!!Main Characters

[[folder:Sakuya]]

!!Sakuya

The protagonist of chapter Yang. A disciple of the disgraced Onmyoji Ashiya Doman, when the master of the Fujiwara mansion fell ill, she was sent there by Doman alongside her fellow disciples Dochin, Dokai, and Doryo, her brother. Sakuya fights with a handfan and starts the game in possession of a handful of spell cards.
----

* ActionGirl: Compared to Utsuki, Sakuya is involved in much more boss fights and has a bigger arsenal of offensive spells.
* AllLovingHero: She grows fond of Utsuki, to the point that [[spoiler:even after learning the truth, she swears to find a cure for her, and even after Utsuki goes on with the final Kuon ritual, she stops Seimei from killing her and raises the newborn Utsuki to give her the life Utsuki hadn't]].
* AllThereInTheManual: Sakuya comes from the Kamo clan, a RealLife clan of Onmyoji.
* CallingTheOldManOut: [[spoiler:When she learns from Doman that her co-disciples were nothing but sacrifices for the Kuon ritual, she angrily yells at him… and throws a fire spell for good measure.]]
* CombatHandFan: She fights with a sharp yellow fan, Doman's handiwork.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:As she heads for the dungeons of the Mulberry Shrine, she decides to burn the Mulberry Tree down. Turns out, by doing so, she actually killed one of the two twins permanently.]]
* MagicalBarefooter: Throughout the game Sakuya goes around barefoot. It's never stated if it ties into her powers for her role as an exorcist.
* OhCrap: She often has these reactions to the horrors she encounters, especially [[spoiler:seeing her mutated brother merged with Kureha]].
* PaperTalisman: Her main form of magic, which she shares with Utsuki. She mostly uses offensive spells such as [[PlayingWithFire Hibari, Hien, Karyuu, Onibi]], [[AnIcePerson Se'in Sekka]], and [[AllWebbedUp Fuumon]].
* PluckyGirl: Sakuya is one determinated girl. [[spoiler:Learning what Utsuki really is doesn't deter her the slightest and she still wants to save her.]]
* RageAgainstTheMentor: [[spoiler:Upon learning the full extent of Doman's treachery and what he did to Utsuki, she becomes determinated to stop him.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: She's the spirited, lively Red Oni to Utsuki timid, morose Blue.
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:Alongside Seimei and, in a sense, Utsuki.]]
* StakingTheLovedOne: [[spoiler:A boss fight near the end has her faced with her own brother merged with Kureha. Howwever, killing him is optional… and ambiguous.]]
* SummonMagic: Using her paper talismans, she can call upon the help of Shikigami, namely Sutegumo (a slow-moving GiantSpider) and Kugutsu Onna (a mobile living marionette).
* UncertainDoom: At the end of both hers and Utsuki's chapter, she's last seen [[spoiler:as a monstrous Utsuki lunges at her]]. Playing the unlockable chapter reveals what happened to her.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Utsuki]]

!!Utsuki

The protagonist of chapter Yin. Doman's daughter, she looks after the temple and her ill sister Kureha. When her father Doman is sent to investigate the Fujiwara manor and doesn't return for a while, she and her sister venture into the location. However, Utsuki hides many secrets…
----

