!!Original ''Dead or Alive 5'' characters

[[folder:Rig]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rig_2.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:Rig as he appears in ''Dead or Alive 6''.]]
->''You're gonna be in for some pain.''

-> '''Origin:''' Canada
-> '''Fighting style:''' Taekwondo
-> '''Voiced by:''' [[note]]Creator/HirokiTochi (JP), Creator/LiamOBrien (EN, ''5''), Creator/KyleHebert (EN, ''6''-current)[[/note]]

----

->A new character making his introduction in ''Dead or Alive 5''. Little is known about him so far, other than that he is a Taekwondo fighter from Canada. He lacks recollection of his past, though Christie seems to know him for some reason. Bass is one of his coworkers out on an oil derrick.

->In reality, Rig is the son of [[BigBad Victor Donovan]] and together they have apparently plotted the entire events of ''5''.
------
* ActionGenreHeroGuy: In appearance anyway.
* AffablyEvil: Even if he's Donovan's son and his amnesia is just a facade, doesn't stop him to be nice for his fellow oil rig workers.
* ArtisticLicensePhysics: Mystical moves aside, most of the Break Blows in ''6'' are legitimate moves that obey the laws of physics realistically (RagdollPhysics aside). Then you have this guy, who, while SpectacularSpinning is actually a thing in Tae Kwon Do, goes from zero to two thousand from a standstill, without any charge up (as opposed to actual Tae Kwon Doka requiring at least a little bit of charge up), for the sake of looking cool.
* BaitTheDog: He's a pretty cool guy and gets along well with Bass. Which makes TheReveal about who he actually is a pretty good twist.
* CoDragons: With Christie to Donovan.
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: He's clearly modeled on Creator/WentworthMiller.
* EvilCounterpart: Rig could be considered this to Helena considering that they're both the children of powerful businessman related to DOATEC.
* FakingAmnesia: His amnesia was nothing more than a ruse to serve as part of Donovan's plan... or so we are led to believe. ''6'' reveals his memory issues are a lot more complicated than expected.
* HumanNotepad: His body is covered with tattoos, many of which are physics equations (including Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle) and molecular structures (including hydrogen bonding between guanine and cytosine).
* IdentityAmnesia: Christie seems to know him, but he has no memory of her. However Rig is actually a ManchurianAgent with a SplitPersonality. There's the friend of Bass who is for the most part cheery and jovial, and then there's the cold son of Donovan who only comes out when Christie triggers him.
* InTheHood: His default outfit has him wearing a hood.
* ManchurianAgent: ''6'' reveals that this is how his "amnesia" works. His default personality is Bass's cheery friend, but he has a 2nd personality that can only be awakened at Donovan's discretion, with Christie being the trigger.
* MeaningfulName: Seems fitting that a guy named Rig would work at an oil ''rig''. The ''verb'' "rig" also means "to manipulate fraudulently", as in ''rigging a tournament''.
* MrFanservice: [[https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/deadoralive/images/4/4e/DOA5_Rig_FightersPack.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130426081924 And]] [[https://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/deadoralive/images/0/08/DOA5LR_Valentines_Day.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160214211553 how]]!
* MysteriousPast
* NiceGuy: He's genuinely nice to his friends, and even helps [[ButtMonkey Zack]] convince Diego to join the Dead or Alive tournament in 6 while under the effects of the "amnesia" implant.
* NumerologicalMotif: Surprisingly, Rig attains this without having his own ArcNumber, thanks to a couple of his sports-themed costumes in ''5''. In his soccer uniform, Rig wears the number 10, which represents the attacking midfielder position, while for his Tecmo Bowl football jersey, he wears 17, a number usually worn by quarterbacks. These positions serve as star playmakers and offensive field generals in their respective sports, which matches Rig's fluid, creative, attack-minded fighting style as well as his true self's place near the top of MIST's hierarchy.
* ObviouslyEvil: His design screams this, plus playing with the FaceOfAThug trope.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Rig" is just a pseudonym; he doesn't remember his actual name. According to ''6'', his true identity is Victor Donovan, Jr., and "Rig" is just a split personality he uses as a disguise.
* OverlordJr: The son of Donovan.
* PetTheDog: Went out of his way to save his fellow oil rig workers, Bass included, when the oil rig was blown to bits. Considering Rig already had his memories as Donovan's son and was just playing amnesiac, this act was pretty much this trope.
* PoseOfSupplication: When defeated, Rig assumes a humiliating defeat pose where he is bent over on his hands and knees, with his butt protruding upward which appears to resemble him admitting defeat or begging for mercy.
* TakeThat: Yet another in a long line of Tae Kwon Doka that act in villainous roles in a Japanese fighting game. [[labelnote:*]]Japan and Korea don't have the best relationship, historically speaking. This is, presumably, a reason why practitioners of the Korean style of Tae Kwon Do tend to be villains in Japanese fighting games (as opposed to their underlying philosophy essentially boiling down to ForGreatJustice).[[/labelnote]]
* VillainousLineage: Like Donovan, he is not a good guy. Or rather, his 2nd personality isn't a good guy, as revealed in ''6''.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Bass. He likes teasing him about his motorbike, causing Bass to get angry about this, but both like to hang around with each other.

[[folder:Mila]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mila_7.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:Mila as she appears in ''Dead or Alive 6''.]]
->''Yeah. I'm here to fight!''

-> '''Origin:''' Spain
-> '''Fighting style:''' MMA
-> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/RyokoShiraishi (JP), Unknown (''5''), Amber Connor (''6''-current)

----

->The second new character introduced in ''Dead or Alive 5''. A waitress at a diner with an affinity for fighting, Mila is a mixed martial arts practitioner. She's a big fan of Bass Armstrong and also recognizes Tina, who offers to spar with her when the two cross paths. She joins the fifth Dead or Alive Tournament hoping to face Bass in combat.

->Unfortunately, she doesn't get the chance, since she loses to Hitomi in the quarter-finals. However, in the sixth tournament, she finally gets her shot and defeats Bass.

