[[folder:The Player]]
!!The Player
The protagonist of most Monster Rancher games, with the exception of Phayne from ''4'' and Julio from ''EVO'', is you, the player. Your goal is ToBeAMaster, and with the help of your assistant and monsters you will accomplish this task.
* AudienceSurrogate: The protagonist in most games is intended to be you.
* HelloInsertNameHere: You get to name yourself, as well as renaming Phayne and Julio. You can also choose your gender in some games, though the [=PS1=] Battle Card game assumes you're male.
* PlayerPersonalityQuiz: 1, 2, and the Battle Card games have a quiz at the start. While it doesn't do anything in the main series, in the card games it determines your starting Monsters and deck.
* ReallyGetsAround: The reward for beating all the Zodiac Monsters in ''DS'' is for your rancher to [[https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/221370191865446410/368930655175835658/Screenshot_20171014-181116.png have]] [[https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/221370191865446410/368930838957785088/Screenshot_20171014-181304.png sex]] [[https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/221370191865446410/368930839456776192/Screenshot_20171014-181310.png with]] every woman in the cast except Cleo, complete with the going-to-sleep music.
* ToBeAMaster: This is your goal in most games.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Monster Rancher 1]]
!!Holly
The assistant in the first game, Holly is cheerful and outgoing. Holly also appears in ''2'', the Battle Card games, the Advance games, and ''DS''. She is also a major character in [[Anime/MonsterRancher the anime]].
* FriendlyRivalry: She and Colt develop one after encountering each other at the [=IMa=]-FIMBA Meet.

!!Master Tesca
Holly's mentor and a veteran monster breeder. He occasionally pops in to help out on the farm. Tesca also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II''.
* OldMaster: He's a retired monster breeder, and has a lot of knowledge.

!!Pierre
The errantry clerk. He's a bit of a worrywart.

!!Karnab
An explorer in ''1''. He appears in ''2'' as the headmaster of FIMBA during some tournaments. He has a much larger role in ''4''.
* AscendedExtra: He was a minor character in ''1'', but acts as FIMBA's representative in ''2'' and ''4''.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In ''4'', he's become so desperate for FIMBA to surpass IMA that he allows illegal activities.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Monster Rancher 2]]
!!Colt
Colt is your assistant in ''2'' alongside her pet toucan Joy, and dislikes her full name, Coltia. Her personality is slightly more tomboyish than Holly's, though for the most part they're identical. Colt also appears in the Battle Card games, the ''Advance'' games (where she's become a proper breeder) and ''DS'' (where she changed jobs and decided to become a mailwoman). She is also a character in [[Anime/MonsterRancher the anime]].

* ABirthdayNotABreak: At the start of ''Battle Card Episode II'', Colt is celebrating her 15th birthday. Then she gets whisked away to Monster Paradise, setting up the entire game's premise to reclaim all monster cards and rescue her.
* ConstantlyCurious: Her curiosity shows up during some events.
* DamselInDistress: The whole objective of ''Battle Card Episode II'' is to bring her back from the Monster Heaven, where she was transported to after completing an ancient tablet with all Battle Card monsters. Averted at the end, as she was never in any kind of dangers and was just chilling out up there waiting for you to get there. She also gets kidnapped in the final story bit of ''DS''.
* DeadpanSnarker: Try doing some stupid task, like going to the Ranch with no monster or entering a battle rank way above your monsters', and see how she makes a sarcastic remark.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: She doesn't take well to the 2nd Expedition guy, Kavaro. She replies to him indifferently when he arrives to ask for help in a expedition, and sighs in relief if you say no to his offer. It's never really explained why, but perhaps Kavaro's tendency to try to claim the rare items from the expedition for himself is to blame here. In contrast, she's really friendly with Talico and Rovest.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Colt is really friendly to pretty much every character in the game, except the shady adventurer Kavaro. And while she shows shock, surprise or slight rejection at first sight of certain breeds of monsters, she'll help raise them with a smile all the same.
* FriendlyRivalry: She and Holly develop one after encountering each other at the [=IMa=]-FIMBA Meet.
* HappyBirthdayToYou: Colt will sing a different version of the song for every year your monster lives. This is played up in ''DS'', where she's so into singing it to monsters she'll appear at the ranch just in time to sing it to your monster every single year as well.
* IconicSequelCharacter: Colt made her first appearance as the assitant of the second game in the series, and the closest to a BreakoutCharacter the series had showing up in Advance 1 and 2 as IMA representative, DS as mailman and alternative assistant choice, and Ultra Kaiju as IMA representative and Errantry breeder. To wit, Colt have almost as much appearance as Holly despite debuting a game later, and the only assistant in the series who have made an appearance after their debut and sequel game.
* LoyalAnimalCompanion: Colt gets an assistant for herself in the form of Joy, a toucan. Joy takes care of most tasks around the ranch, from handing down food and requests/rewards to the monster, warn Colt for certain events and even serve as an instructor during Drills.
* SignatureMon: As IMA representative, Colt usually shows up with her Mocchi, the mascot of Monster Rancher 2.
* SkepticismFailure: During the Metalner unlocking scenes, Colt is very dismissive of Master Pabs's claims about the strange marks on the crops being caused by alien monsters. That night, she's proven completely wrong when the spaceship does show up, much to Pabs's complete joy.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: She is delighted when a monster finds a Galoe nut; Galoe is her hometown.