* ActionSurvivor: Contrasting Sakuya, Utsuki faces much less enemies, and her technique with the knife shows less ability than Sakuya's own tessen-jutsu.
* AllJustADream: [[spoiler:Pretty much the first solid three-quarters of the Yin Chapter? That was just a dream she had while being merged with her sister.]]
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler:Turns out, Kureha eventually killed Utsuki and merged with her. The Utsuki you control in the last part of the game is, technically, Kureha, with Utsuki fighting her influence. The ending implies though that Utsuki is now reborn free… however, [[http://fftranslations.atspace.co.uk/kuon/kuonsolve.html the official JP guidebook]] indicates that this is NOT actually Utsuki, but a manifestation of the new Mulberry tree, similar to the Twins.]]
* TheAtoner: She had to live with the guilt of [[spoiler:causing Kureha's death, though it's implied that the Twins had something to do with it]].
* BodyHorror: By the end of her chapter, [[spoiler:she's starting to rot, in dire need of a fresh body to merge with]].
* CoolSword: She defends herself with a ''kodachi'', which gives her a shorter range.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: [[spoiler:Zigzagged, the Mulberry Spirit implies that Utsuki's new form upon completing the Kuon ritual will be the seed of a new Mulberry tree, but thanks to the efforts of Seimei and Sakuya's vow, it's implied that the reborn Utsuki will live on a normal and happier life… however, WordOfGod states that this isn't actually Utsuki, but she's also as much a rebirth of Utsuki as she is of those used as materials. Still, she does seem different than the Twins…]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Like her sister, Utsuki is noticeably pale.
* HeroicWillpower: [[spoiler:Despite the fact that she merged with Kureha, she apparently is in control of her actions… most of the time, and manages to let Sakuya go and look for a cure. When Seimei enters the cellar, Utsuki has burned all the corpses in the dungeon to keep her hunger for flesh and blood at bay.]]
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: She wears a splendid deep red overcoat typical of noblewomen.
* RedOniBlueOni: She's the timid, demure, and introspective blue Oni to Sakuya's lively red.
* ShrinkingViolet: Utsuki is very shy and reserved, and rarely talks back to others.
* SummonMagic: A good majority of her spells involve summoning. Aside from the above-mentioned Sute Gumo and Kugutsu Onna, she can also call upon the fearsome Saiga (a powerful wolf-like Shikigami), the Tsuchi Jogo (a bunch of hellish arms lying in wait which drag enemies stepping on them to hell), and Mari (an explosive living orb).
* UnreliableNarrator: If you play the Yang Chapter first, you'd notice that the events Utsuki goes through are identical to Sakuya even when it shouldn't make any sense… [[spoiler:turns out, the whole thing was dreamt by Utsuki as she was merging with her sister]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Judging by hers and Kureha's diary, young Utsuki was an adorable and cheery girl with a passion for Sugoroku.
* WhamLine: Upon finding Kureha's bloodstained diary and reading it in a cutscene, we later see her writing something on it after you finish reading it. [[spoiler:It says that Kureha has finally killed Utsuki and has merged with her.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kuon Chapter Protagonist (Spoilers)]]

!!UsefulNotes/AbeNoSeimei

The protagonist of chapter Kuon. Seimei is Doman's hatred rival and the greatest Onmyoji of the capital. Upon sensing something wicked brewing in the air, [[SamusIsAGirl she]] arms herself and goes on the move in order to stop the Kuon plot.
----

* TheAce: She's the most skilled Onmyoji of Japan, and can slay pretty much all monsters with incredible ease.
* BigDamnHeroes: She arrives just in time to save Sakuya from the vengeful Mulberry Spirit and put an end to Doman's plans.
* BigGood: Arguably she plays this role in the story. Unusually, not only does she show up near the end, but she's also playable.
* CatharsisFactor: After everything Utsuki and Sakuya went through, it's incredibly satisfying having Seimei [[spoiler:seal the surviving Twin forever and kill Doman]], as well as deal with the monsters in a few attacks.
* GenderFlip: Historical Abe no Seimei was a man.
* KnightTemplar: Downplayed, while she swears to help Utsuki, [[spoiler:she's ready to perform a MercyKill after she enters the Kuon chest, but Sakuya persuades her to let her live]].
* {{Oni}}: Her two unique summons are the Oni Zenki and Goki, appearing as imposing muscular humanoids in robes and masks: Zenki has red hair, a golden mask with a right horn and attacks the enemy face on, while Goki has white hair, a silver mask with a left horn and is a living CounterAttack.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: She's the greatest Onmyoji and nothing but reasonable and helpful.
* SummonMagic: She can invoke the Oni Zenki (to attack enemies head on) and Goki (blocks any attack directed at Seimei before counter-attacking).

[[/folder]]

!!Other Characters

[[folder:Kureha (Spoiler!)]]