------
* AnimalMotifs: Bees — probably a reference to UsefulNotes/MuhammadAli's {{catchphrase}} "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee." She usually has a bee somewhere on her fighting outfits.
* AscendedFangirl
* BoxingBattler: As she uses MMA, her punches are derived from boxing.
* BoyishShortHair
* ComicBookFantasyCasting: Takes a lot of visual cues from Gina Carano.
* CuteBruiser
* GenderedOutfit: One of her DLC outfits in ''5'', which later returns as her most expensive base-game costume in ''6'', is a gendered version of Bass' first outfit from his appearance in ''5'' (with the [[WearingAFlagOnYourHead American flag bandanna]] around her left bicep) as seen on his folder, elevating her AscendedFangirl status.
* GenkiGirl: An uncommon Western version.
* GorgeousGaijin: This Spanish fighter can kick your ass and has muscles and curves in all the right places.
* GreasySpoon: Her place of work.
* HotBlooded
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Quickly became a best friend of Tina, due to her being a daughter of Bass.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She may be a talented martial artist, but she's still a {{fangirl}} of Tina and ''especially'' Bass.
* MeaningfulName: Suitably for a martial artist, "Mila" is a diminutive of the Spanish female name "Milagros", which means "miracles".
* [[WrestlingDoesntPay MMA Doesn't Pay]]: Still has to work as a waitress to get by, despite being a championship mixed martial artist with enough renown to get invited to DOA tournaments.
* NiceGirl: Mila is a friendly, cheerful girl outside the ring. In the ring, she is a good-spirited competitor.
* NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent: She doesn't have a Spanish accent in the English dub (her voice actress plays her with an American accent), even though fellow Europeans Christie and Helena ''are'' voiced according to the their nationalities (English and French). Possibly justified, as it’s implied she's lived in the United States for quite some time, and might have lost her accent over time.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Comes into the sixth tournament as a reigning champion in her home sport, which multiple other characters recongize, but we don't even get to see her with the title belt, let alone a flashback to her winning it.
* ProWrestlingIsReal: Pro wrestlers have been treated as real fighters in DOA since the beginning, and Mila reinforces it by incorporating a few moves into her arsenal, including her hero Bass's big boot and a Falcon Arrow suplex.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Tina's red. Well, at least by comparison.
* SpiritedCompetitor: She would make a great addition to the UFC, enjoying fighting, the competition, the training and demonstrates respect towards her opponent.
* {{Squee}}: Mila finds herself reduced to being starstruck when Tina Armstrong walks into the diner where she works.[[note]]Though this is more due to Tina being the daughter of Bass, which even Mila makes clear.[[/note]] After gushing for awhile the two ladies agree to do a little sparring.
* TokenWholesome: Ignoring her DLC bikini outfits, Mila is the second most modestly-dressed female character in the entire series so after Nicole from ''4''. Her most revealing costume is a sports bra that doesn't show off more than her midriff and even then it makes sense for her profession as an MMA fighter.
* {{Tomboy}}: Her look -- especially her alternate costume, which is jeans, t-shirt and a plaid shirt.
* YouthfulFreckles
[[/folder]]

[[folder:False Kasumi]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fkazumi_7.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000: False Kasumi as she appears in ''Dead or Alive 5'']]

-> '''Origin:''' Japan
-> '''Fighting style:''' Mugen Tenshin-style ninjutsu
-> '''Voiced by:''' Creator/HoukoKuwashima (JP), Creator/LaurenLanda (EN)

----

->She is one of the many clones of Kasumi. Created by Victor Donovan and the Dead or Alive Tournament Executive Committee, she was a creation of Project Alpha, an experiment with the aim of creating the perfect fighter and human weapon. She is a perfect Alpha clone that acts perfectly like the original. Working with Helena to stop Alpha-152.

------
* BadassAdorable: Because nothing describes this trope better than a CherryBlossomGirl (or at least a clone of one) kicking some major ass.
* BloodlessCarnage: There's no visible blood when she gets stabbed with Hayate's katana and Ayane's kunai.
* CherryBlossoms: Her motif.
* CloneArmy: She's only one of Kasumi's clones; Donovan has many more.
* DecoyProtagonist: Until partway through [=DOA5=]'s story mode, she appeared to be the real Kasumi and the protagonist of [=DOA5=]'s story mode; naturally, the actual protagonist is the ''real'' Kasumi.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: In Hayabusa's arms.
* DisappearsIntoLight: She dissolves into a green vapor resembling Alpha-152's teleportation effect... which is [[WhamShot the biggest clue that the Kasumi they killed isn't the real one]].
* FlashStep
* EvilTwin: Inverted example To Alpha-152.
* HighlyVisibleNinja: Let's face it: a girl with flaming red hair and wearing bright blue doesn't really blend in very well.
* KilledOffForReal: Partway through [=DOA5=]'s story mode, False Kasumi is killed by Ayane and Hayate.
* {{Ninja}}: Natch. Granted, she's only a clone of the real article, but she still fits.
* PaletteSwap: Justified as she's a clone of Kasumi.
* SpottingTheThread: The big tell that she isn't the real Kasumi is that unlike the genuine article, this one has a strange obsession with finding Alpha-152. The real Kasumi hated her clone and wanted absolutely nothing to do with her beyond her destruction, which Hayate and Ayane are both very aware of as DOATEC has screwed all three of their lives over equally.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: She looks the same age as Kasumi, but as a clone she was only created recently.
* WalkingSpoiler: Knowing '''anything''' about this character spoils the fact that the Kasumi we see throughout the first half of the fifth game isn't the real deal (because, let's face it, Team Ninja [[LikeYouWouldReallyDoIt wouldn't have the audacity to kill off their headlining heroine so suddenly]]).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Momiji]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/momiji_31.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:Momiji as she appears in ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate''.]]
->''It is an honor.''

-> '''Origin:''' Japan
-> '''Fighting style:''' Hayabusa-style aiki-jūjutsu
-> '''Voiced by:''' [[note]]Creator/YukoMinaguchi (JP), Creator/KateHiggins (EN)[[/note]]

----

->A CanonImmigrant from the ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' series. She was also the first character confirmed for the UpdatedRerelease ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate'', this being her debut in the series.

->Momiji is the last shrine maiden of the Hayabusa village. She got into this role after her older sister, Kureha, got killed during the events of the first Xbox ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' game. However, she was trained as a kunoichi by Ryu himself, and although she had a rough start, she quickly became much stronger and now is a full-fledged Kunoichi whose abilities never cease to impress her mentor.

