* HypocriticalFandom: The early discussions of the show had a small minority that shipped Yuri and Yu-chan together, despite her being married. As a result, a small ship war ensued with those who shipped Yuuri with her and those ho shipped him with any of the other men in show. The yaoi camp insisted that he was over his crush, she's married, and that it wasn't a romance show... even though at the time it was just as unlikely that Yuuri would end up with anyone, and that fandom is largely known to keep on shipping m/m when the canon stated otherwise.

* AwesomeArt: The art and animation are of very high quality, especially during the figure skating scenes. It helps that the figure skating routines in this anime were choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto, a former ice dancer who is now a choreographer and coach.

* BrokenBase: In regards to the fanservice. Half the viewers are more than okay with it and treat it as an extra treat that doesn't distract from the story. The other half are frustrated with it (no, not that way) and state that it detracts from the overall plot of the show. Basically it comes down to two fronts-- those who originally came for the CastFullOfPrettyBoys, and those who originally came to watch an ice skating sports anime.

** Episode 2 continues the trend, with Viktor decides to ask Yuuri about himself... while touching his chin, brushing his hand against his own, and leaning in close to him while sensual mood music plays in the background. Yuri also find himself blushing later on, but chalks it up to not being used to his idol living and training with him.

** The second PV for the anime had a Stinger where Yuri talks to Viktor. When the audience gets to see them talk, we see that Viktor's face is deathly close to Katsuki's, and his thumb is dragging down on a blushing Katsuki's bottom lip.

*** The scene itself comes from Episode 3, and what he ends up telling Yuuri is "I'll satisfy you for sure".

** WHERE'S THE YURI / More like "Yaoi on Ice"When the anime was first announced, a lot of Western anime fans expected it to be a YuriGenre work solely based on the title. Cue their surprise when the show was revealed to be about male figure skating and had quite a bit of HoYay. Most of the confusion stemmed from the fact that the "Yuri" in Yuri Genre and the name "Yuri" are both pronounced and written differently (The boy Yuri Katsuki's name is pronounced "Yuuri", for example)
** Why is Shinichi doing ice skating? Katsuki and Shinichi's visual similarities were immediately pointed out by the fanbase. Even better is that he shares Shinichi's character designer for Parasyte's anime.
*** To a lesser extent: "What are Gintoki and Shinpachi doing there?"When the second PV came out, a lot of confused Western fans only knew about the final scene, and surmised that it was a Gintama parody of yaoi that the anime was releasing.
** It's a Russian taunt.This is a reference to a Metal Gear Solid meme.

* TheWoobie: It's really hard not to feel bad for Yuri Katsuki in the beginning of the show. He already tells the audience that he's made it dead last in all of the major competitions that he's been in for the season, and he's clearly not happy about it. By the time we first meet Yuri, he's lost a bit of his passion in ice skating.

The festival picture is a selfie. There's a fan edit where he's holding Yuri's hand instead, but it's that, fanart.

** The ending animation has a lot of very intimate moments between Yuuri and Viktor, including Viktor bringing Yuuri through a festival - something very couple-like -- showering together near the beach and ultimately, Viktor brushing Yuuri's hair in a very intimate setting --Yuuri's bedroom at night, with only a candle as light.

** It's a Russian taunt.Started on ImageBoards after the second PV came out. Everyone was wondering about the context for the extremely homoerotic stinger, and some tried to come up with different ideas for why Viktor would be that close to Yuri's face without going the obvious route. Some proposed he was near-sighted and ill, some had other, plausible excuses, and one anon proposed the meme you see here.