!!Kureha

Utsuki's sister and Doman's daughter. She's ill and necessitates a special cure. However, she hides a terrible secret behind her real conditions...
----

* AdvancingBossOfDoom: During the last part of the Yang chapter, she slowly pursues Sakuya in a couple of locations. Thankfully, she isn't lethal, and while she can be killed, it's just easier to avoid her. A document wrote by Doman boasts about her being NighInvulnerable.
* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler:She eventually manages to murder Utsuki and merge with her, effectively becoming the playable Utsuki. Subverted by the ending, which seems to imply that Utsuki's personality wasn't overcome.]]
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:Best seen when she emerges from Lord Fujiwara's neck or when merging with Doryo, her torso lazily dangling from his chest.]]
* DeadAllAlong: Turns out, [[spoiler:she died years ago by falling off a cliff, apparently pushed by Utsuki, her own sister. However, she was put inside the wicker chest and was revived as part of the Kuon spell]].
* DeathGlare: She tends to deliver creepy intense stares at people, made easier by her sunken eyes and apparent lack of eyebrows.
* EyeTake: As you leave the northern pavilion after defeating Lord Fujiwara, [[spoiler:Kureha's head slowly pushes her way out of the massive neck wound, her eye rolling in sight and looking directly at the fourth wall]].
* FemmeFatale: When at the Shrine's tree, she can be seen acting seductively towards Doryo. [[spoiler:It was a trick to have him lower his guard before killing him and merging with him.]]
* FusionDance: [[spoiler:Due to the Mulberries, she has to periodically merge with animals and later people to keep the decay from spreading. Over the course of the game, her victims include Lord Fujiwara, Ayako, Doryo, Utsuki herself, and finally Doman. The merging ranges from using her victim like some sort of puppet to completely assimilate them… or actually merge with them as seen with Utsuki, who retains most of her personality.]]
* SanitySlippage: As seen in her diary, she was very sweet and caring to Utsuki, but after her accident, periods of illness, and dreams of the Twins, she slowly became more bitter and angrier at Utsuki. [[spoiler:She snaps when she remembers that it was because of Utsuki that she died.]]
* StringyHairedGhostGirl: Has the looks of an Onryo, especially when turned hostile.
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:Her villainy is a result of the corruption caused by the Mulberries and helped by her own father Doman.]]
* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler:She apparently merged with Utsuki, but the latter has shown enough willpower to keep control of her actions, and by the time the Kuon is complete, the newborn baby resembles Utsuki more than Kureha.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Doryo]]

!!Doryo

Sakuya's brother and one of Doman's disciples. A skilled and aloof Onmyoji who does care for his sister.
----

* AloofBigBrother: He's Sakuya's blood brother, and most of the time seems to be aloof to her, especially in the Shrine, where it's implied that he wants to be left alone with Kureha.
* DistractedByTheSexy: He seems to be smitten with Kureha, who seems to like him. [[spoiler:Leads to his death and merging.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rather standoffish with Sakuya, but also seems to be a nice and chivalrous guy in the right circumstances.
* SkippableBoss: [[spoiler: When half-merged!Doryo emerges from the chest, you can fight it to recover the Uranus cloth from the chest… or you can run away, return to the area later, and recover the cloth. Doryo!Kureha will attack again as you try to get away, but you can escape him by hiding inside the wicker chest.]]
* TragicMonster: [[spoiler:He's found in a wicker chest, half-merged to Kureha.]]
* UncertainDoom: [[spoiler:Downplayed; if you evade his monster form, then he'll probably be assimilated by Kureha. If you defeat him, though, he and Kureha will suddenly let out a scream followed by a Tempest and will then disappear. Thus, it is hard to understand if he was still assimilated or if he died before the ritual could be completed.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dokai]]