------
* TheApprentice: Of Hayabusa.
* BadassPreacher: A rare Eastern FEMALE example. [[{{Miko}} Mikos]] don't fight, much less become freaking ninjas, but Momiji excels in both fronts all the same.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Competes with Kasumi for the title of biggest example in the series. She's one of the sweetest ass-kickers you can imagine.
* CanonImmigrant: From the ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' series.
* DoubleJump: She retains this skill from her original series, which allows her to do some pretty impressive strikes.
* {{Fundoshi}}: Her choice of underwear.
* LadyOfWar
* LastOfHerKind: After Kureha's death, Momiji is the only person worthy of guarding the Eye of The Dragon, the treasure of the Hayabusa village.
* LightningBruiser: Just like the other 4 ninja characters. Momiji is perhaps the slowest of the bunch (albeit still fast enough to qualify for this trope by non-ninja standards), but her agility makes up for it thanks to her DoubleJump.
* LovelyAngels: With Rachel in tag team mode. When paired together, the two will simultaneously strike a pose and proclaim, "Evil, begone!".
* {{Miko}}: Replaced Kureha at being the guardian of the Eye of The Dragon, now Momiji is a Ninja ''and'' a Miko.
* MyGreatestFailure: Momiji blames herself for Kureha's death to some extent, as she was taking her Ninja training in another village at the time while Doku wrecked the Hayabusa Village and killed her sister.
* NiceGirl: Probably tied with Kasumi as the nicest character in the game. Momiji is very polite and respectful even to her opponents, refusing to gloat over her victories and even wishing them better luck if they fight again. Her taunts reveal a mischievous side however, cutely yawning or sarcastically complimenting her opponent's performance. In ''Xtreme'' she always has something uplifting to say as a partner whether you win or mess up.
* {{Ninja}}
* PlayingWithFire: Some her attacks cause her to ignite her limbs.
* ReligiousBruiser
* SpectacularSpinning: Not nearly as crazy as Ayane, but many of her most powerful attacks include this.
* StudentAndMasterTeam: If paired with Hayabusa during tag team battles.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rachel]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rachel_12.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:Rachel as she appears in ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate''.]]
->''The night has lifted. Dawn has come.''

-> '''Origin:''' [[FictionalCountry Holy Vigoor Empire]]
-> '''Fighting style:''' Counter-fiend combat
-> '''Voiced by:''' [[note]]Creator/MichieTomizawa (JP), Creator/ErinFitzgerald (EN, 5), ??? (EN, 6)[[/note]]

----

->The second CanonImmigrant from ''Ninja Gaiden'' debuting in ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate''.

->A fiend hunter from the Holy Vigoor Empire, Rachel helped Ryu Hayabusa during the events of the first Xbox ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' game. She was somewhat a tragic heroine, since she and her twin sister Alma were afflicted with a blood curse that turns humans into fiends. Rachel still maintained her human form and became a fiend hunter.

------
* AllAmazonsWantHercules: Rachel has feelings for [[OneManArmy Ryu]]. She describes fighting alongside him as "having the strength of 100 others".
* AssKicksYou: Rachel's throw to crouching foes (named Quetzacoatl) involves her grabbing her foe's head, and ramming it into her rear.
* AnimalMotifs: A lot of Rachel's moves reference snakes such "Sidewinder", "Serpent's Coil", "Savage Snake", "Boa Bite", "Boa Hammer" and "Viper Sweep".
* CanonImmigrant: From the ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' series.
* CombatStilettos: Her main costume features and they are put to use in a way that would make [[VideoGame/SoulSeries Ivy]] proud.
* CoolBigSis: Most of all to Momiji, as seen in their tag scenes commonly.
* DoggedNiceGirl: In a rare female example, Rachel by the end of the first Xbox game has taken quite a liking to Ryu, but he promptly seems to refuse.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Rachel is half-Fiend, dresses in black leather and often puts up a harsh front outside of her interactions with Ryu and Momiji. She is unambiguously heroic nonetheless.
* DemonSlaying: Her occupation is a Fiend hunter.
* {{Dominatrix}}: Rachel has the outfit and harsh, merciless personality to match. She also has a move in which she stomps on the opponent and grinds her heel into them, and even has and even has taunts like "So weak!" and "Pathetic!".
* DressedLikeADominatrix: Rachel's outfit wouldn't be out of place at an S&M club.
* EyepatchOfPower: Her pirate costume from the "Halloween 2015" DLC set of ''Last Round'' comes with one. Her "Pirates of the 7 Seas" costume in ''6'' also has one.
* FictionalCountry: All characters come from RealLife countries except her, due to IntercontinuityCrossover with the ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' series.
* GroinAttack: Rachel has a move in which [[https://im.ezgif.com/tmp/ezgif-1-601ba8cf1e.gif she stomps and grinds her heel on her opponent's crotch]] while they're on the ground.
* HalfHumanHybrid: She is part Fiend.
* HellBentForLeather: Her main outfit which looks like something a {{Dominatrix}} would wear.
* HopelessSuitor: The Xbox continuity is established as prequels to the NES and then ''Dead or Alive'' continuity, by then Ryu is already HappilyMarried, certainly not with Rachel.
* HotTeacher: She isn't one herself but [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/deadoralive/images/e/e3/DOA5U_Rachel_School_Screen.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20131017040212 her DLC costume]] from the "School Uniform Pack" is meant to invoke this image.
* IntimateMarks: In one of Rachel's casual costumes, she has a tattoo of a rose on her abdomen just above her pelvic area.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Rachel puts up a tough façade as a hardened warrior and in her defense, she hasn't had an easy life what with her being afflicted with a blood curse that makes her part-Fiend and her sister being turned into a Fiend and then dying. Nonetheless, she does have a softer side that she shows to people once they get close to her such as Ryu and Momiji.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: One of her moves is stomping on her opponent and grinding her heel into them while they are on the ground.
* KillTheOnesYouLove: Rachel reached this conclusion with her beloved sister Alma, and since that point, she doesn't think there is another way to save her sister anymore.
* LadyOfWar: Rachel is a statuesque lovely woman and a powerful fighter.
* LeotardOfPower: Rachel wears a leather leotard.
* LovelyAngels: With Momiji in tag team mode. When paired together, the two will simultaneously strike a pose and proclaim, "Evil, begone!".
* MightyGlacier: Rachel has high damage but lacks speed.
* MsFanservice: Rachel rivals Tina and Christie in having the most [[https://deadoralive.fandom.com/wiki/Rachel/Dead_or_Alive_5_Last_Round_costumes provocative]] [[https://deadoralive.fandom.com/wiki/Rachel/Dead_or_Alive_5_Ultimate_costumes outfits]] in the entire series.
* NaughtyNurseOutfit: One of her costumes in ''5 Ultimate''. Just in case Team Ninja's renewed commitment to FanService wasn't clear enough.
* OrnamentalWeapon: Rachel has a sword on her right hip and one of her DLC costumes gives her a hammer strapped to her back. Neither of these can be used in matches. This persists even in [=DOA 6=] where the ninja characters can use their weapons in gameplay.
* PirateGirl: Her pirate costume from the "Halloween 2015" DLC set of ''Last Round'' and her "Pirate of the 7 Seas" costume in ''6''.
* PowerCreepPowerSeep: She's not as powerful as Ryu in ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'', but she can still fight and defeat Greater Fiends (assuming the player is skilled enough) during team play, and is explicitly said to have superhuman strength. Given that, she really shouldn't have any trouble drop-kicking people like Jann Lee and Helena into the next time zone in ''DOA''. Granted, this is a universe where regular humans like the aforementioned Jann Lee can punch out a T-rex.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Some of her moves reference deities and creatures of myth such as "Quetzacoatl", "Thor's Hammer", "Naga's Reverse", "Leviathan", and "Tiamat's Strike".
* SexySecretary: Her default alternate costume.
* SkeletonsInTheCoatCloset: Rachel's costume from the 2014 "Halloween" DLC set is a unitard made to resemble a human skeleton.
* SmugSuper: Some of her dialogue has her expressing an arrogant and condescending attitude towards opponents ("''[[DeadpanSnarker You're pretty good... for a human]]''". "''You're just a human after all''".). She displays a more respectful attitude towards Ryu and Momiji when paired with them in tag team matches and sometimes will even thank an opponent for putting up a good fight.
* StatuesqueStunner: She's one of the tallest women in the cast, and exceptionally gorgeous.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Rachel's choice of clothes for fiend hunting is unique, to say the least. Some of her alternate costumes also qualify.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Essentially, she is [[GuestFighter Nicole]][[Franchise/{{Halo}} -458]] from [=DOA4=], but with some unique moves of her own taken from her playable outings in the ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' series' [[UpdatedRerelease Updated Rereleases]].
* UnskilledButStrong: Rachel's fighting style revolves around brawler-style attacks and the use of her inhuman strength to overwhelm her opponents. Her combos do high damage but her lack of speed makes her attacks somewhat easy to predict and counter.
* WaifFu: Rachel is very strong despite her slender figure, and due to her cursed fiend blood she can best enemies many times her size and obviously more muscular than her.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Her moves include a suplex and a leg bar.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Marie Rose]]
[[quoteright:1000:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marierose.png]]
[[caption-width-right:1000:Marie Rose as she appears in ''Dead or Alive 6'']]
->''Let the red rose of blood bloom forth.''

