** Played very straight with Shredder and Krang, who went from goofy but somewhat menacing in the '87 show to entirely useless here. Justified in that they're nothing compared to the Utrom Shredder. Although given that they had access to the Super Technodrome after the end and were still planning to use a giggle ray to attack kinda implied that they're still decayed.

* BrokenBase: The movie's treatment of the 1987-verse is heavily divisive among the fandom. While some saw their exaggerated characterizations as tounge-in-cheek that helped extenuate how out of their element they were when thrown into unfamiliar worlds, as well as the message that every group of turtles is valid regardless of their personality; others, (particularly fans of the 1987 series) hated how it made the '87 turtles look like fools, feeling like it only served to make the '03 turtles look good and to insult to the old series.

Misuse of Sacred Cow, it's supposed to be about a work that so well regarded that it can't be criticized

** Creator/DougWalker liked the movie enough that he threw out the Critic Critic persona and praised it out-of-character. (This was before Walker gave his thoughts on movies out-of-character on a regular basis).
** On the opposite end of the spectrum, Walker's former colleague WebVideo/Phelous was one of the few internet critics to give it an overwhelmingly negative review, both because he had genuinely been looking forward to seeing the 1987 characters return (as opposed to a parody of them) and because all of the jokes about the old show could be summed up as "We hate the 1987 cartoon! It sucked! Look at how fucking stupid their Turtles were!" When the review eventually hit [=YouTube=], he added a disclaimer stating that it was made before he watched the 2003 series, which he's gone on to enjoy, but that many of the points regarding the 1987 series' treatment still stand.
** Doug Walker's brother, Rob, had a somewhat negative opinion of Turtles Forever when it came up in a later video about the Ninja Turtle movies, being of the opinion that the creators made the '87 Turtles look stupid purely because they were insecure about their own show. It wasn't entirely negative, as he did enjoy some aspects of the film, but being a fan of the 80s Turtles he wasn't pleased that they were treated so childishly.
** Captain Logan from Geekvolution, by contrast, agrees with Phelous for some of his criticisms, like the fact that the 80's Turtles and other characters were treated like a parody of themselves and were out of character, but otherwise enjoyed the film for the majority of the things it does right, like the comedy and commentary on the TMNT brand.
** The Rowdy Reviewer has by far the most positive take on the movie arguing that it actually treats the 1987 characters with far more dignity than most realize and that most of the insults towards them are from either jerkasses or villains and shouldn't be taken at face value.