!!Dokai

One of Doman's disciples. A detatched and cold scholar.
----

* BlatantLies: When Sakuya enters the room in the Closet area where a Gaki ambushes her, someone locks the door behind her. After slaying the Gaki, Dokai will open the door and come in, but when questioned, he claims he didn't see who locked the door. His first note found much later confirms that he was leading an "experiment" with the Gaki.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:By the time he's become infected, he looks deranged, his skin is unnaturally pale, and large patches of his flesh have rotted away.]]
* BreakTheHaughty: In the Yin chapter, he's mad with fear and runs away screaming in terror when Utsuki approaches him. [[spoiler:Even in his boss battle, he will pathetically crawl away on his back, casting spells.]]
* {{Jerkass}}: Cold, haughty, and condescending, he seems much more interested in studying the monsters in the manor than helping the survivors.
* MadScientist: When you read his logs, you find out that he was conducting experiments on the Gaki and the silk present in the manor. [[spoiler:He even underwent Kuon himself, and in the Yang chapter, he tries to merge forcefully with Sakuya.]]
* MirrorBoss: [[spoiler:In the Yang chapter, he fights like Sakuya, summoning Sute Gumo and attacking from a distance with Hibari, Hien, and using Onibi up close.]]
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:In the Yang chapter, he locks himself up with Sakuya in the main shrine and tries to gleefully merge with her to pursue the Kuon curse, while in the Yin chapter, he's a sobbing mess scared out of his mind and desperately trying to stay alive.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Dochin]]

!!Dochin

One of Doman's disciples. A young and enthusiastic boy.
----

* CheerfulChild: Downplayed, though he's the youngest of his group and seemingly the most energic and inquisitive of the four Onmyoji.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:As he's trying to run for his life, he's mauled by a mutated Lady Fujiwara, killed, and dragged upstairs to be put in a wicker box.]]
* TheLancer: He helps Sakuya exploring the Temple, unlike Dokai and Doryo.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Twins]]

!!The Twins

Two mysterious children clad in red clothes and singing a creepy lullaby. They seem to know something about the ongoing hauntings.
----

* TheBadGuyWins: [[spoiler:At the very end, the surviving Twin manages to make Utsuki merge with Doman and complete the Kuon curse. Defied by Sakuya, who apparently manages to raise Utsuki correctly.]]
* BrownNote: Their singing? [[spoiler:It's actually a way to accelerate the process of Kuon.]]
* CreepyChild: Chalk-white skin? Appearing in a monster-infested mansion? Singing a creepy song and making cryptic references to dying people? Those two are uncanny.
* CreepyTwins: As mentioned above, the Twins are identical and they either talk in unison or by FinishingEachOthersSentences. [[spoiler:They are also the spirits of a Mulberry tree.]]
* DeathGlare: [[spoiler:The surviving Twin gives one to Sakuya after she burns down the Tree in the Shrine.]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:The surviving Twin seems to be genuinely mortified by the death of his brother and carries his burnt corpse around.]]
* EvilGloating: [[spoiler:As Utsuki enters the wicker box with Doman's corpse, the Twin boasts to Seimei that now the Kuon is complete and a new Tree will be born.]]
* IronicNurseryTune: They can be heard singing the children's song "Hashizoroe" during the game.
* KillItWithFire: [[spoiler:Fire can destroy the Mulberry Trees and kill the spirit, which appears as a burnt corpse.]]
* IllKillYou: One of the Twins delivers a chilling one to Sakuya [[spoiler:after she burns the Shrine's Tree down, killing his brother]].
* TheManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:The Kuon curse Doman is studying is merely a way to turn people into a new Mulberry Tree. Essentially, a more supernatural and convulted spin on FaceFullOfAlienWingWong.]]
* OhCrap: One of the Twins has one when [[spoiler:Abe no Seimei smacks him aside with one blow before putting two Demon-subduing spikes to the tree]].
* SealedEvilInACan: The game mentions "demon-subduing spikes" multiple times, and if one examines the Mulberry Tree in the mansion closely, three holes can be seen. [[spoiler:Doman found out that the spikes were used to keep the spirits sealed, and Seimei notices that the metal qi of the spikes is perfect to counter the wood qi of the Mulberry Spirits, and proceeds to recover the remaining spikes to seal the Mulberry Spirit forever.]]
* WouldHitAGirl: [[spoiler:When Seimei finds Sakuya, she's drenched in blood and visibly in pain, while the Twin stands nearby singing.]]
* {{Youkai}}: Implied to be supernatural spirits, and revealed to be, essentially, evil Kodama (tree spirits).

