 revolves around everyone gunning for him, outraged that he stole things such as Mao's "precious item", Flonne's commemorative DVD Box set, Laharl's height and screen time, Marona's innocent and pure heart, and ''the second "A" and space in Master Big Star's name''. [[spoiler:In the end, it turns out [[ShaggyDogStory he didn't actually steal anything to begin with]].]]
* JokerImmunity: Despite his numerous appearances, he never seems to die. ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom'' states he's an aggregate of evil souls, and that any time he's defeated, he'll just find another body and come back later.
* KillerRabbit: While he generally appears in his giant Tyrant form, he will occasionally appear in a less imposing form like a Prinny or Shroom. His stats are no less scary in those forms. ''Disgaea 3'' in particular has the cast breathe a sigh of relief upon seeing that Baal is just a mushroom until Mr. Champloo urges everyone to look at his level. Cue a collective OhCrap!
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLEReEjN6IA Great Wilder]] from his debut game plays in most of his boss appearances.
* MarathonBoss: Depending on the game and stats of the player's party, Baal can turn out to be this, but his ''Disgaea D2'' incarnation takes the cake. Among the few who have beaten him, even fewer have done it in under 30 minutes.
* MultiversalConqueror: And Laharl's Netherworld was next on his list. [[spoiler:He was stopped by Krichevskoy giving up his life to seal him away.]]
* NoSell: In the DLC fight with him in ''Disgaea 3'', he has an Evility that renders him immune to damage for one attack equal to the number of clones he has present. In Disgaea D2, he has his own version of Pringer X's Evility that nullifies damage from special skills after they are used on him. Mercifully, his immunity disappears whenever he switches out an Evility.
* NonStandardGameOver: Some outcomes of battle with him end like this. If Laharl is the party leader in ''Makai Kingdom'', then even if you defeat Baal, Laharl will destroy the body Baal's inhabiting (which, naturally, belongs to Zetta), leading to a game over.
* PhysicalGod: This guy is monstrously powerful both story-wise and gameplay-wise, nigh immortal thanks to his backup bodies, and a threat to all Netherworlds. Only Laharl managed to defeat him in canon, but even that defeat was a temporary setback.
* PowerLevels: The lowest level he's ever been at was 2000, during his ''VideoGame/LaPucelle'' incarnation. Later titles made his default level 4000. In later versions, his level was past 9000. Then his level became an exponent of 9999. And ''then'' he was given an absurd array of evilities that make him impossible to beat in a straight fight.
* PowersDoTheFighting: Makes no physical contact with his attacks. He doesn't move when attacking.
* SelfDuplication: Some fights with him have more than one of him around. In ''{{VideoGame/Disgaea 3}}'', this works with an Evility that makes him/them immune to one attack or skill used on him for every Baal present, meaning he has to be hit repeatedly to hurt him.
* SerialEscalation: Baal takes the concept of the overpowered Bonus Boss and runs with it. Progressively more so in each installment.
* SNKBoss: Turns into this by ''Disgaea D2''. Not only is he ''FAR'' more powerful than any of his previous appearances, his items can't be stolen and he teleports so he never loses the stationary attack bonus over the very long fight. He has six brutal Evilities he switches out throughout the fight, and always has his own version of Pringer X's Special Skill Solved. Starting, he will be able to automatically attack any of your characters whenever they hit the field. After that, he will use one that inflicts all status effects on your characters. Then he switches to having a 50% evasion rate. Then he switches to summoning two mini-clones of himself with the same movement he does, so if you don't kill them, they start to inflict a lot of damage. Then he starts to do automatic damage to your characters every turn. Finally, he switches to an Evility that destroys your base panel, meaning once he uses it, you can't bring anything else out or switch out units. It also heals him for 20 percent of his HP and SP every turn. In older Disgaea games, enough level grinding allowed for even a Superboss to be beaten easily, but not anymore.
* TheSpeechless: With the exception of ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 3|AbsenceOfJustice}}'', VisibleSilence and battle grunts are his only form of communication.
* {{Superboss}}:
** Nippon Ichi's most common recurring Superboss. Challenging him usually requires passing a difficult to pass bill in the Dark Assembly, though later ''Disgaea'' games has his battle patched in.
** In ''Disgaea 5'', [[spoiler:he can appear in the "this isn't a movie" Mystery Room along with [[VideoGame/ZettaiHeroProject Proto Darkdeath]] in place of the usual generic monsters if you're on a high enough Item World floor]].
* TookALevelInBadass: When it looked like Pringer X was going to phase him out as the premier SuperBoss, he returns in ''Disgaea 4'' with a vengeance, now far outstripping Pringer X in power and packing Evilities that make killing him an outright marathon. ''Disgaea D2'' makes his stats even more insane, gives him a version of Pringer X's evility Special Skill Solved, along with a number of other nasty tricks.
* VillainsOutShopping: His DLC appearances in ''Disgaea 3'' and ''Disgaea 4'' has him showing up for job interviews. In the former, Almaz guesses that even Tyrants need work.
* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: In all his appearances, his attacks all consist of summoning giant swords, some of which are as big or bigger than he is, and don't have any fancy effects. Thing is, these hurt a lot; in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 4|A Promise Unforgotten}}'', his standard attack can one-shot a level 9999 character.
** Averted as of ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2'', where his attacks now inflict status effects. And in ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 5}}'', Baal is his own stage hazard.
** In Disgaea 7, if he jumbifies, you automatically lose the fight. He is so powerful that becoming any bigger just destroys everything.

The MoeAnthropomorphism of Nippon Ichi Software, Nisa is a CanonImmigrant from the ''VideoGame/{{Neptunia}}'' franchise. Originally being one of the several Makers of Gamindustri, she has arrived in the Netherworlds from evil per request. While she hasn't had a major role in the games, she tends to appear as one of bonus DLC characters.
----
* ACupAngst: Her BerserkButton is someone pointing out her flat chest.
* AntiPoopSocking: She has a few base lines where she encourages the player to take regular breaks. In other words, [[EveryoneHasStandards even the personification of a video game company has standards]].
* CanonImmigrant: Was written out of her home series via its remakes, but has been a consistent DLC character in this series since ''Disgaea 4''. Her in-game descriptions also never mention where she's from though she will still shout that she's fighting for the sake of Gamindustri in her battle quotes.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Blue hair to go with her blue eyes.
* DubNameChange: Her name was changed from Nippon Ichi to Nisa, to represent NIS America.
* DynamicEntry: [[CallingYourAttacks Justice Kick!]]
* GogglesDoNothing: They're on her head, but more or less exist as a fashion accessory than anything else.
* LargeHam: She very energetic about letting everyone know that she's a hero.
* MoeAnthropomorphism: Double time in a sense; she is a human representative of Nippon Ichi in the ''Neptunia'' franchise, and her design evokes that of a Prinny (specifically, Hero Prinny).
* NavelDeepNeckline: She wears her jumpsuit unzipped to her stomach, even if she doesn't have any sort of chest to create a cleavage out of.
* OptionalPartyMember: Always a DLC character.
* RedIsHeroic: Most Nippon Ichi main characters have red in their character designs, often times their clothing. It's only natural that Nippon Ichi's Moe Anthromorph follows suit, wearing a red scarf around her neck.
%%* ScreamingWarrior
* SwissArmyWeapon: Prinny Gun. It's a gun and a LaserBlade.
* ThrowTheDogABone: She does this in ''Disgaea 4'' for Prism Red, becoming his first legitimate friend.
