* MemeticMutation: The line "[[CountryMatters cuntstruck]]" has picked up attention from quite a lot of people.

* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Abigail crosses it when she burns Sarah's letter to Queen Anne]], although one could argue that [[spoiler:she crossed it by poisoning Sarah's tea, though she implies when Sarah doesn't come back that she only intended for Sarah to pass out in the woods for a little bit instead of being dragged halfway across the county all night]].

* {{Squick}}: Anne pigging out on fancy food, when she suddenly vomits repeatedly into a nearby vase. She then brushes off her servant's attempts to clean her face and immediately starts eating again — ''while her face and mouth are still covered in vomit.''

** Possibly justified by the content of the film: Despite being impeccably made and brilliantly written and acted (all the stuff critics would care about) the film is often unpleasant, with all of its characters being horrible people [[DarknessInducedAudienceApathy (stuff that would turn off casual moviegoing audiences)]].

*** Sexual preference aside, this is clearly a CrapsackWorld which is more than eager to take advantage of Abigail, an attractive girl with no economic or political power. She simply cannot afford to enjoy sex. Sarah, on the other hand, is able to have a passionate affair with Anne in private while also having a loving bond with her husband.

** Possibly justified by the content of the film: Despite being impeccably made and brilliantly written and acted (all the stuff critics would care about) the film is often unpleasant, with all of its characters being horrible people (stuff that would turn off casual moviegoing audiences).

** Sarah is very far from a good person, as it's made clear she's been taking advantage of Anne for years. With that being said, the unenviable turn of events that befall her can make you feel for the power hungry, manipulative woman, as Abigail does everything she can to usurp her position, with Sarah having to witness her success firsthand, [[spoiler: ending the story scarred and devoid of all her previous authority and stature]]. [[ALightedShadeOfBlack The fact that she ''may'' actually care for Anne deep down]] and has to see a woman who has no such feelings for her queen dominate her is also rather sad.

* JerkassWoobie: Abigail does some despicable things over the course of the film, but she's motivated by a horrific fear of being forced back into penury and prostitution, a life she only just escaped. When you think of how she was raped on a semi-regular basis, it is not hard to understand why she went to such unconscionable lengths to avoid that ever happening again, not to mention she's sexually harassed on the carriage ride to the palace, thrown into shit ''twice'', pranked into touching lye with her bare hand by another servant, and gets beaten with a lash for trying to heal the Queen's sores (granted, she shouldn't have snuck into her quarters, but she did have good intentions).

* NauseaFuel: In keeping with the film's CentralTheme. Between multiple closeups of vicious wounds, frequent FanDisservice, and an sickly washed-out cinematography palette, this movie is packed with gruesome and unappetizing scenes. That's all ''without'' factoring in the VomitIndiscretionShot each main character gets, all of which are extended closeups. Queen Anne's reign was during a highly unsanitary time period, and Yorgos Lanthimos is very happy to remind us of that fact.

* NauseaFuel: Oh, ''yes''. From detailed shots of Anne's gout to the FanDisservice at the brothel to the nude courtier being pelted with tomatoes, this movie is packed with gruesome and unappetizing scenes, and that's all ''without'' factoring in the VomitIndiscretionShot each main character gets, all of which are extended closeups. Queen Anne's reign was during a highly unsanitary time period, and Yorgos Lanthimos is very happy to remind us of that fact.

* MagnificentBitch: The film is about Abigail and Sarah essentially trying to outfox one-another with magnificent bitchiness. Although Abigail ultimately triumphs, both elevate it to the level of a fine art.

* {{Tearjerker}}: Creator/OliviaColman can ''really'' tug your heartstrings.
** Anne tells Abigail that she lost ''seventeen'' children with visible tears in her eyes and a shaky smile as she says each bunny is named after her dead child.
** Anne watches Sarah and Lord Masham dance at a party, the Queen's lighthearted expression fading slowly into one of envy, heartbreak and loneliness. She briefly attempts to fake a smile, fails, and demands that the music stop.
** Anne has a breakdown as she staggers through the hallways of her palace, disoriented and sobbing hysterically. She snatches a baby from the arms of a servant and holds it to her breast, doting on it as though it's her own before it's snatched back. It really shows how much Anne has lost.
** The musicians who are playing in the courtyard when Anne suddenly screams at them and demands they stop playing and leave. They look so panicked and confused...

* MisaimedFandom: Especially on {{Website/Tumblr}} the film is touted as a wonderfully romantic lesbian film...when in fact all the leads are all [[ManipulativeBastard Manipulative Bitches]] towards one another and even often even indulge in [[DomesticAbuse Domestic Abuse]]. Sarah in particular is treated as simply engaging in [[ToughLove Tough Love]] with Queen Anne but in film is shown [[ManipulativeBastard exploiting]] Anne emotionally, [[TheBully bullying]] her psychologically, and [[DomesticAbuse even choking her at one point]] not to mention threatening to expose their [[BlackMail sexual relationship]] when Queen Anne starts to assert herself. [[spoiler:Abigail in the end is implied not even to truly love Anne and is clearly only using her to further her ambition.]]