[[folder:Lord Fujiwara]]

!!Fujiwara Yorichika

----

* BodyHorror: Has rotting brownish skin, moves on all four like a grotesque spider, and has a massive open wound in his neck. [[spoiler:After dying, Kureha slowly emerges from his neck gash.]]
* ClimaxBoss: He's fought in both chapters, overall at the point where the plot at the mansion is resolved and moves on to the next portion of the plot.
* DeadlyLunge: He can perform sudden leaps forward to close the distance.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: A spectral form of Fujiwara can be seen wandering Ayako's quarters and in the corridor leading to the sealed door to the northern pavilion.
* JumpScare: A sudden Tempest in the middle of the room, he also suddenly grabs Sakuya/Utsuki as they reach for the bell and slumps into the room.
* MacGuffinGuardian: He's watching over the bell needed to gain Ayako's trust.

* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler:Because of the player's actions, Ayako is taken away by Kureha, who merges with her.]]
* SoleSurvivor: By the time the protagonists arrive to the Mansion, she's still alive but scared out of her wits.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lady Fujiwara]]

!!Lady Fujiwara

The lady of the mansion. Having realized she became infected, she went to the nearby temple and isolated herself to avoid infecting others. Unfortunately, she too became a monster.
----

* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:When she fights Sakuya, her neck twists, elongates, and splits in half to reveal a massive centipede connecting her head to the rest of her torso.]]
* CameBackWrong: Judging from her transformation, it's implied that Kuon went awry for her, possibly because of the centipede she merged with.
* CreepyCentipedes: In her diary, she mentions waking up inside the wicker box with a centipede beside her, and later claims that she feels "something" squirming and crawling under her skin. [[spoiler:When faced in combat, her neck twists and grows, revealing that she has a massive centipede in lieu of her spine.]]
* DropInNemesis: After finding the Onmyoji's corpse in the underground dungeon under the Temple and the sealed door, Sakuya runs into a terrified Dochin trying to escape something, but he's attacked by Lady Fujiwara and dragged away upstairs.

* WrongGenreSavvy: She believes that Gaki won't enter a buddhist temple, but the Onmyoji hired to check things is skeptical.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:High Priest]]

!!High Priest

The kind and helpful bonze guarding the Temple on the other side of the mansion. He's watching over the infected, intoning his sutras to keep them calm.
----

* GoodShepherd: Even if infected and surrounded by roaming living dead, he's still determinated to at the very least pray for them as he waits for the end, and has sealed the temple's doors to keep them from escaping.
* NeckSnap: In the Yin Chapter, a Yamabito reaches through the latticeworks and snaps his neck.
* NiceGuy: According to the various logs, he seemed to be a kind and helpful person.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ashiya Doman (Spoilers!)]]

!!Ashiya Doman

Master of the Mulberry Shrine on the mountain, Doman is a powerful Onmyoji who was exiled from the capital after a fall from grace. Blinded by his envy of Seimei's success, he's currently studying the events of the Mansion in search for power.
----

