* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Several fans of the Core Design games were ''not'' happy with Crystal Dynamics' ContinuityReboot with [[TombRaiderLegend Legend]] and the subsequent drastic changes to Lara's personality and backstory. In addition, some feel this way about the ''second'' ContinuityReboot.

* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: The debate over Lara's effect on female video game characters will probably never be settled. Some say she was a pioneer in an era when female main characters (especially in action games) were exceedingly rare. Others say she did more harm than good through her over-sexualization.

* DesignatedHero: A criticism of the later games on the [=PS1=] is that Lara turns into this, with the enemies in the games including not just the usual criminals and animals that stand in her way, but also police officers and security guards.

This eventually led to RonTheDeathEater, described below.

* RonTheDeathEater: Lara herself gets this a lot. Fanworks tend to be a lot more liberal with the AlternateCharacterInterpretation mentioned above, many of them choosing the "borderline sociopath" option or [[AdaptationalVillainy even worse interpretations.]] (Evil versions of Lara tend to be far more common than good ones in this area.)

** This is also very visible in [=TopCow=] comics, where Lara is AntiHero at best and easily qualifies for VillainProtagonist in few issues.

* NarmCharm: Again, some of the dialogue. Especially ''[[VideoGame/TombRaiderLegend Legend]]'' contain several instances of narm charm by dint of dealing with the story of how Lara deals with the death of her mother. [[PunctuatedForEmphasis '''"WHERE" bang "IS" bang "MY" bang "MOTHER ?!?!" bang''']]

Added DiffLines:

** But it's very easy to point the Dork Age for the marketing of the games. Everything done before [[VideoGame/TombRaiderTheLastRevelation The Last Revelation]] was just low-brow campaign based entirely on sex-appeal and extremely distasteful adds. Just check for yourself how the game [[http://i.imgur.com/KEa7OAk.jpg was advertised]] [[http://i.imgur.com/UsxHnez.jpg back in]] [[http://i.imgur.com/LEzrYYV.jpg the day]].

** After all the complications and final release of VideoGame/RiseOfTheTombRaider, Core fans united with fandom of Crystal Dynamics' original trilogy [[EnemyMine in their mutual hate toward the second reboot]]. Both fandoms consider current continuity as an extreme case of CharacterDerailment, reboot notwithstanding.

* FallenCreator: Gloriously subverted. Initially, Toby Gard was villified for dropping the franchise early on, but it was rather subtle. He was however openly called "sell-out" when Crystal Dynamics hired him as a consultant and - according to some fans - helped them "ruin it forever". Then he was given full creative power over the script and level design, and [[VideoGame/TombRaiderUnderworld Underworld]] happend, winning back the crowd. It is the closest modern game to Core's style and is widely considered the best entry to the series in entire Crystal Dynamics' run, at least as far as older section of the fandom is concerned.

* FanDumb: Two really funny and ironic cases, all things considered:
** When initial marketing for VideoGame/TombRaiderLegend started and new design of AmbiguouslyBrown Lara was shown, part of the fandom went amok. Thing is - it was a MythologyGag referencing times when [[VideoGame/TombRaider the first game]] was still on concept stage and Lara was going to be SpicyLatina named Laura Cruz. Toby Gard, the "father" of the franchise and main designer behind Legend, found it really ironic and kept making references to this event for his entire tenure in Crystal Dynamics.
** [[VideoGame/TombRaider2013 Second reboot]] had a subtext of Lara being lesbian and in relationship with Sam. Cue InternetBackdraft. Meanwhile, back in the Core era, [=TopCow=] was publishing Tomb Raider comics, first starting them as a crossover with their flagship, Comicbook/{{Witchblade}}. Later Lara would occasionally show up to hang out with Sara Pezzini or Sara was paying a visit in Tomb Raider comics. During those appearances, they did everything short of make out with one another, while the biggest question between fans of both games and comics was: WillTheyOrWontThey And it was hardly a subtext back then.