-> '''Origin:''' Sweden
-> '''Fighting style:''' Systema
-> '''Voiced by:''' [[note]]Creator/MaiAizawa (JP), Creator/ChristineMarieCabanos (EN)[[/note]]

----

->A new character debuting in the arcade version of ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate''. She is Helena's new maid, hailing from Sweden and using the Russian martial art of Systema.

------
* ACupAngst: Played for laughs during her tag intro with Honoka. In the Japanese version, Honoka requests to borrow Marie Rose's chest, which is not only a pun on their radically different bust sizes, but in Japan, is also a way of requesting a sparring partner. This is derived from Sumo Wrestling where it is believed that a wrestler's power is derived from their chest due to the heart being located there. This tidbit was left out in the English localization due to the pun being untranslatable in the West.
* AnimalMotifs: Cats.
* AssKicksYou: She has a move where she throws herself butt-first into her opponent.
* BadassAdorable: She has some animations where she acts [[CuteClumsyGirl clumsy and uncoordinated]][[note]]Bear in mind this is in violation of Systema philosophy, as one of the tenets of the style is flow of motion and coordinated attacking.[[/note]], her win poses just scream {{Kawaiiko}}, and she has a weird move where she can turn her back to the opponent and blissfully stroll away in the middle of a fight. However, she also possesses some deft takedowns and can also leap onto her opponent and punch them square in the face.
* BreakoutCharacter: Brought a new wave of fans to the series as she covers fetishes and preferences aimed at current anime and manga fans, with her popularity quickly surpassing many mainstay characters. This culminated in the popularity poll for ''[=DOAX3=]'' where she surpassed the undefeatable Kasumi and Ayane to become the cover girl for ''[=DOAX3=]'' along with Honoka. She also made appearance as a GuestFighter in ''VideoGame/SenranKagura: Peach Beach Splash'' alongside Ayane and Honoka. She is also one of the four characters (technically six, counting ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden'' characters) from the ''Dead or Alive'' franchise to star in ''VideoGame/MusouStars''.
* BridalCarry: While Gen Fu can do this to any girl she is especially susceptible to this due to [[http://themilkguy.deviantart.com/art/DOA5LR-Marie-Rose-vs-gen-Fu-2-603937829 her small size (combined with her small weight)]]
* ElegantGothicLolita: Her default costume is in this style.
* FlowerMotifs: Roses, [[MeaningfulName not surprisingly]].
* GirlishPigtails: This is her sole hairstyle in ''[=DOA5=]'', where only her hair decs can be made optional. ''Xtreme 3'' allows her to let her hair down, and she puts it up into odango hair while wearing a bath towel in ''VideoGame/MusouStars''.
* LeotardOfPower: While not her default outfit, it's her most popular one.
* {{Meido}}: Her profession is "maid", and while it's implied she's Helena's servant in tag matches with her, ''Xtreme 3'' confirms it.
* NeckSnap: Has some throws making use of this, along with her Power Blow.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Looks to be about 13 of 14 years of age, but is actually 18 and older than Ayane by a few months.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: Is on the receiving end of one in the story of 6 by Bayman. Interestingly, despite the fact she was knocked out alongside the size, strength, and gender difference Marie was able to escape with relative ease... only to be pummeled into compliance.
* PetitePride: She doesn't seem to mind about her short and small cute appearance. In fact, she uses this to her advantage into fooling her opponents.
-->''Bigger isn't always better, you know.''
* PintSizedPowerhouse: "Systema" is a martial art practiced by the Russian Spetsnaz. A girl her size using it effectively is rather impressive (she is the shortest cast member of ''[=DoA5=]'', standing only 4'10"). Also in the Famitsu article that debuted her she can be seen applying a sleeper hold to resident pro wrestler Bass Armstrong.
* TakeThat: Nintendo's Swedish distributor Bergsala chose not to release ''Dead or Alive Dimensions'' in Sweden due to fears that the game might have been ''technically'' classified as child pornography by Swedish law (due to a then-recent child pornography scandal). So Team Ninja went on to introduce an underage-looking Swedish girl in the series. Coincidence?
* ThirdPersonPerson: She refers to herself as "Marie" in her victory quote, although this wasn't carried over into the English translation ("Yay, I won!") She does this much more frequently in ''Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation''.
* TokenMiniMoe: As of this date, she's the youngest ''[[OlderThanTheyLook looking]]'' character in the series (as most of the other characters are adults and the Kasumi clones [[YoungerThanTheyLook who are copied to look like the current Kasumi]]). Meanwhile Luna from ''Venus Vacation'' looks her age, but is the ''same size'' as Marie.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_cake Prinsesstårta (Swedish for princess cake)]].
* WolverinePublicity: Due to her newfound popularity as a BreakoutCharacter, much of the marketing for ''[=DOA5=]: Last Round'' and ''Xtreme 3'' revolves around her. Finally, as of the sixth episode the main series has given her an important role, even though she doesn't know it herself yet.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: She's highly aware of her adorable TokenMiniMoe appearance, and often uses this to her advantage by fooling her opponents. Her Rondo move looks like she's spinning in a panic, but it deflects punches and opens up the opponent to a counter. Her other evasive moves are acting like she's jumping in fright (dodging low attacks and maneuvering herself for a counter) and her aforementioned "walking away" move usually causes opponents to lower their guard. Case in point, her defeat pose involves her sitting down crying, then looking into the camera smiling as if checking to see the opponent is still there, and resume her fake crying. However, if this trick doesn't work, she'll drop the act and turn serious as Bayman finds out in ''6'''s Story Mode, when she manages to effortlessly break out of his OverTheShoulderCarry after being unable to fool him with helpless flailing and childishly pounding his back.