* AbusiveParents: [[spoiler:He experimented on Kureha and coldly manipulated Utsuki in his quest to perform the Kuon ritual and gain the notoriety he always wanted. He even has the gall to add insult to injury by gloating to Kureha after the ritual is underway that it was the Twins who were actually responsible for her death and that her hatred towards Utsuki was pointless.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Seimei being this to him drove him to seek help in heretical arts to grow stronger.
* BarrierWarrior: [[spoiler:When in combat, he can protect himself with bright orange dome-shaped barriers when not attacking.]]
* BeardOfEvil: The only character with a visible goatee beard aside from Lord Fujiwara. No wonder he's the bad guy.
* BerserkButton: Absolutely loathes Abe no Seimei, a far greater Onmyoji than he'll ever be.
* BigBad: [[spoiler:While the Mulberry Spirits caused Kureha's death and revival to create another Mulberry tree, Doman decided to use the Kuon ritual as a way to regain status and respect and get even with Seimei, sacrificing countless innocents to his studies.]]
* CastingAShadow: [[spoiler:As a boss, he can occasionally cast a shadow spell on the ground to engulf Seimei and her summons.]]
* DrivenByEnvy: He's extremely envious of Seimei's status and powers. [[spoiler:To the point that he kickstarted the entire plot as a way to get back at her.]]
* EvilIsPetty: In his diaries, he [[spoiler:confesses he intends to prove his superiority to Seimei and have her whore herself to him]].
* EvilSorcerer: Doman is a sinister-looking Onmyoji who expresses open contempt for Seimei. [[spoiler:He's also trying to use the Kuon curse to regain his prestige.]]
* {{Expy}}: Of [[VideoGame/ResidentEvil Albert Wesker]] (first game): male authority figures who send the heroes to explore an haunted house with riddles, locked doors, and flesh-eating monsters? [[spoiler:Secretly being the mastermind behind the whole accident, deliberately sending your men to their doom to fuel your plans? Check. He even dies a KarmicDeath related to his pet project and, in a way, comes BackFromTheDead.]]
* FinalBoss: [[spoiler:Of the Kuon chapter.]]
* ImmortalitySeeker: Subverted, even if he's studying the qualities of the Mulberry Trees, he doesn't seem to be willing to use the Kuon on himself.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:Not only is he killed by his bitter rival Abe no Seimei, but Utsuki gets ahold of his body and uses it to complete the Kuon curse, reviving herself.]]
* KickTheDog: Near the end of both chapters, he drops the reveal that [[spoiler:either Kureha died and Utsuki is now merged with her or confirms to Sakuya that her co-disciples were only sacrifices for the Kuon]].
* MadScientist: He seems to be oddly interested in the events of the manor. [[spoiler:His diary confirms that he experimented with the Mulberries and the cocoons to solve the secret of the Kuon curse.]]
* MundaneUtility: In one of his diaries, Doman mentions that the supernatural silk found in the Shrine and Manor can also be used to weave barriers, unpassable seals, and even create puppets which can move on their own.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Based on the historical Onmyoji Ashiya Doman, who was Abe no Seimei's historical rival.
* TheResenter: Ever since Seimei humiliated him and made him leave the capital, Doman has always carried a grudge.
* StalkerWithACrush: [[spoiler:His diary mentions his desire to have Seimei whore herself to him, and before their fight, he threatens to use her corpse to make a subservient puppet.]]
* WhosLaughingNow: [[spoiler:The whole Kuon curse was meant to show those people in the capital that Doman is a powerful Onmyoji, not to be underestimated.]]

[[/folder]]

!!Monsters

[[folder:Ghosts]]

!!Ghosts

Apparitions roaming in the night, Ghosts are the weakest enemies you can encounter in game. They will often manifest attracted by loud noises.
----

* GlassCannon: Despite being ghosts, they are vanquished in one hit.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: They are the ghosts of the inhabitants of the manor, appearing as translucent humanoid figures. They will usually appear if the character makes loud noises.
* TeleportingKeycardSquad: Aside for a few scripted encounters, most Ghosts won't show themselves unless you deliberately make some noise in certain areas by running and knocking down trays and stuff.
* ZergRush: In the Underground Cliff during Chapter Yang, running near the Mirror plinth will cause a Tempest and summon a veritable horde of ghosts which will then attack Sakuya from all sides.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gaki]]

!!Gaki

Also known as "Hungry Ghosts", these bloated, flesh-eating ghouls infest the Mansion and the nearby shrine. They are comparatively easy to deal with.
----

* BaldOfEvil: Whatever curse befell them, they lost any trace of facial hair and scalp hair.
* BodyHorror: Gaki, as per myth, are horrorifically skinny with oversized bloated bellies and creepy faces with costantly open eyes.
* TheGoomba: Since all encounters with ghosts are technically optional, Gaki are the most common enemies you can run into while exploring the Mansion and the surrounding areas.
* IAmAHumanitarian: They're completely overtaken by hunger and more often than not are seen feeding on corpses. Dochin even mentions using a fresh corpse as a DeliciousDistraction to get a Gaki off him.
* WasOnceAMan: As revealed later on, Gaki are hatched from cocoons if they are left in the open and breach too soon, which is why the large wicker baskets are so important.
* {{Youkai}}: Gaki are ravenous youkai who will eat anything and whose presence cause hunger in all living things. In this game, though, they're more akin to zombies. Lady Fujiwara also speculates that Gaki cannot enter the Buddhist temple, but she's wrong.

