* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Paul doesn't tell Christina he's the recipient of her husband's heart transplant until after he's set the groundwork to date her. We're supposed to believe he's feeling compassion for the woman who lost so much, but it looks like he's unhappy with his life and wants to co-opt Christina's under the excuse of following his (new) heart.

Naomi Watts had already earned immense acclaim for her work in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, winning the Best Actress prize from the National Society of Film Critics and coming in as the runner-up at New York and Los Angeles. 21 Grams was more of her following up on the momentum that that film gave her. And Benicio, as the example already mentioned, had won an Oscar for Traffic, and was generally acclaimed as an actor before that. He had additionally won an Independent Spirit Award for The Usual Suspects.

* HeReallyCanAct: Naomi Watts is the most surprising of the trio (Having mostly done small projects beforehand) but Benicio Del Toro arguably gives the best performance (He had already won an Oscar so whether it counts is up for debate).