->Another new character added to the arcade version of ''Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate''. She is a new Kasumi clone from the M.I.S.T. organization, presumably to replace the rogue Alpha-152 (and also presumably more advanced, hence her name "Phase-4"). It is later revealed that she was the one who attacked Bayman and his unit.
----
* BadPowersGoodPeople: She's a ReluctantWarrior like Kasumi and doesn't like to fight, and she seems to view her powers as a curse.
* DifficultButAwesome: Her gameplay is based around canceling her attacks into teleports for powerful combos. However, said teleport cancels require extremely precise timing in order to be performed during certain moves.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the story post-credits, although she was already seen at the end of Prologue chapter, before becoming [[AscendedExtra playable, starting in Arcade version then as DLC in Ultimate]].
* FourIsDeath: Applied by her experimental name.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: She falls into this after attacking Bayman and his men, leaving afterward with a sad expression. She also dislikes having to kill people despite this being the purpose for which she was created.
* InterfaceSpoiler: Every alternate costume except the "Player 2" version of her main one shows her face.
* InTheHood: Wears a shroud that makes her seem very similar in appearance to Jill Valentine from the beginning of ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil5''. It can be pulled down as an alternate version of her attire.
* POVCam: Used very briefly when she attacks Bayman and his unit.
* ReluctantWarrior: She doesn't like to fight or hurt people, but has no choice in the manner.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: She wears a scarf in her alternate costumes.
* TeleportSpam: A majority of her moves will end with her teleporting with reckless abandon.
* YouAreNumberSix: The name "Phase-4" implies she is the most recent attempt at cloning Kasumi.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: She looks the same age as Kasumi, but as a clone she was only created recently.

->Yet another new character added to the Arcade Edition of ''Ultimate''. As her name suggests, she is the Tengu princess of Miyama, from the same dimension as Bankotsubo from ''Dead or Alive 2'', and uses the same fighting style as him. Although initially appearing in ''5'', she makes her official canon debut in ''6''. News of Bankotsubo's defeat has spread throughout the Tengu world, and her curiosity motivates her to investigate the man responsible: Ryu Hayabusa.
----
* AlternateCompanyEquivalent: To [[VideoGame/{{Darkstalkers}} Morrigan Aensland]]. Both are considered nobility in their supernatural planes of existence, travel to the human world to sate their curiosity and to have a good time, and both are very seductive.
* AntiHero: She is not at all evil like her predecessor Bankotsubo and is able to form a tag team with Hayabusa, who she considers a rival. If anything, she can best be described as mischievous, which is in line with her race's mythology. After finally meeting and being defeated by him in ''6'', she comes to respect, and even fall for, Hayabusa.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: Speaks in archaic Japanese, and uses the feminine "warawa" to show how otherworldly she is. This is translated in the English dub as having a very regal inflection in her voice.
* AmbiguousSituation: Her exact relationship with Bankotsubo, if any. All that is known is that she is curious about Hayabusa and wishes to challenge him since his reputation has spread throughout the dimension of the Tengu.
* AmbiguouslyBi: She flirts with various characters during ''Dead or Alive 6'''s story mode (such as Zack, Lei Fang, Brad and Ayane), whether they be male or female.
* AintTooProudToBeg: A special taunt that can only be done while she is knocked down involves her pleading for the opponent to "have mercy".
* AssKicksYou: She gains a new combo throw in ''Dead or Alive 6'' that ends with her pouncing butt-first on the opponent, sitting on them afterwards.
* AttentionWhore: Played for laughs in a special win pose with Ayane. When Ayane declares that [[TemptingFate no one will get in her way]], Nyotengu gets in front of her and hogs the camera before stating the same thing.
* AvengingTheVillain: In a way. Bankotsubo may have been a renegade to her realm, but she wants to challenge Hayabusa, the man who killed him, as his name has become legendary throughout the world of the Tengu.
* BlowYouAway: She uses a variety of wind-based attacks, seemingly produced by her small hand-fan or her wings.
* BroughtDownToNormal: In ''Xtreme 3'', she mysteriously loses her wings on Zack Island, making her an involuntary vacationer until she gets them back.
* CombatHandFan: Has a hand-held fan that she uses to produce wind attacks. Some of her alternate costumes replace it with a different object.
* CombatStilettos:
** Most of her outfits have her in ''"geta"'', which are a classic Japanese equivalent to western high heels. In particular, the type she wears, with a single large "tooth", are the typical footwear tengu are depicted wearing in folklore.
** Some of her alternate outfits have her in high heels proper.
* DistaffCounterpart: Of the original Tengu, Gohyakumine Bankotsubo from ''[=DOA2=]''.
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: Her given name is literally "Female Tengu". Her full title can be translated to "Female Tengu of Miyama", although a more appropriate translation is "Tengu Princess of Miyama"
* FemmeFatale: More of an InformedAttribute. Tengu are known for being {{Trickster God}}s whose deceptions and illusions cause calamity. But really, [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything she doesn't seem to be doing anything but having a good time]].
* FreezeFrameBonus: Her powerbomb air throw ends with her making an obvious orgasm face.
* GlacierWaif: Nyotengu has the highest damage output of any character in the game, but her movements are incredibly slow.
* ImpossiblyLowNeckline: With her default kimono.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: Downplayed since there's no actual sex but she does make some very suggestive noises when attacking and during one of her throws she asks her victim if it feels good.
* LargeHam: Just like the original Tengu, she speaks in an extremely over-the-top manner.
* LecherousLicking: Licks her lips suggestively in her third victory animation.
* LovableSexManiac: A RareFemaleExample. At least there's no actual sex, see also InterplayOfSexAndViolence above.
* MovesetClone: She uses the exact same style as the original Tengu.
* MsFanservice: Both her appearance and behavior are packed with sexual innuendos.
* NavelDeepNeckline: One of her alternate costumes is a SpyCatsuit that is unzipped from neck to crotch.
* NoblewomansLaugh: She can be heard doing one of these in her [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBZGzmVNrZs debut trailer]].
* OrgasmicCombat: She flat out ''moans'' during some of her moves, and her powerbomb throw ends with a very orgasmic expression on her face.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: In both folklore and the DOA universe, Tengu are demons that range between somewhat mischievous to outright evil and serve little purpose outside of causing calamities and misery for humans. However, while she certainly fits the "bad girl" motif, she doesn't really do anything heinous in the game proper. [[AllThereInTheManual Her bio states]] she has a grudge against Ryu, but even that doesn't really come up at all. For the most part, she doesn't seem to be doing anything but having fun.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: It's part of her wholesale look of iconic Japanese beauty, including the pale skin and dark hair.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: ''Dead or Alive Xtreme 3'' reveals she's 1018 years old; that is, she's an eighteen year old [[ExaggeratedTrope plus one thousand]].
* SexIsViolence: One of her air grabs has her powerbomb an opponent and ''apparently orgasm'' at the end of it.
* StatuesqueStunner: Makes the cut at 172 cm (5'8''). She is also very tall for a Japanese woman.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her default kimono doesn't leave much to the imagination.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: The "Ancient Nyotengu" who appears as a bonus boss in ''VideoGame/Nioh2'' may possibly be her mother. The Ancient Nyotengu looks almost exactly like ''DOA'''s Nyotengu, except that her beauty mark is under her right eye instead of on her chin.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: In ''Xtreme 3'' she's notably hard to get along with, being the only character with no starting relationship bonus with the other girls and acting very haughty when picked as your partner. However, build up enough relationship points and she becomes a sweetheart.
* TheTease: Almost everything about her is sexual, and she enjoys rubbing it in peoples' faces. Too bad you're not in her league, foolish mortal.
* {{Tengu}}: No duh. Her name is literally "female Tengu".
* ThisCannotBe: She doesn't take defeat well at all.
* {{Troll}}: In a cutscene in Venus Vacation, she shambles around like a monster to scare both Kasumi and Ayane. She's quite fond of being this in canon as well, as shown by her interactions in ''6''.
* UnknownRival: On both fronts. In the games, she is this to Ryu, who defeated Bankotsubo, whom she wanted to defeat. In ''Venus Vacation'', Kanna the {{Oni}} is this to her, but it's less of barely knowing she exists and more of treating her like an old friend. The latter isn't amused by this.
* WholeCostumeReference: One of her unlockable costumes is a skintight jumpsuit with a color scheme that is almost identical to that of [[Videogame/{{Darkstalkers}} Morrigan]], another lustful demoness with wings. ''DOA 6'' takes it even further with the ability to add a pair of wings to Nyotengu's head, making the homage even ''more'' obvious.
* WingedHumanoid: Like most Tengu.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: A few of her grapple attacks, including an air powerbomb.