[[folder:Ennyo]]

!!Ennyo

A creeping corpse-like monster entirely composed of flesh, with tentacles protruding from the back and a hint of a head poking from the front. A single specimen is locked away inside a closet.
----

* BodyHorror: A disgusting mass of flesh which crawls on the floor, sports vaguely human attributes, and, judging from its noises, is in costant pain.
* BlobMonster: Ennyo is seemingly boneless, as it's first found cramped inside a closet but expands into a human-sized horror when freed, and melts down in a puddle of flesh when defeated.
* BloodyMurder: Ennyo's only attack consists of spewing a splash of blood from what's presumably its mouth.
* CombatTentacles: A set of shapeless appendages emerge from the Ennyo's back, but given how slow it is, chances are you won't see them in action.
* DegradedBoss: Shows up once in the small room with the closet once in both chapters. By the time of chapter Kuon, no less than three Ennyo can be encountered inside the mansion.
* FlawedPrototype: Implied to be a failed attempt to make the Kuon ritual working on people.
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNoWhere: One moment you're exploring one of the small rooms of the mansion, then you hear some muffled noises coming from a suspicious closet and all of a sudden you're fighting a large mass of flesh spewing blood at you. Neither Sakuya nor Utsuki will comment upon it.
* MeaningfulName: "Ennyo" can be written as "冤如", meaning "[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Likeness of Hatred]]".
* WasOnceAMan: Implied to be what happens when an incompatible host is wrapped in a cocoon, failing to even become a Gaki.

[[folder:Yamabito]]

!!Yamabito

The former inhabitants of the mansion who fell "ill" and reanimated as miasma-spewing corpses. They are slow-moving but are surprisingly strong in close quarters.
----

* BattleAura: Yamabito can be easily identified by the purplish-black swirling cloud of miasma surrounding them.
* EliteMooks: They are slower than Gaki, but more resistant and hit harder.
* KingMook: There's a MiniBoss variant who's essentially an Onmyoji infected and reanimated. This Yamabito can be easily spotted due to his yellow clothes and moves and attacks much faster than the others. He also becomes a RecurringBoss in the Yin Chapter.
* NotUsingTheZWord: Their name translates to "Sick Person/Man", and they are always called either "the diseased" or the "hungry ones". Justified, as the word "Zombie" had yet to become mainstream.
* PlagueZombie: They are living corpses infected with some kind of demonic plague, but aren't contagious. Apparently they're people subjected to the Kuon spell who haven't been cocooned yet, and thus are rotting away and will eventually die if left alone.
* UndeathlyPallor: They have dull grayish skin.
* ZombieGait: They walk around in a slow, ominous way. The Onmyoji Yamabito can run however.

!!Mizuhiki

Grotesque mockeries of humans, transformed into fish-like, acid-spewing abominations. They dwell inside the pond of the mansion and the connected creeks.
----

* AcidAttack: Their main attack has them puke green corrosive liquid at the player.
* BodyHorror: Not only are they horrorifically rotten and reduced to crawling on all fours, but part of their bodies have become fish-like, with fins growing on their faces and their right leg half-fused with a massive fish tail growing on their back.
* FishPeople: Mizuhiki have grow scales, tails and fins over their bodies, and they usually dwell in the water.
* GrossUpCloseUp: If you trigger the Mizuhiki ambush at [[spoiler:the Spring]], you'll get to see them in close up, in all their rotten, scaly glory.
* MakingASplash: Their other attack has them attacking in all directions with splashing water.
* MeaningfulName: Mizuhiki can translate to "Water Dragger", and the first hint of their presence are the blood stains leading from where there once was a corpse to the water.
* WasOnceAMan: They look like Gaki merged with ichthian features, implying that something with them went even wronger.
* WolfpackBoss: If you check a certain area in [[spoiler:the Manor's Spring]] after collecting the right PlotCoupon, you will trigger an attack by three starved Mizuhiki.

