* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: The film's total absence of likable characters despite being a crazy comedy is often seen as the source for its controversy, and according to one Oscar voter who hated the fact that "there was no one to root for" the real reason why it was an Awards no-show.

* AwardSnub: Oh boy...Five Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay) and not a single win, continuing Scorsese's rather unfortunate habit of having his best films released in years with incredibly competitive Academy Award seasons (''Film/TheDeparted'' aside).

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Did Jordan Belfort reform and repent of his actions at the end or is he still the same douchebag but merely become functional and kept himself in check? Bear in mind Leo Di Caprio's character, not the real figure. Rule of Cautious Editing applies there.

* HeReallyCanAct: He had a solid reputation but Jonah Hill's performance here was seen by many as way beyond what people expected of him, with some comparing him to Joe Pesci, being a similar role of a sociopathic sidekick.
** He's built a solid reputation since Titanic, but for many people [=DiCaprio=]'s performance here was the first one that made skeptics (who doubted his position as the successor of [=DeNiro=] in Scorsese's films) impressed, a role which transforms the romantic dreamboat into an unrepentant LargeHam vulgar sleazebag who people say is even worse than the crooks in Scorsese's gangster films.

* GoodIsNotDumb: At no point is Patrick Denham or any law enforcement official (aside from two cops in one scene) shown to be incompetent, corrupt or inefficient. Once Patrick starts investigating Jordan and his activities, it's made very clear that Jordan is in real danger and could lose anything if he makes the wrong move. It's even pointed out to Jordan that Patrick is far more intelligent than him, despite being a man who made millions of dollars.

* MaritalRapeLicense: The final sex scene between Jordan and Naomi comes ''very close.'' It's pretty clear that Jordan isn't seeking her consent, and several times Naomi tells him "No" and "Get off of me." She finally decides to let him have her one last time (even encourages him to do so) while obviously not enjoying it herself.

* GoodIsDumb: Despite all his efforts to bring Jordan down, Patrick Denham is still in the exact position Jordan claimed he was in during their first meeting- on a train, heading home with a lot of other "average" people. Compare this to Jordan who steals millions, rats out his friends, yet only gets three years and manages to become a motivational speaker in the end. On the other hand...