!!Master Pabs
Colt's mentor, and a veteran monster breeder. He occasionally pops in to help out on the ranch. Pabs also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II''.

* AgentMulder: In the Metalner unlock scenes, he's a fierce believer of the ancient story detailing aliens visiting Earth and gifting humanity with a pillar of light, even though Colt dismiss it as a fairy tale. He gets so much joy the next night when proven completely right.
* BrilliantButLazy: His opinion on the current generation of Breeders, as well as the reason he established the Legend Cup. He thinks breeders start to slack off once they win the Major-4 and offers the Legend Cup (and getting added to the Hall of Fame) as an incentive to continue improving afterwards.
* TheComicallySerious: Most of the time he's serious and composed, but there are times where his more childish side shines through, like when proven right about Metalner's alien origin or when he gets the Joker Mask stuck to his face.
* FinalBoss: As the breeder of the White Mocchi Most, one of the two final opponents in the Legend Cup and last obstacle to fully complete the game.
* IdiotBall: When you find the Joker Mask, Pabs wears it without doing any research on it and gets the evil mask stuck to his face.
* TheMentor: Is one for Colt and, by association, the player. He always has some words of advice to give most of the times he appears.
* OldMaster: Just like Tesca, he's a long-retired monster breeder.
* RetiredBadass: Given he raised Most, one of the top strongest monsters in the entire game, this goes without saying.

!!Wyola
The market lady who gives out free monsters, as well as buying properly-trained ones for cash. She also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II'' and ''4'' under the retranslated name Viola. She's Dadge's younger sister.

* StarterMon: The Market she runs offers a few basic breeds that can be obtained right away and with no [=CDs=] involved.

!!Chaille
The shrine maiden who regenerates monsters for you to raise. She also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II'', where it's revealed she's April's daughter.

!!Dadge
The lab technician who freezes and revives monsters and helps you combine them into new ones. He's Wyola's older brother. Colt is intimidated by him. He also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II''.

* AwesomenessbyAnalysis: By using the Analyze option in the lab, Dadge can tell the Battle Skills your monster possess only by looking at them.
* MergingMachine: Dadge's lab offers the option to combine monsters in order to create a new, hopefully better, fresh new monster to raise.
* TheStoic: He's terse and very blunt in his lines and attitude. This is probably the reason Colt feels intimidated.

!!Errow
The errantry clerk. Initially a complete jerk who's dismissive of you, he becomes impressed, and then a sycophant, as you rise in rank. He also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II''.

* BreakTheHaughty: Errow starts out smug and dismissive... until you start climbing ranks. By the end, he's become a complete sycophant.
* PriceOnTheirHead: Errow offers a reward if the player's monster defeats one of many wild monsters rooming the Errantry areas and attacking other trainers. The prize money gets better the harder/higher ranked the monster defeated.

!!Auntie Verde
The item store lady and an acquaintance of Colt. She also appears in ''Battle Card Episode II'' and in the spin-off ''Monster Rancher Explorer'', when she was in her twenties.

%%* CoolOldLady
* DiscountCard: Randomly during the weeks the player can receive a letter from the item shop advertising a discount sale.
* IdenticalStranger: Young Verde looks strikingly similar to ''Battle Card Episode II'''s Cue. It's possible they are related in some way.
* ObaSan: Colt calls her this almost exclusively. It is uncertain if she's her actual aunt or not, thought.
* PermanentlyMissableContent: There are two elements tied to Verde's shop that become lost forever: you need to reach Breeder Rank 4 before the store is fully upgraded or Verde will never give you the seeds needed to unlock the Mock monster, and once a certain item is added to the store the Int Errantry high-level enemy King Ape will never appear again, locking the player out of obtaining its Monster Card.

!!Dr. Talico
The first Expedition character. An archaeologist from the Torble University out searching the shrine where legends say God hid all the monster disc stones. As he needs assistance from a monster to sort the obstacles to get there, he requests help to Colt and the player's monster. Colt takes a liking to him and is always eager to go on an expedition with him, and he's also an old friend of Master Pabs.