[[folder:Adamushi]]

!!Adamushi

Creepy horrors dwelling beneath the Temple and the Shrine, these creatures resemble a mishmash of flesh and silk. They crawl around on their arms but can be surprisingly powerful when confronted.
----

* BeastWithAHumanFace: They mostly resemble grotesque silkworms with rotting human heads on the top.
* BlobMonster: They look like a perfected counterpart to the Ennyo, though their body is seemingly covered in silk. They still make squishy sounds when moving around and form a rounded mound when slain.
* BodyHorror: Adamushi resemble grotesque mishmashes of silkworms, cocoons, and people, with the human-like heads and arms poking in on one side and a caterpillar-like body on the other.
* DeadlyLunge: While they don't look dangerous, Adamushi can crawl forward with surprising speed, taking the player by surprise.
* MeaningfulName: Adamushi can be written as "仇虫" which means "Grudge Bug". Appropriately, they are part of the process for the Kuon (Nine Grudges) spell.
* WasOnceAMan: From what you can deduce, Adamushi were subjects cocooned and put inside wicker chests, but weren't fit for the Kuon spell.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Since they cannot turn around easily, they are easy prey for the Tsuchi Jogo spell.

[[folder:Mashira]]

!!Mashira

Once normal mountain monkeys, the plague which befell on Fujiwara Mansion turned them into highly aggressive monsters with a taste for human flesh. They infest the mountain path leading to the Mulberry Shrine.
----

* JumpScare: The first Mashira makes its presence known by suddenly roaring from a tall rock after Sakuya examines the mummified corpse on the path.
* LightningBruiser: The Mashira are very powerful in melee, and also much faster than the Yamabito or Gaki. Fortunately, there's only two of them.
* ManiacMonkeys: They appear as huge, murderous monkeys with a taste for human flesh and great ferocity. Wether they are a result of the Kuon or not is unknown. Curiously, they have rather long tails, unlike Japanese Macaques.
* MeaningfulName: Mashira is the old Japanese for "Monkey", before "Saru" became widespread. Justified, as the game is set during the Heian Period.
* RaisingTheSteaks: The curse of undeath seemingly hasn't spared the monkeys, turning them into ferocious revenants.
* {{Youkai}}: Based on the Hihi, a monstrous monkey-like predator living in the mountains.

[[folder:Giant Mashira]]

!!Giant Mashira

A giant Mashira who has been around for a long time, currently dwelling in an abandoned hut in the mountains between the Fujiwara Mansion and the Mulberry Shrine.
----

* AnimalisticAbomination: A gigantic, monstrous monkey monster who has undergone undeath.
* AnnoyingArrows: Not only does it have several arrows embedded in its back, it also sports a katana stabbed in the chest.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: The largest boss of the game, towering over all other characters, except maybe for Seimei's Oni familiars.
* HopeSpot: The monster seems to not notice Sakuya's presence outside the hut and will only react to her if she enters the place at the wrong time, so you may be thinking it can be easily avoided… but as you leave the place with the mallet you needed, the game briefly shows the Mashira outside the hut suddenly turning his head towards Sakuya. Boss fight ensues.
* KingMook: It's a giant and stronger version of the normal Mashira enemies.
* MacGuffinGuardian: Sort of, the giant Mashira has taken residence inside the old abandoned hut, the same hut where the mallet Utsuki needs for fixing the ladder to the Shrine is kept. In order to recover the hammer, Sakuya has to evade the boss inside the hut, though it's not too difficult. However, as Sakuya leaves the place, the monster notices her leaving and gives chase, leading to a boss battle.
* MightyGlacier: The boss is incredibly sturdy and hits like a truck, but is not very nimble and most of its attacks can be avoided.
* OneHitKill: If it catches Sakuya inside the hut, the monster will grab her by the head and smash her repeatedly against the floor.
* RoarBeforeBeating: Let out a ferocious roar before attacking Sakuya in the glade.
* StealthBasedMission: Sakuya has no way to face it inside the small hut, so she has to wait and sneak past it instead.
* VaderBreath: The creature has a loud, distinctive breathing, which is heard as it moves across the hut.
