** Should VideoGame/WarioWorld and VideoGame/WarioMasterOfDisguise be considered as part of the Wario Land franchise or just individual games? Many fans tend to put the two under the Wario Land series given they're both platformers that share many elements with the rest of the Wario Land series and Nintendo has officially placed them under the Wario Land series. However many fans just prefer to see them as individual games instead due to neither sharing the Wario Land name and their very different approaches in gameplay and mechanics from the Wario Land series such as the more combat oriented gameplay in Wario World and the bigger focus on touch controls and minigames in Master of Disguise.

* CommonKnowledge: Many discussions of the Wario Land series, especially in regards to VideoGame/PizzaTower being a NotSoCheapImitation of it, talk about the entire series as high-octane action games with an emphasis on keeping up your momentum, a description that doesn't even apply to half of the main Wario Land games. In fact, 4 is the closest to fitting the description of what makes a Wario Land game, and it doesn't even have every element, such as Wario's immortality.

A bit vague; doesn't seem to have anything to do with the trope.

* CrossesTheLineTwice: Most of the music that accompanies the transformations in Wario Land II and 3. Somehow they manage to sound depressing and hilarious at the same time.

This page only accepts tropes that apply to the franchise as a whole. Moving game-specific examples to the appropriate pages. Deleting misuse (If all bosses are difficult, none of them are That One Boss).

* BreatherBoss: The Minotaur from the first game; you just attack him and then throw him off the platform into the instant death lava.

** Whether the Metroidvania approach of 3 or the more linear approach of the other games in the series is better. Some think the progression and execution of 3 is not as good as the other games in the series, while others think 3 is an overall improvement over II and the best game in the series.

* ContestedSequel:
** Though still considered a good game, VideoGame/WarioLand4 is more divisive than the titles before it. This is mainly because it makes Wario able to be killed again, there are fewer transformations he can go into (with the available transformations having lost their iconic pieces of music from II and 3), it makes every level a time-trial mission to escape before it explodes, it becomes mandatory to find every single treasure to beat the game, the level designs go back to the more linear ones of the first two games, and it has a much shorter length than the previous titles.
** Every game since Wario Land 4 is even more contested. Which one is the 'true' sequel to the previous games? Well, you’ll get a lot of different answers to that question, as each has different gameplay mechanics and game design. Do you prefer the 3D beat-em-up/platformer hybrid approach of VideoGame/WarioWorld, the stylus-oriented gameplay of VideoGame/WarioMasterOfDisguise, or the more return-to-form 2D platforming of VideoGame/WarioLandShakeIt? As for whether any of them are even good games... that’s pretty debated as well. Wario Land: Shake It! gets flak for being too much like Wario Land 4 except with less new ideas in it, Wario World has a very mixed critical reception in general, and Wario: Master of Disguise is seen by quite a few fans and critics as Sequelitis just plain bad. You can see this by the Metacritic scores of each game:
*** Wario Land 4: 88
*** Wario World: 71
*** Wario: Master of Disguise: 60
*** Wario Land: Shake It!: 78

* GameBreaker:
** In the original Wario Land, the Jet Pot allowed Wario to fly a certain distance by pressing B in mid-air. Wario keeps flying for a fixed distance (at which point it will fly downwards like landing) or until the player presses B again. But, double-tapping the B button caused Wario to reset his flight distance in midair, allowing him to fly as far as pleased.
** The 10 Gold Coin drawn by pressing Up+B. Besides throwing it around, any enemy touching it while you held it would be knocked out. This is the same that would happen if you were holding another enemy, only that the coin would not be knocked out of your hands afterwards, so you had an impenetrable shield over your head.
%%* GoddamnedBats
* FirstInstallmentWins: From a commercial standpoint. Though its sequels -- particularly the first two -- were and are generally more popular with players, the first game outperformed its successors hugely in the number of copies sold. To give an idea of the gulf, the first Wario Land sold over 5 million copies worldwide while the next highest-selling Wario game, VideoGame/WarioWareTouched, sold 2.47 million units.
* GoodBadBugs: With some tricky D-pad input, some levels from Wario Land 1 can be skipped on the overworld map, as many s can demonstrate.

* ThatOneBoss: From Shake It!:
** Hot Roderick is a good example of why one should not play tennis while in a HighSpeedBattle.
** Chortlebot is a MonsterClown who happens to be airborne while you are not, resulting in a harrowing pseudo-ColossusClimb with him raining down attacks all the while. Of particular note are his fire-based attacks, which cover most of the stage and force you to drop whatever you're doing to dodge them (good luck doing so if you were halfway through an attack on him).
** Bloomsday/Scumflower is a floral sumo wrestler with an annoying ability to stir hurricanes and create strong gusts of wind. He also does this while spamming Bumbleprods and trapping you between damage-dealing obstacles, so you have to be ready to turn on a time to avoid being sucked/blown into them. Oh, and the only way to hurt him is by flinging stunned enemies at his face, so you can't be hit even once unless you want to repeat the phase. Have fun.
** Large Fry is the ultimate FlunkyBoss, creating so many enemies that you're often too busy fighting them to see his MacrossMissileMassacre incoming. If you try to focus on avoiding the missiles, you're liable to stumble into one of the many harmful minions he deploys on the stage.
%%** Wolfenboss and Shoot (the Soccer Bunny) in 3.
* ThatOneLevel:
%%** Doodle Woods in Wario Land 4.
** The Big Board in Wario Land 4. Part of its gimmick is that you can only advance through hitting specific signs on switches, which requires you to essentially roll the dice and get a certain number. While they're mostly annoying on their own due to their time-wasting effects, the real stinker is the one on the escape path, which has the health damage effect as its second to last square; since it will simply alternate between the (required) escape square and the health damage square if you don't get the right number, it's entirely possible to zap Wario to death should you not get precisely the right roll while under pressure from the time limit.

Despite this, you'll rarely find anyone talking about the games and they lack the large fan followings that other less popular Nintendo franchises enjoy.