* AdventurerArchaeologist: He goes out adventuring in active-volcano areas to find ancient temples and objects. He does not, however, have the Indy skills to do so alone and needs the player's assistance.
* AdventurerOutfit: He wears a beige Safari adventurer suit with a backpack and hat.
* {{Antepiece}}: The first expedition you go with him has very low required stats (Rank D at least), and the expedition itself is the most basic one, with a straight map with a single road to the only searchable area and only 2 obstacles to destroy. All expedition maps afterwards are larger, more complex and filled with obstacles and buildings/areas to explore.
* JustifiedTutorial: His first expedition serves as a tutorial for the latter ones, with an easy trek around a volcano where no one can get lost and losing is hard without actually trying.
* LeftHanging: Talico's quest for the shrine of God, the whole reason he's going in expeditions, is never brought up again after his first visit.
* MyCard: He presents one to Coltia when first visiting.
* NerdGlasses: Wears a pair of round glasses befitting of an university professor.
* TheProfessor: Works as one in the university.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Talico's probably the most sensible character in the game, admonishing others for doing careless things and bringing in knowledge and research when called, and obviously he wears a lil' pair of glasses to show it.

!!Kavaro
The second Expedition character. A self-proclaimed treasure hunter that travels all around in search of historic treasures. He wants to go to Parapare Jungle to dig up some ruins, but needs assistance from a well-known trainer like the player. Colt really doesn't like the man, and is visible annoyed at him and relieved every time the player turns his offer down.

* AdventurerOutfit: He dresses like Indiana Jones basically, hat included.
* DislikesTheNewGuy: Colt never warms up to him, and is always annoyed when he appears and visibly relieved when the player turns him down.
* ImmortalitySeeker: He's really eager to take a bite out of the life-extending Gold Peach when first found, but Colt forces him to relent as the item belongs to the monster who found it. Oddly enough he doesn't try again next time you find one.
* JungleJapes: His expeditions take the player to the exotic Parepare Jungle.

!!Rovest
The third Expedition character. A biologist from Torble University and Talico's son, Rovest is out there investigating rumors of a mysterious monster in the Torble Mountains, and comes seeking your help to go explore the area. He's straightforward and to the point, and Colts also seems to take a liking to him.

* BigfootSasquatchAndYeti: His quest for the mysterious monster seems based on the usual Sasquatch legends, and well he does gets the Jill breed unlocked so...
* FantasticDrug: Rovest's Expedition is the only way to get Paradoxine, the best drug in the game for stat gains.
* SlippySlideyIceWorld: His Expedition takes the player to the icy mountain areas of Torble.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Monster Rancher Battle Card games]]

* ChildhoodFriends: with Colt.

Two young Battle Card players who love the game. They are members of the Junior Fire Dragons, a group for those too young to join the regular Fire Dragons.

!!Miller and Ellie
Two rivals to the player who use your own deck against you.
* PrecociousCrush: Ellie has a really obvious crush on the player.

!!BCB Band
A group of Battle Card players who also form a rock band.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Juras, the BCB drummer, uses a team of Zilla, Golem, and Monol. He teaches players that dodging is a necessity, as his cards have high GUT requirements but very heavy attacks. His team is also made up of Stone Walls, so Cherry Tapping is less effective than it would be.

!!The Blue Wolves
A cutthroat band of Battle Card players willing to go to any lengths to win.
* ExactWords: Isabella uses this when you first duel her. After playing a game with her Monster Card Mew, she says that she didn't say she'd be betting the card on the duel. She tries to pull this again in your second duel with her, but the other members tell her to give it up.

!!The Fire Dragons
A well-respected group of Battle Card players and the Blue Wolves' main rivals.

* CrypticBackgroundReference: She was first mentioned in ''1'' before appearing in ''3'', a prequel.

!!Gadamon
Your main rival. Gadamon is feisty, but never seems to win when it counts.

!!Grandpa Bragma
The Tochikan Shrine Master. He was the first to win four out of the Great 5 tournaments, but retired early to run the Shrine after the previous Shrine Master died.
* HonoraryUncle: The Tochikans call him 'Grandpa' even if they're unrelated.

!!Grandma Mosha
A skilled monster breeder in her own right, and a contemporary of Bragma. She wears a cat on her head. Mosha was the first to battle Ragnarox/Ragnaroks in battle, but could not defeat it.
* HonoraryUncle: Like Bragma, the Tochikans call her 'Grandma' even if they're unrelated.

!!Master Lus

* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Phayne had no family to return to after being expelled, letting him get strong-armed into running a ranch.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His expulsion from Elives Academy is a major plot point.

!!Yuri
Your first assistant in ''4'', though only for the first rank. Afterward Yuri runs the item shop.
* BlushSticker: Yuri blushes in a way that is almost entirely circular and smooth, similar to this trope.
* CrushBlush: Talk to her enough times and late in the game Yuri will be brightly blushing when you visit her shop.
* GenkiGirl: She's quite hyperactive and eager.
* MrExposition: As the first ranch helper, she spends a lot of her screen time tutoring you.