----

->A new character added to ''Dead or Alive 5: Last Round''. Said to be a "schoolgirl with a mysterious power".
----
* AnimalMetaphor: Some of her alternate costumes show a cow motif in reference of her...assets.
* ApologeticAttacker: She has a winpose where she apologizes to the opponent and asks them if they can still stand up, while holding out a hand to help them up.
* AssKicksYou: She hits a lot with her butt. This is due to the fact many of those moves belong to other characters that share this trope.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: See EvilHand
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite being friendly and soft-spoken, she doesn't seem to have any qualms about having to break some bones in self defense.
* BreakoutCharacter: As with Marie Rose, she brought a new wave of fans to the series by covering fetishes and preferences aimed at current anime and manga fans, with her popularity quickly surpassing many mainstay characters. This culminated in the popularity poll for ''[=DOAX3=]'' where she surpassed the undefeatable Kasumi and Ayane to become the cover girl for ''[=DOAX3=]'' along with Marie. She also made appearance as a GuestFighter in ''VideoGame/SenranKagura: Peach Beach Splash'' alongside Ayane and Marie Rose.
* BreastAttack: Inverted in one of her Critical Bursts, in which she jumps towards the opponents and hits them with her bust, and in her some other moves from her arsenal, such as splashes and bearhugs.
* BridalCarry: She receives one from Hayate, who interestingly prefers to give one to Honoka to his similarly injured and drained baby sister Ayane.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: The new [[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/deadoralive/images/b/bd/DOA5LR_Honoka_Swim.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150116144834 bustiest female character]] in a cast famous for its busty female characters, with a whopping 99 cm/39" size. And despite her slender build, many of her moves come from physical strength orientated fighters like Tina or even Bass.
* ConspicuousGloves: She has a single glove on her right hand, and it seems to be connected to her power.
* DittoFighter: Like Raidou, her moveset consists of attacks pulled from other fighters (such as Tina's dropkick and one of Hitomi's strings), with the resulting mixture making her a Tsungxpert. See PowerCopying below.
* EvilHand: Her power appears to be sealed within the gloved hand. One of her throws demonstrates this power (she grabs her opponent then surges some of her energy through her arm, which takes the form of some kind of dark red flame).
* FashionableAsymmetry: Wears a glove with a skull and crossbones on her right hand, possibly connected to her "mysterious power".
* GenkiGirl: Has a lively personality.
* GirlishPigtails: A side pigtail, although leaving most of her hair loose.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: As seen in her ''Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3'' ending, one of Honoka's most treasured possessions is her stuffed cow plushie, Mister Moo. She takes him with her on her vacation to Zack Island, and is seen affectionately cuddling and talking to him like a real person.
* GirlyBruiser: A girly girl that can still kick your ass six ways to Sunday.
* GoofyPrintUnderwear: Honoka is exceptionally girly, and as a teenager, has a large collection of bright, colorful, and patterned panties with various designs like polka dots, stripes, plaid, and even a star pattern. She's one of the only characters to get some striped panties as a costume's default underwear.
** Also very visible on her matching bras when her shirt gets wet, given how massive her boobs are.
* IdenticalStranger: Honoka uses Marie's face model, which suggests that the two of them have some kind of connection. Marie and Honoka are also designated partners in her trailer. Played for laughs with a pun during their tag intro in the Japanese version. Although Honoka does have many (rather important) familial connections, Marie ironically ''isn't'' one of them; they're just close friends.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Her bio says her "Honoka-Fu" fighting style is a style she created by pulling inspiration from movies and pro wrestling.
* JigglePhysics: Notable even within the series. Her breasts are so massive and flop around so much that it's a miracle they don't fly out of her bra. Her thighs and butt bounce frequently, albeit they're harder to notice unless she's in a bikini.
* LukeIMightBeYourFather: It has been noted that her PowerCopying and red aura during her Hissatsu-no-Kamae moves are very similar to Raidou's abilities, leading many to believe that the two may be related. In addition, the two are tag partners, and their tag winpose has Honoka ask Raidou if she's seen him somewhere before. There's also an implication during her tag partner with Ayane, though Ayane isn't aware how Honoka is connected to Ayane's father, Raidou. These implications are [[LukeIAmYourFather confirmed]] as of the sixth game's story mode. Honoka is Raidou's daughter, Ayane's half-sister, and Kasumi's and Hayate's cousin, as well as Shiden's and Ayame's niece.
* MarshmallowHell: With her Critical Burst being a jumping attack with her chest, her opponents most often get a faceful of her breasts.
* MsFanservice: As if breaking the breast size record of the franchise wasn't enough, her attitude is very reminiscent of Japanese Gravure idols.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: [[MsFanservice Improbable busty, yet slender figure notwithstanding]], Honoka's body is still that of an 18-year-old. Doesn't stop her from sending opponents twice her size across stage with one strike.
* NiceGirl: Shows to be very friendly, and some of her victory animations show her running to the opponent with a concerned face to see if they're all right.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: In ''6'', when she encounters Eliot, she invades his personal space and simply will not leave until Marie Rose physically drags her away.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: Honoka receives one of these from many people during the story of 6. Interestingly even a Kasumi clone, who is physically equivalent to the tiny main character of the franchise Kasumi, was able to do an inverse version with Honoka's face forward and butt backwards.
* PinkMeansFeminine: Honoka is very cute and girly, stylistically, personality-wise, and parts of her wardrobe.
* PowerCopying: Like Raidou, she's able to learn any move that she sees, likely due to her "mysterious power". She's determined to test it out and learn the truth behind it while keeping it a secret.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Implied in ''Xtreme 3''. She frequently thinks about her "grammy" back home while vacationing on Zack Island.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Her hair is kind of pinkish, with a sweet, girly attitude to boot.
* ShoutOut: Her name and her side ponytail secured with a hair decoration are a reference to [[Characters/LoveLiveMuse Honoka Kousaka]] from ''Franchise/LoveLive''.
* SkilledButNaive: Honoka has the incredibly powerful ability to copy any skills she's seen, giving her an arsenal of dangerous moves. However, it still takes practice to perfect moves that her body isn't used to (she falls flat on her butt trying to use Ayane's SheFu), and these moves alone are also not enough to put her on the level of some of the more seasoned combatants of the Tecmo universe.
* StanceSystem: She also copied some of the other characters' stances, examples include Jann Lee's Dragon Stance (FunnyBruceLeeNoises included!), and Brad's Dokuritsu-Ho (standing on one foot) stance.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Whipped cream puffs.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Like Ayane, she probably didn't get her looks from Raidou, either.
* UnskilledButStrong: Her self-made style, and her idle stance, suggest she's not actually a trained combatant. That said, her mysterious power that allows for PowerCopying is so great that she's a LivingMacguffin because of it.
* UseYourHead: If her opponents are next to a wall, one of her throws has her headbutt them in the face, after which she rams her head into their midsection.
* WolverinePublicity: Like Marie, due to her newfound popularity, a lot of the marketing for ''[=DOA5=]: Last Round'' and ''Xtreme 3'' focused around her, even when the role she plays in the main series had yet to be established.

