* RootingForTheEmpire: Once [[spoiler:Dave]] fully embraces his role as the BigBad, he becomes a much more interesting character while still retaining his sympathetic qualities, with many actually rooting for him to win. It also helps that the first two people opposing [[spoiler:Dave]] are Amy, a BigSisterBully who wished her sister had died in the womb, and Sugar, a grossly FatBitch who [[KarmaHoudini basically got away with her actions]] in Pakitehew Island, both of whom were eliminated by [[spoiler:Dave]].

* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: [[spoiler:Dave wasn't really popular in the show due to his whiny personality and his creepy obsession with Sky, which led to his FaceHeelTurn upon learning that she has a boyfriend. However, fans will come to enjoy this villainous version of Dave when he orchestrates the eliminations of two [[HateSink deeply disliked contestants]], Amy and Sugar, and continues to commit many more villainous deeds while still remaining a sympathetic character. It also helps that Sky is not competing with Dave this time, allowing Dave to develop more as his own character instead of remaining a SatelliteLoveInterest]].

** The Author's Notes at the First Aftermath chapter states who they think are the [[CuttingOffTheBranches canon winners of the series]]. [[spoiler:The second part of the ''Island (2023)'' confirms that Owen is the official winner of the first season.]]
** For many of the chapters, Chef acts as the co-host of the season and describes what the challenges will be about. Come the Reboot season in 2023, and that is exactly the role that Chef fills throughout the season.

** Cody occasionally referencing memes throughout his run also crosses over into this.
* JerkassWoobie: Dave. While his actions aren't very moral or justified, the harassment he's been through between seasons [[spoiler: and being manipulated (albeit briefly) again this season]] shows how much the guy has been swung around the place since his original debut. It also becomes quite clear that he's having self-esteem issues because of everything the show is throwing at him.