* CatchPhrase: "[[YearsTooEarly Juu'nen hayain dayo/Try again in 10 years]]!" and "[[BigYes Yosshaa/Alright!]]"
* ChildhoodFriend: With Aoi Umenokouji (who coincidentally shares some similarities with Kokoro).
* DanceBattler: Akira may not look it, but he has one of the most rhythmic fighting styles in the game. There's even a video that showcases some of his best combos (in real time) in sync with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQnkTgmRvcg the tempo of his theme music.]]
* DefeatMeansFriendship: He's unlocked during Kokoro's Story Mode Chapter when he sees her as a fellow Bajiquan user. They exchange greetings through kata and then have a match.
* DifficultButAwesome: Considered one of the hardest characters to learn, not just in ''Virtua Fighter'' but in fighting games ''period''. Also usually one of the best characters as well, though because of the different system in ''[=DOA5=]'' Akira's tools aren't as efficient and he falls more towards the middle of the tier lists. However, in '' VideoGame/DengekiBunkoFightingClimax'', he is more of JackOfAllStats / JackOfAllTrades friendly character to use.
* {{Expy}}: ''Virtua Fighter's'' "Ryu" in terms of appearance and stoicism, but his fighting style is a complete departure [[ShotoClone from what you'd expect.]] Except in ''VideoGame/DengekiBunkoFightingClimax'' where he becomes this.
* FriendlyRival: Something of one to Kokoro, given they both practice Bajiquan/Hakkyokuken and are quite amicable with each other in their interactions.
* GuestFighter: Also in ''VideoGame/DengekiBunkoFightingClimax''.
* HotBlooded
* IconicOutfit: Two of his default outfits have been around for quite a while. However, his red and blue outfit is more iconic, and usually worn for other crossover games, such as RPG/Fighting Game ''VideoGame/ProjectXZone'' and 2D Fighting Game ''VideoGame/DengekiBunkoFightingClimax''
* LightningBruiser: Akira's movement and attack speed is deceptively fast and he hits like a bullet train, which leads to death combos when fully mastered.
* MartialArtsHeadband: Yep, just like [[Franchise/StreetFighter you-know-who's]].
* SpiritedCompetitor: Much like Ryu, he lives for the thrill testing himself against strong opponents, as a means of bonding with others through their mutual love for the art.
* TranslationConvention: He and his fellow Virtua Fighters only speaks one language, regardless of the language you choose. This is actually rather jarring as his quotes come from old versions of the VF fight quotes, meaning they're a significantly different audio style from everyone else.

* TranslationConvention: She and her fellow Virtua Fighters only speaks one language, regardless of the language you choose. This is actually rather jarring as her quotes come from old versions of the VF fight quotes, meaning they're a significantly different audio style from everyone else.
%%* WrestlerInAllOfUs
* YearsTooEarly: One of her win quotes.

----

->The third ''Virtua Fighter'' character revealed for ''Dead or Alive 5''. A master of Ensei-Ken, who doubles as a famous Hong Kong action movie star. She has a rift with her father, Lau, over the death of her mother. She entered the World Fighting Tournament in order to face him in battle.

------
* AlternateCompanyEquivalent: Inverted example to Lei Fang. While ''Virtua Fighter'' (and Pai Chan's character) debuted before the ''Dead or Alive'' series, the two share subtle similarities in their respective fighting styles and [[DifficultButAwesome both are extremely technical]][[note]]Pai Chan's revolves around her StanceSystem, while Lei Fang is heavily dependent on her [[AttackReflector counter holds]][[/note]]. Their styles not only compliment each other, when paired together, they even gain two special tag-team intros, a unique team up throw, and two [[BackToBackBadasses special victory poses]] where they [[MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours proclaim the power of kung-fu.]]
* AlwaysSecondBest: See the OvershadowedByAwesome entry.
* AnimeChineseGirl: She's ''Virtua Fighter's'' poster girl for the trope. Her default costume and appearance can be seen in the picture to the right.
* BackToBackBadasses: Invoked during her tag-team [[VictoryPose victory pose]] with Lei Fang.
* BerserkButton: Anything to do with her father Lau, though they're starting to patch things up...
* BigDamnHeroes: ...after she saves him from being killed by a murderous monk.
* BirdsOfAFeather: She spent five tournaments trying to defeat her father, to avenge her dead mother, but her reasons eventually changed to trying to prove herself to him. Just as Lei Fang has spent the past four ''[=DoA=]'' tournaments trying to prove to Jann Lee that she didn't need his help. Which later changed to simply wanting to prove herself ''to him'' as well.
* BoyishShortHair: Which is one of several selectable hairstyles she has.
* BraidsOfAction: Depending on which of her costumes the player chooses, she alternates between twin braids, GirlishPigtails, and an odango hairdo. ''[=DoA=] 5: Ultimate'' gives you the option of manually selecting her hairstyle, by holding down any of the shoulder buttons, while choosing her costume.
* CallingTheOldManOut: To her father Lau for his obsession with martial arts indirectly killing her mother.
* DifficultButAwesome: While not as dominant as Lei Fang, Pai Chan is nothing to scoff at either. Her fighting style is stance heavy and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG6beE-KDUY many of her moves and combos require complex controller + button sequences]] that must be entered correctly with the proper timing. When fully mastered, she proves to be one of the most effective characters in the game.
* FamedInStory: In ''Virtua Fighter's'' canon, she's a famous Hong Kong actress, who's starred in several big name action films.
* FragileSpeedster: She's fleet-footed, evasive, and can chain lengthy combos, but she's a lightweight when it comes to stamina.
%%* GuestFighter
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: Her costume from ''[[http://deadoralive.wikia.com/wiki/File:02_doa5dlc07.jpg Virtua Figher 5]]'' is available as part of a free DLC pack for ''[=DoA=] 5''. It consists of [[http://img.2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130124163826/deadoralive/images/b/b3/Pai_-_DLC_02.jpg an elegant red Chinese robe]] with detached sleeves, [[ModestyShorts black shorts]] with gold inlays, and comes complete with a pair of gold sandals.
* LadyOfWar: She ties with Lei Fang and Helena Douglas for having some of the most jawdropping and graceful looking combos in the game.
* MissingMom: Her mother died from overwork and a terminal illness.
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: Seen during her team up victory pose with Lei Fang, where they proclaim the power of kung-fu over their fallen opponents.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Despite her proficiency in Ensei-Ken and regardless how much she improved, she lost every time she challenged her father, Lau, in the World Fighting Tournament. After realizing he was terminally ill and didn't have much longer to live, she finally settled for trying to prove she was worthy of carrying on his legacy instead.
* StanceSystem: She has several stances, including Bokutai and Meishouho (lit. ''"Sway Step"''), which can either be entered manually, or automatically at the end of certain attacks if the button is held down. While [[http://virtuafighter.com/threads/hakkeshou-new-stance.16040/ Hakkeshou]] (lit. ''"Eight Triagrams Palm"'') is a new stance she gained for both ''Virtua Fighter 5'' and ''[=DoA=] 5''. Each stance enables a specific subset of moves, adding to the complexity of Pai's character.
* TranslationConvention: Just like her fellow Virtua Fighters.
* {{Tsundere}}: Of the sweet type. It's said that her mood can change from outgoing to cold and distant at a moment's notice but, for the most part, she's very kind.
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: After repeat attempts to defeat her father, she began to wonder what was it that motivated him to pursue mastery of his art at the expense of their family. She eventually learned he was looking for a successor, due to his illness, and decided since she couldn't defeat him, she'd at least prove she was worthy of carrying on his legacy.

------
* ApologeticAttacker: A trait she carries over from her series.
* AssKicksYou: Quite a few: from her Ii Family Creed Stance, she can transition to Nemu (a jumping butt thrust), her throw-to-crouching-foes Tsukiyo-Usagi has her pommeling on her opponent before crushing them under her rear, her cliffhanger has her throw her opponent with her legs, followed by a falling butt crush, and her downed-opponent attack Warabi has her butt crush her fallen foe.
* DifficultButAwesome: Several of her moves discourage ButtonMashing and encourage precise timing, much like in her home series. If you do the inputs of certain strings as fast as possible, they will not combo correctly and will give the opponent enough recovery frames to perform a counter hold. Waiting until the very end of the animations, however, will cause more beneficial effects, such as more hits and greater stun. Sometimes these moves will not even combo off of the moves done before them unless you time them correctly.
* FishOutOfTemporalWater: As a native of the Sengoku period, she existed a good 500 years away from the modern times the rest of the cast live in.
* KickChick: Most of her attacks involve kicks, but she's capable of throwing punches here and there.
* MaleGaze: Her introductory teaser reveal focused first on her legs, then on her bust.
* OrSoIHeard: Two of her victory quotes involve [[ApologeticAttacker apologizing to her opponent]]. In the third, she says "Never back down! That's how the Ii family does things... or so they tell me...."
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Her signature Musou ability is brought over, complete with animation and symbol.

* AssKicksYou: Her sidestep Genei-Shiranui, and her hold Yusura-Ume. In ''Dead or Alive 6'', her Break Hold has her bump her opponent from behind.
* CallingYourAttacks: She calls out most of special attacks just like in her home series.
* CombatHandFan: And she is the first DOA character to use a weapon in a sense.
* FamedInStory: The intro lines used by the rest of the cast in ''[=DOA6=]'' when they fight Mai indicate that most of them have heard of her and consider her a WorthyOpponent.
--> '''Diego:''' Such a famous person is my opponent? Nice.
* GuestFighter: ''Twice over'' no less! She first appeared as a DLC Fighter in ''Dead or Alive 5: Last Round'', and returned as a DLC Fighter for ''VideoGame/DeadOrAlive6''. This makes her the first Guest Fighter in the ''Dead or Alive'' series to appear in more than one game.
* {{Homage}}: Eventually debuted on the series that has its female ninjas, including the protagonist, taking more than a few notes from her design and legacy.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure: She has even bigger hips and thighs than Honoka does.
* LagCancel: Like her home series she can cancel certain attacks in her specials.
* MaleGaze: Her trailer goes from her legs, up to her hips, and then her infamous victory pose with a view of her infamous bust.
* PlayingWithFire: She still uses her mastery of fire with her special attacks.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her outfit retains the design Mai had for most of her career in ''The King of Fighters'', where her uniform eventually got smaller and the fabric around her butt essentially became a thong; in contrast to her appearance for ''KOF XIV'' where the uniform is more in line with her ''Fatal Fury'' days, with the fabric around her butt covering a little more.
* TranslationConvention: Unlike Naotora, she doesn't get an exclusive English voice actress. Justified because Naotora is a part of Koei Tecmo and Mai isn't.
